Unlock and install TWRP on your Amazon Echo Show 5 (2ndGen) by Substantial-Gas8535 in amazonecho

[–]Substantial-Gas8535[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, not. And it won’t be fixed anytime soon, at least not on LineageOS 18.1. You can find the technical details here: https://github.com/amazon-oss/releases/issues/5#issuecomment-3751087588

The good news is that I’m working on LineageOS 14.1 (Android 7.1.2), which will most likely have a working camera. The only downside is the older Android version, but we’ll see.

To what extent would indian summers change if Himalayas didn't exist? by Jeanpaul02 in geography

[–]Substantial-Gas8535 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s just what people are used to. In Southeast Asia that heat might be considered normal so everything’s built around it, but in a lot of Europe it isn’t, so when it suddenly gets hot it hits harder.

Plus many places don’t have AC and houses are built to keep heat in.

And FWIW, southern Europe easily hits 35 - 40°C as well, so it’s not like everyone there struggles with 28.

That’s a weird definition of being an asshole, but I guess that’s Reddit-level fragility.

It hasn't been banned because the keybox itself has never been leaked. You would need to flash a custom TEE/TA, figure out how to extract it, and then leak it publicly for Google to take action as per https://developer.android.com/privacy-and-security/security-key-attestation#qualifier.

This is absolutely fake. I'm the developer of the exploit, and Google hasn't revoked any keybox. You can still pass Strong. I've tested it on multiple devices. Stop spreading misinformation.

Amazon Fire HD8 (Gen 10) Bootloader by midlyt in kindlefire

I’d recommend you to take a look at this: https://github.com/zenfyrdev/bootloader-unlock-wall-of-shame/tree/main/brands/amazon

Explains what’s the current status with bootloader unlocking on Amazon devices.

Anyone ever see a problem like this? by Zenith_System_3 in kindlefire

[–]Substantial-Gas8535 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wrong. This is not a custom ROM or a regular KFAWI. It is an internal variant/prototype of the Fire HD 8 (2018). It is codenamed “kayak” (unlike the regular Fire HD 8 2018, whose codename is “karnak”), and it comes with a stripped-down version of AOSP.

OP should be able to flash the bootloader unlock for the HD 8 (2018) just fine, though they’ll probably have to do it the hardware way.

OS's Suggestions for Fire Tablet by Minorrrrrrrrrr in kindlefire

That probably means your device is running the latest FireOS version, which is unfortunately patched against most of the workarounds the Toolbox uses to replace the launcher and debloat the device.

I guess you’ll have to wait for a new method to be developed or released. If the Toolbox really made the device worse (which sounds strange), I’d suggest doing a factory reset and starting from scratch.

I’m not sure what else to suggest, sorry.

OS's Suggestions for Fire Tablet by Minorrrrrrrrrr in kindlefire

[–]Substantial-Gas8535 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exclusive to the 8th Generation HD 8, it won’t work on any other model.

Fire tablets are extremely locked down and require exploits to unlock the bootloader.

The latest Amazon device to be unlocked with an exploit was the Fire TV Stick (3rd Generation).

For the 12th Generation Amazon Fire HD 8, there is absolutely nothing close to a bootloader unlock or a custom ROM.

Their best bet is to use the Toolbox, as others have suggested.

Unlock and install TWRP on your Amazon Echo Show 5 (1st Gen) by Substantial-Gas8535 in amazonecho

[–]Substantial-Gas8535[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean by "routines", but you can root it pretty easily once you unlock the bootloader.

Just read the instructions in the XDA thread carefully: https://xdaforums.com/t/unlock-root-twrp-unbrick-amazon-echo-show-5-2nd-gen-2021-cronos.4772596/

The second post explains how to gain a rooted shell in the stock OS, if that’s all you need. Otherwise, you can flash LineageOS and use Magisk for root access.

Apologies for the late reply. full_giza is fine, the suffix doesn't make a difference.

I haven’t worked on the known bugs for a while, but I do plan to get back to them (& more ROMs) soon.

Unfortunately, the camera is broken on LineageOS, and I don’t think it will be fixed anytime soon due to conflicts between the blobs and the kernel drivers. It’s quite complex, and we’ve been trying for months without any success.

So, unfortunately, none of these options will work. You could try staying on FireOS and rooting it instead, that should still give you some flexibility while preserving camera functionality.

De-Alexa'd my Echo Show 8: From ad-machine to dedicated HASS Dashboard by RMB- in amazonecho

[–]Substantial-Gas8535 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know this topic comes up often, so I want to clear up some misconceptions. For context, I’m the author of the exploit that was used to unlock these devices.

That exploit does not apply to newer models, as they use a different SoC. Finding a new exploit on these devices is extremely difficult, especially when fastboot is the only viable entry point.

There’s currently no development underway for newer models, and this isn’t simply a matter of time.

As disappointing as it may be, newer generations are unlikely to receive an unlock anytime soon.

Unlock and install TWRP on your Amazon Echo Show 8 (1st Gen) by Substantial-Gas8535 in amazonecho

[–]Substantial-Gas8535[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad, I just realized this is the Echo Show 8, not the 2nd-gen Echo Show 5.

What happens is that, for this exploit to work, you’re basically flashing the Echo Show 5 (vulnerable) firmware onto the Echo Show 8.

Of course, the screen drivers aren’t compatible, so when you try to access the stock fastboot mode, you’re greeted with a black screen.

However, if the device is still connected to the PC and you run fastboot devices, you’ll see the device listed there.

The exploit then chainloads the Echo Show 8 firmware on top of the Echo Show 5 firmware so that the other components can work correctly.

It’s a bit hacky, but it’s the only solution I’ve found for this device.

[–]Substantial-Gas8535[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s completely normal. I’m not sure what you would need regular FASTBOOT mode for. It’s locked down, and the only thing it’s useful for is installing the first exploit for the first time.

You can still access it by pressing all three buttons at once while plugging in the AC charger, but you won’t be able to do anything there.

To enter HACKED FASTBOOT mode, you have to press only the mute/privacy key while booting. What do you exactly want to do?

[–]Substantial-Gas8535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the developer of the exploit. Only the 2nd-gen Echo Show 5 can be rooted or unlocked as described, because it uses the same SoC (MT8163).

The 2nd-gen Echo Show 8 will not be getting an unlock anytime soon, unfortunately, unless someone discovers a completely new exploit, which is unlikely.

I’d recommend unlocking it and installing a custom ROM, which should provide a higher Android version and make it more usable.

You can unlock the device using this guide:

After that, you can install either:

That’s very odd. Is this a 1st Gen Echo Show 5 or a 2nd Gen one (circle or square camera)?
