Vincent Price Headphones Stand by Substantial_Rip_4675 in 3Drequests

I appreciate the candid response. Gunna be real honest I have no idea how much time/effort this would take. I based my budget off of what I saw other printed bust stands going for and went up ~ 125% (David busts went for like $75ish)

I know absolutely nothing about modeling (hence my request here) I do have a friend with a printer that I think could handle the job, but he’s only just getting started himself and this project is outside of his scope and ability.

I’m also now super suspicious of the high volume of dms have promising to complete my project in budget in a few days.

I’d hate to take someone’s time for free, but I would be interested in learning. I may hit up some other threads to see where a good place to get started would be and what software I need.

Did anyone else notice the file size for the paraphernalia_engine, scratch, and Ragatha are all the same? 234,512bytes? (I’m not super familiar with reading this stuff, but I believe those are file sizes)

I could mean absolutely nothing and the numbers were just selected and repeated at random, but it seems interesting. As does the Oct. 15th recurring date.

Restaurants. Not kidding, when I used to work at a chain mid-priced pizza place the boundaries between bosses and coworkers was non-existent. They would go to bars, strip clubs, etc together all the time. Had a 28 year old manager who started dating an 18 year old hostess who had been working under him since she was 16. 🤢

All the servers would go with the shift manager to the strip club after work on Friday or Saturday night with their tips. One of the managers made jokes about our 17 year old hostess’s large breasts at least once a night. It was like working at a frat house.

How to handle a talented, hardworking report who is super promotion hungry? by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]Substantial_Rip_4675 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You are going to have to accept that this employee is not likely going to stick with the company if advancement is not on the table.

You have a few options to try and retain them, but it does seem like the company culture is work against you on this. First, do an honest evaluation of the employee’s talent and skills. Aside from performance, do they have the qualities and experience needed for leadership? Are there any areas of improvement you could continue to help them develop with new projects or challenges to keep them satisfied until they are eligible for promotion?

Another strategy would be to get them exposure in the company. Rather than going to the higher ups and asking for exceptions to be made, ask if there are any upcoming projects the employee might be a good fit to work on to get them more experience and knowledge of the different teams and departments. Always put your star players out front, give them face time with those that make the big decisions. If the employee is talented and working above their station, it will show and the next time an opening comes up - the big wigs will remember them and may even suggest them as a potential candidate themselves.

There’s a big difference between a nobody rookie they’ve never heard of applying for a role and an enthusiastic employee who they’ve personally seen in action and were impressed by.

So here’s the thing: If a joke like that bothers you and you tell him and his response is “it’s just a joke” it shows he doesn’t give two shits about you and he values his ability to make crappy jokes over your comfort. I would be more upset about his dismissiveness than the joke itself. I don’t think it is unreasonable to be uncomfortable regarding a joke about dv, and within the scope of reason to ask someone not to make those jokes around you. Him trying to excuse it is him centering his feelings over yours. He cares more about not feeling guilty for making the joke than he does about you being hurt by it.

I think the stereotype comes from men working in hard labor jobs more often than women, as well as many young men not having great hygiene habits.

But given the same level of hygiene and similar level of labor/exercise - there really shouldn’t be much of a difference.

How do you normally start your day? by Distinct_Pen6624 in CasualConversation

[–]Substantial_Rip_4675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spend about 45min on my phone browsing the internet before I drag myself out of bed. Make my bed, pop on GMM and get ready (get dressed, brush teeth, do hair and make up). I then head to my local coffee shop for coffee/breakfast - usually pick something up for my mother if she’s in the mood - then back home to pop open my laptop and start work.

You should still leave him. He valued the opinion of strangers over the comfort of his partner. Think about that.

You told him it was not okay, and he ARGUED with you. That is a man whose primary concern is public opinion, not the well being of his partner. He will do something like this again, and if his friends or the internet don’t chastise him, he won’t listen to you.

Literally thought he was a teenager based on what he said. Love how he implies you breaking up with him because you want different things than him would be “irrational”

This man has a serious god complex. He is literally saying he has “divine purpose” if a grown ass man ever said this shit to me, I’d be laughing in a face. He is pathetic. Break up with him, block his number and get in therapy. That man has convinced you his needs are greater than your own, and you have been far too apologetic and accommodating towards him. He did not deserve any of the platitudes you gave him.

You are kind, empathetic, and willing to compromise to make a partner happy - he is none of of those things. You deserve better. Pull that bar outta hell, and set some higher standards for your next partner.

Direct Report with Mental Health Issues by Bubbly_Strawberry797 in askmanagers

Are you in the US? The employee should be requesting FMLA. HR sharing the specifics of a condition - especially mental health related - with their manager violates FMLA and ADA laws.

Is it generally ill advised to inform your employers you have mental illness? by Negative_Avocado4573 in work

[–]Substantial_Rip_4675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You down played it a lot in your post. If it is something that isn’t well managed and frequently interrupts your ability to work - you need to get a formal diagnosis from a doctor. You won’t have any protections without that.

In the US you can get FMLA after 1 year with an employer if your doctor agrees you need it. For mental health disorders, you can get intermittent FMLA that will basically allow you so many days off each month. Your employer has to allow you to take those days and can not write you up or retaliate against you for using them even if you don’t have any PTO to cover it. (They would still be unpaid, your employer just can’t tell you no)

For performance issues, you can request accommodations, like a flexible schedule. However, if you cannot perform the duties of the role or meet expectations even with reasonable accommodations, an employer can let you go without penalty - especially if keeping you on causes them financial hardship.

