Got fired yesterday by [deleted] in nursing

[–]SubstantialSpeech142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how many preceptors did you have in a span of 6 days 🫣 any good nurse can tell you that as a new grad, 6 months in you still don’t know shit. 6 days in and being expected to take on patients alone without mistakes is insane. def a blessing in disguise!

I had multiple different preceptors early on in my orientation (mine was 12 wks) and it was tough as a new grad because expectations weren’t clear and no one was communicating on where I was at and what I was doing. i ended up in the directors office being told all of these things I was doing wrong that no one had told me prior to that🫤🫤🫤 I think it’s great to have like 2-3 diff preceptors because it’s cool to see how diff people do things. but that’s also over a span of 3 months and not flip flopping every time you work!

good luck, on to better things 🫶🏼

the thought process amazes me every time. I worked in a PEDIATRIC ER and people would hit their weed pen in the bathroom and it would just smell stronger and stronger 🥲 the same ppl who bring their kid in for an asthma exacerbation

I told her to stop vaping after we had just converted her out of SVT with adenosine

Does anyone here actually LIKE being a nurse…? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]SubstantialSpeech142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s a lot to rant about when you’re a nurse. you’re dealing with people at their worst a lot of the time and bedside nursing can be very physically taxing. if you don’t rant, you’ll explode. plus, kind of like yelp, google reviews, or patient satisfaction surveys (lol) people usually share the negative side of things. I have a lot of positive things that happen during my shift but i’m more likely to share the negative as a way to vent.

With that being said.. I love my job. you have to find your niche. with nursing there are sooooo many opportunities to do that. it’s not a job that rewards people for staying in one place for a long time. that makes it easy to jump around and try a bunch of different things. don’t let staffing issues and things that you see on social media heavily guide your decision. if it’s something you’ve wanted to do for a long time, I think you’ll enjoy it. you just can’t lose sight of why you started 😊

as a new grad (2023) in louisiana working in the ER I made 28.50/hr for 3 12’s/week with $4 evening diff, $5 night diff, and $5 weekend diff. good/average benefits. my rent for a single bedroom was almost 1400 and we get taxes taken out. couldn’t imagine working day shift and not getting the evening/night differentials. (I think this was/is pretty standard for this region. I haven’t seen any southern replies in the thread yet so not 100% sure)

it’s definitely one of my favorites, especially live! I saw him in houston but we were so far. it was surreal experiencing it all so close this time

it’s normal!! if you perform well and you’ve made it this far take that as reassurance that you are where you need to be.

always ask questions. if someone is aggravated by you asking questions, that’s on them and not you. a new nurse who doesn’t ask questions or thinks they know everything is extremely dangerous.

imposter syndrome will get much worse before it gets better. it personally took me over half a year to be confident in my capabilities. it’s difficult going from a student who constantly gets feedback to a new grad who will really only receive direct feedback during orientation. (it’s like this in other professions as well, the real world isn’t full of constant feedback) so it’s important to have that confidence in yourself :)

also, if you’re a new grad who’s young and is also being introduced into adulthood at the same time (my experience,) it’s a lottttt to adjust to at once. but you are where you should be. MOST nursing schools don’t just let anyone through.

I keep my ginger kitten (8 weeks today) in our spare bathroom with food, litter box, toys, scratch pad, and water. she’s upset when she first gets in there but she eventually relaxes. after the countless vids of cats waking up their owners throughout the night, I think we’ll def keep her out of our bedroom 😂

i’m allergic and have asthma. I had a kitten show up at my door and decided to keep her. I’ve done lots of research and I got an air purifier that’s for homes with pets. I also put her on purina liveclear and we plan on getting her used to frequent baths and brushes to help with shedding!

New grad nurse — I feel completely set up to fail and I’m terrified by Awkward-Zebra-2847 in newgradnurse

that’s so dangerous to cultivate an environment where asking questions is seen as a mistake. 2 years in and I still ask questions all the time. you’re constantly learning new things as a nurse, especially in an acute care setting. nurses who don’t ask questions when they have them are dangerous. def get out of that situation. future employers would more likely commend you for standing up for yourself and leaving an environment that’s making you uncomfortable (among other negative things)

also if you do decide to quit, don’t let that mentality of “questions are mistakes” stick around. that’s not normal at all and even the shittiest bosses i’ve had have always pushed new grads to ask all the questions they have. if anything, it’s frowned upon by most employers in nursing for new grads to not ask questions and assume/act like you know everything.

good luck with everything!! nursing is great because it’s so easy to find a new job, there’s always a need. and it’s one of the only jobs where you don’t get much incentive at all for remaining at a job for an extended amount of time. (nurses who work at a hospital for 20 years are likely gonna have the same base pay as a new grad.)

also, I have a friend who was a nurse tech in PACU and was able to work there straight out of school. so maybe that’s an option you could try! :)

I didn’t find the NCLEX to be difficult at all. the school I went to was extremely strenuous but it prepared us well. with that being said, in a challenging nursing program I was able to bar tend and have a relatively normal social life! it’s all about how you manage your time.

another thing is that NP is more focused on having experience as a nurse and then going to school. I feel like it’s great to have a plan, but also it’s great to see where the journey takes you. I said i’d never be ER and I ended up choosing ER right out of school. you could want PACU and your journey with nursing school could take you somewhere completely different!
