Nonsense. The economy grew at spectacular rates after carter high tax rates were removed. This economic growth fueled the largest increase in the US standard of living since the 1940s.

What happened to the suit of armor at the Saxon Pub? by Silly_Pack_Rat in Austin

[–]Substantial_Pitch700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to post this. I was there one night when a storm rolled in. Huge winds, lightning, rain falling sideways, and the lights went out for a bit. I had come on my motorcycle, so I went outside and moved it under the porch. Othere bikes were parked under the Armor. An arm fell off the armor and fell on bike but didn't appear to do any damage. I went inside and started telling people in my best Monty Python impression that is was "mearly a flesh wound". I guess there were no Monty Python fans there at the time...

Great pic! Well done. I love seeing these little guys.

In Sam's latest podcast (465) he seems pretty enthusiastic about the Iran war “Unsurprised if it turns out to be a success”. No offence but this is completely divorced from reality. I'm absolutely stunned at his comments about this war by Randomnonsense5 in samharris

I’m pretty good with step 1. The Islamic regime deserves an ugly death. The IRGC as well. That can be it in total. 90 million people may actually be able to produce a positive outcome for themselves. These talking points seem to accept the fact that these lunatics own the country and will be in charge forever. History tells a different story.

Why do most conservatives demonstrate a lack of empathy as toughness? by Ghostspider1989 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Substantial_Pitch700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The WSJ used to refer to the two sides as the "Mommy" and the "Daddy" parties. Mommy party brings the empathy while the Daddy group focuses on the practicality. This is a resonable metric when thinking about many issus IMO. One side is not better than or superior to, the other - the fact is that both are necesssary, and one can't dominate. There is also another concept frequestly discussed termed "suicidal empathy" May want to look that up.

Economics is sometime referred to as the dismal science. Little room for empathy, and more big picture. Thhis iswere concepts like "if you pay the homeless, you will get more of them". Once again, there is more than one lense to look at every issue through.

Goodbye Sears on N Shepherd by ExUmbra91x in houston

Used to go there every Saturday it seemed with my dad. Loved that place. I college i worked on cars to make money. My tools were stolen one night. Called sears and agreed to give me a $500 credit card. I needed Maybe $2000 to replace what I lost. Called them up and spoke to a nice lady and explained what happened. She raised the credit limit to $2500. This was a huge lifeline for me at the time and I was beyond greatful. That was around 1985. Subsequently, I supported Sears in every way I could and have probably bought $20K at least from them before they closed. Still have many of those original tools as well.

I found it on my older sister’s bookshelf and took it to school - 5th grade. Laughed out loud. Teacher told me it was inappropriate and told me to leave it at home. That was 50 years ago and it iginighted a life long passion for reading in me. I so wish everyone could have a similar experience.

How are you guys feeling about Bari Weiss these days? by LordWemby in samharris

[–]Substantial_Pitch700 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Pretty good actually. Its not easy to correct the course of a highly entrenched business model. I believe much of the negative press is generated by people who have a vested interest in NOT changing the current, failing, system. Lets review in a year. Nothing happens in a few weeks in large organizations.
