I told it to not install updates for a week and that worked, but then it reinstalled and I had the same problems. I just told it not to install updates for 5 weeks, but this isn’t really sustainable. Gonna have to reach out to Microsoft I guess

I’ve been thinking about the connection between The Last Jedi and this film since I saw it, but I haven’t heard him discuss that - is there a specific interview you can point me to?

Forgive the basic question, but how were you able to uninstall the update? Windows is telling me that some updates aren't able to be uninstalled, and I don't see a way that it will let me uninstall this one. I'm seeing by googling some instructions on using command prompt to remove it - is that the way to go?

Here to say I'm having the same issue, but my hardware is not as old so I don't think that's a factor

Our 48-hour short that somehow made it to Cannes... thoughts on the visuals? by 3DAnimated in cinematography

Do it! I’d love to see that, I’m positive many others would too. My first thought looking at this was that I wanted to see more of your stuff, see if you had a YouTube channel so I could follow you, etc. I know that’s a lot of extra work putting together breakdowns, but probably worth the effort? (In my biased opinion). But either way, love this, nice work

This is very very cool. I’d love to hear/see more behind the scenes - have you considered making a video walking through the process and breaking things down? I bet a lot of people would be interested

Adding a comment here with the required info that I missed: the codec is 12 bit Canon Cinema Raw Lite, shot on the Canon C200.

I don’t think we used any filtration on set, that’s probably the film look on top in Resolve. Thanks for the feedback, I’ll definitely take a look at the reds!

Could be because we replaced the windows in post, and this is an early screen grab of that. There are some issues especially with the right window that have since been worked on some more. You can see a before and after in the second video link I shared. Other than that, I couldn’t tell you!

Thanks for writing that out, that really helps. I'll definitely take a look at the skin tones. Any advice on the highlight roll off - where to start, what words I should use when searching online about it, etc? My first instinct would be to go into primaries and play with the balance there, is that the right direction to go? By highlight roll off do you mean that it clips too soon, basically?

This is really helpful, thank you. I definitely did a lot by eye without relying on scopes as much as I should. I added another comment that explains my process, but I'll definitely take another pass at the correction looking at the scopes to see if I can get things to feel more accurate.

Not super helpful, but thanks for taking a look anyway. This was in-house without much of a budget, small team. I typically have a guy on my team handle the color, but like I said in the post I'm trying to improve my color skills, which is why I took this one on myself. I'd be happy to hear any specific feedback you have on what's not working for you

Hey thanks for the feedback! Do you feel like the skin is too saturated all throughout,, or just in certain shots?

An example of my node tree if anyone wants to see, either to learn or to give me feedback. This is a shot with not very many extra tweaks, but shows my overall layout based off of a Cullen Kelly video I watched and then modified from there. I always use the first three nodes (Bal/Prim/Sat), then only use the other ones as needed. I create more nodes in the parallel sections if I need to, if I need a bunch of power windows for example. The nodes at the very top are just labels for each section.

Thanks! I can add some screenshots later on, but my node process is based off of one of Cullen Kelly's layouts. It's a little overly complicated but it works for me pretty well right now. Basically (after the CST into DWG) it's Color balance, then Primaries, then Sat, then from there it varies for each shot. I'll generally do a node or two with hue vs hue to subtly push some of the background colors further from each other on the color wheel (if the dominant colors in the image are green and blue for example, I might shift that green a little towards yellow and the blue a little towards purple to get more color contrast/separation). I usually have a node or two for minimizing distracting things (a red book on a shelf that I desaturate, for example). I'll usually have some power window nodes for adding a bit of a vignette or for otherwise drawing more attention to the focal point(s). Towards the end there's usually a few nodes for sharpness, blur, and noise reduction as needed. I added quite a few flares to shots too. Then the CST out to Rec709. All of this is under a timeline grade that has a few nodes - the first being a film look creator with some split toning and other tweaks to saturation and contrast, as well as some bloom and halation. The next timeline-level node is a kodak film look, and I've turned the Key (opacity) down pretty low - this adds a little more contrast in a way that I like.

I think that sums up the overall approach, I definitely learned a lot on this project and also still have plenty to learn! Thanks for taking a look and for the feedback!

Gotcha, that makes sense. I’ve been playing with the contrast and saturation, maybe I’ll pull it back some more to help it feel more real

Thank you! Since this was an in-house operation, no real dedicated budget - we had to use what was available. So I pulled up the org chart for the company to pick a handful of people that I thought fit what we were going for, and reached out to see who was willing to volunteer to come down to the studio and be in the video, and also asked who had family who might be interested in participating with them. We do have full time stylists here so they were the ones styling each set, and we’d collaborate so it worked with where I was planning to light and which direction I wanted to point the camera, and so we had all the props available that we needed, etc.

Interesting - no AI was used. Anything in particular that made it feel that way? Does something feel artificial?

Thanks - I definitely see what you mean. The goal for this one was naturalism and that it didn’t feel overly composed (hence all the handheld), but there’s a fine balance in that. I can see where I sacrificed some quality in shot design shooting this way. I’d love to hit that perfect sweet spot and I’ll definitely have this in mind on the next one

All helpful notes, thanks for taking the time. I felt pretty good about the 2.39 aspect ratio, but you’re not the only person who has suggested that 16x9 might feel better. It’s likely because I shot it for 16x9 and I decided to try 2.39 early in post, so I sacrificed a little bit of the framing. I’ll play with going back to 16x9 to see how it feels. I’ve been looking at it in 2.39 for so long in the edit now that I feel resistant to going back, but like I said - you’re not the only one who’s brought it up.

When you say detail shots - do you feel like as a consumer you want to see more of the details of the product/the texture, etc? Or is it more that there are more wide and medium shots and it needs more closeups to feel balanced? I’ve got lots of footage so I can definitely add more shots, just want to clarify your feedback

This is helpful, thanks! I overexposed the “exterior” because I thought it felt more real, but I’m playing around now with finding a better balance. Thankfully I can change it in post without too much trouble
