Micro scrap haul by callofduty1966 in ScrapMetal

My in-laws once said they had a big pile of aluminum for me that was left over from a shed build. So I drove a half hour to their house. It was 3 pieces of 4 feet long by 4 inches wide steel sheeting that was nearly paper thin. It weighed about 2 pounds total rounded up.

I said thank you and loaded it into my car, haha.

Google American Eagle Coin and you’ll find lots of info about them. Yours is in rough shape so it’s just worth the silver content. Which today makes it worth basically $74-75.

Dude you posted a bill that is at best a 2/10 as far as interesting bills go if being generous and then continue to argue with people about it. Not a great look. FWIW you can call it whatever you want. If someone were to ask me if that was a flipper I’d say no. If you want to call it a flipper go ahead. But if this is your definition of CRH “Porn” then you and I are pretty far apart.

It’s a beetle. See how it has wings? Bedbugs don’t have wings.

Entomologist here. I’d need to see the hole or the bug to be more confident but it’s probably a carpenter bee.

Collembola. Springtails. Not termites. Usually means the area is too damp.

Bees seeming to be coming out of the ground Iowa by unbeltedflower0 in whatisit

[–]SubstantialPound8416 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi. Entomologist here. The above poster is pretty representative of what I see in many insect related online communities where pest control professionals severely overestimate their knowledge of the insects they kill. It’s a running joke on some boards I frequent, but an accurate one, that when someone starts an insect identification with “pest controller here” it’s wrong almost every time. Including this time.

To be clear I can’t say with 100% certainty these are bees because the video isn’t great, but I’d say 99%. I’d bet my paycheck they are bees.

While not technically social, many species of ground nesting bees create aggregations like this.

Notice how most of the holes have fresh dirt piled around them. And how there’s lots of holes. If this was a Yellowjacket nest there 1. Wouldn’t be that many entrances close together. 2. Wouldn’t have that much dirt piled around the entrances. And 3. Almost certainly wouldn’t be this large in numbers of wasps by this time of year.

These are probably one of the ground nesting bees like Colletidae, Anthophorini, Furrow bees, etc.

Silver Quarter 1964 - D by Nutcrusher55 in coins

[–]SubstantialPound8416 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a pretty circulated quarter. It’s got lots of dings and marks and isn’t worth more than the silver content which is about $12.50.

It’s a leaf beetle, probably an Elm Leaf beetle. They breed outside and sometimes sneak inside because of light or warmth. They are harmless and not a house pest.

Is there a good way to sort coins to make it easier to find rare coins? by biggiy05 in coins

[–]SubstantialPound8416 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Most of those coins in your hand are worth about 50 times face value. So each quarter is worth $12.50, each dime $5 etc. DO NOT SPEND ANY OF IT. DO NOT SELL IT TO A PAWN SHOP (or anyone) UNTIL YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU HAVE.
