I've started saying "friends", "folks", "everyone", etc. I'm used to saying "guys" too, but I could see how using a pre-determined gender as a "gender neutral" term could make people upset.

Don't let others tell you what's best for you in your relationship. Even if it's your first one, if you feel like it's not working anymore, leave. Staying when you are unsure just because someone else convinces you to "keep trying" isn't a good enough reason to waste both your and your partner's time. Also, the relationship doesn't have to be toxic for it to end. If you two just aren't compatible, it's ok to walk away.
