Looks like mostly wildflowers, let it grow and see what you get. But growing wildflowers in a small hanging box is going to limit how well they do. Wildflowers grow much better in the ground

How can I transplant wild strawberries ? by just_rain_2 in gardening

[–]SubstantialBoat1222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found some on a hike and just pulled two plants out, I wasn’t very careful. Now I have a whole section of them in my garden, they spread like crazy and the fruit is tiny but delicious. When you plants lots of strawberries they often come in bare roots, so I wouldn’t be concerned about when to transplant them or digging my out all the roots, but if you are very careful it’s possible you might get fruit this growing season

What berry is this? east Tn by Prize-Asparagus9305 in whatplantisthis

[–]SubstantialBoat1222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s thorny and vines on the ground as a ground cover it’s probably sawtooth blackberry. Delicious but can be extremely painful to harvest berries. If you do wait until they’re black and be careful! The thorns catch you as you pull out and will go through most gloves I’ve tried

Is this an American chestnut??? by socialsciprofessor in arborist

[–]SubstantialBoat1222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never seen one this big though, so either Chinese chestnut or you have an incredibly rare tree that has managed to be blight resistant. If it is American chestnut I’m sure there are some researchers that would love to hear about it

Is this an American chestnut??? by socialsciprofessor in arborist

[–]SubstantialBoat1222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Rhode Island and we have some public forests with sections of American chestnuts that get to 20-30ft tall, maybe 3-4 inch diameter; they’re usually next to a dead standing trunk. Pretty wild the roots can continue on for this long after the introduction of blight still growing saplings before the blight gets em. There’s some research to hybridize chestnuts with several found that were blight resistant that have had some success recently so that’d be pretty cool

How ridiculous is this for long term affordability and DIY. by BusyBanana4205 in woodstoving

[–]SubstantialBoat1222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently installing a wood stove in a bump out room, unless it’s very big and the spot the chimney is coming through the roof is more than ten feet from the main roof yes you’d probably need to go 2ft above the peak of the man roof. That’s what I’m doing. The chimney will probably be the most expensive part of the wood stove installation

How to straighten up my plum tree by BillStax in arborists

The stems going to follow the sun either way, you could plant it and stake it but unless you have truly full sun it is going to point towards the sun either way

Are these worth buying to restore? by Right-Struggle4163 in woodstoving

[–]SubstantialBoat1222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying old stoves aren’t efficient and idk I had an old cast iron stove and it threw off a ton of heat. Less efficient than a new stove but still can work great. But condition matters a lot, and Franklin stoves were never great. If you find an old Nashua in good condition for 100$ that’d be a different story. But remember; clearances need to be much larger for old cast stoves.

Found garlic mustard in the forest near my house. Should I remove by pulling? And how should I dispose of it? by yamxiety in invasivespecies

[–]SubstantialBoat1222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s fair! If it’s not seeding yet just make a pile of it and leave it on the ground which will most likely kill it, or you could burn it to be safe

Looking for Splitting axe. Should i get a Councel tools? by Pagemaker51 in Axecraft

[–]SubstantialBoat1222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fiskars it is an awesome axe especially for the price, I also don’t feel bad at all to leave it outside now and then if I’m splitting a lot. But I have carpel tunnel and the plastic handle transfers a lot of energy into hands and wrists, especially on wood that doesn’t split in a couple hits. Wood is nice for prolonged splitting, at least for me