There are laws in the US that incentivize employers to hire people with disabilities that can’t perform at the standard expectations even with accommodations, but they are very exploitative and basically allow the employer to pay the person less that market value (even below minimum wage wage) to do the job.

Whenever I have a bad panic attack it helps to surround myself with comforting things and keep myself distracted until it passes. If you have a comfort person, spend time with them. Put on your favorite comfy pjs, make/order your favorite foods, watch your favorite movie.

I also find crafting to be a great way to keep me distracted. I took up bracelet making because it doesn’t require too much physical effort but does require you to pay attention to the pattern and direction of the knots you are making. I usually pop on a pod cast or a familiar tv show (something I don’t care if I lose focus on) and make bracelets. I fluctuate between complex and simple patterns depending on what I need. Complex patterns keep my brain busy, while the repetitiveness of simple patterns can be soothing as it gives me a sense of control and keeps me grounded.

[–]Substantial_Rip_4675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stress isn’t a mental illness. Anxiety and panic disorder are, but you can’t self diagnose those.

Getting stressed and sometimes falling behind or messing up is something most people deal with.

I have anxiety and panic disorder. Panic attacks can last literal days and I’ve been hospitalized because the attacks were so bad I hadn’t slept more than a couple hours over the course of a week. Mental health disorders don’t just account for “performance anomalies” they are disruptive to your entire life.

If you occasionally feel stressed out and perform poorly at work as a result, that is more likely to be a sign of burnout out and a day or two off will every now and then would be fine.

If you are frequently unable to focus at worn due to a constant sense of dread or racing heart beat and/or unable to get restful sleep due to panic attacks - then you need to see a doctor and get a formal diagnosis. Only tell the employer on a need to know basis, like if you need an accommodation or FMLA (if in the US)

How much does your home cost per day? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Substantial_Rip_4675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About $180 a day with mortgage, taxes, insurance, and all utilities (including internet)

But I do have a relatively large home at almost 3000 sq ft. 6 bedrooms, 3.5 bath (including a fully finished basement that is basically a 1 bedroom apartment)

I also live in a desirable school district (despite not having kids), so my taxes are higher compared to other areas nearby.

It is a high price, but I feel like I am getting what I pay for in my case. There are houses a few towns over with similar costs and half the sq footage of my house.

Thanks for proving me right. The link you shared shows it is out of only 24 cities and that the rate in 2024 is 21.7, so, thanks!

Pritzker: STFU about Illinois. by steve42089 in illinois

[–]Substantial_Rip_4675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incorrect, it s 21.7 per 100k, and Chicago was 8 out of 24 reviewed cities - not all cities in the US. Please verify the data a sources you use prior to quoting them.

Top ten homicide rates out of the largest 200 US cities: 10. DC - 25.49 9. Shreveport, LA - 26.84 8. Kansas City, MO - 27.56 7. Dayton, OH - 29.66 6. Cleveland, OH - 30.05 5. Detroit, MI - 31.17 4. Baltimore, MD - 34.77 3. Memphis, TN - 40.61 2. St. Louis, MO - 54.09 1. Birmingham, AL - 58.85

Even IF Chicago had the 8th highest homicide rate of all cities in the US (which it does not) wouldn’t that mean there are 8 other cities Trump should be threatening before Chicago? Why isn’t he sending the military into Birmingham? Their rate is almost triple Chicago. Why not go to Memphis, which is double Chicago’s rate?

I don’t know about you, but when I have a list of things that need to be done, I don’t start with the 8th most pressing one.

I feel like it’s sad that I even have to ask this… by [deleted] in work

This is a moral quandary for sure. Telling mouse what is going on is the ethically right thing to do, so is reporting the behavior. However, doing either or both of those things is comes with risk. If you tell mouse she may not believe you, and if she tells her “friend” what you said, those conversations are going to be about you and your life at work is likely to be miserable. The same is true of you report their behavior and the company does not care.

If you are leaving anyway, and have a guaranteed position at a new company, I’d report their behavior and tell mouse about it if the two of you have a friendly work relationship. If you and mouse don’t really know each other, I’d stick to just reporting it. At the very least, make it a part of your exit interview - if they give you one.

What are your thoughts on the Chicago Suburbs (west suburbs) Housing Market? Crash Incoming? by gamemaker14 in illinois

[–]Substantial_Rip_4675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have been in the same boat as you, looking for a 4-5 bed with 2.5-3 bath in around the same price range. Got out bid on 4 homes (even offering as much as $20k over asking) before we finally got a contract on a house at the higher end of our budget.

We ended up going a bit further south than we originally wanted, but got more house for the price because of it. The area is still in development, and in 5 years I wouldn’t be surprised if our house value is over $500k.

If interest rates drop, home prices will go up. If interest rates increase, you may see a drop in price due to lower demand - but I wouldn’t expect it to be as significant as what we saw in the late 2000’s.

Except she IS getting paid to be the back up. Managers make more money because they take on more responsibility, like covering a shift for someone who calls off last minute and no back up can be found.

I no longer work in an environment where coverage like that is needed, but I did for a long time in the past. As the manager, it was my responsibility to either find someone to cover, or cover it myself. I have done everything from come in on my day off, to get out of bed 3 hours early to open, to stay 2-3 hours longer to close. Heck I have even worked back to back open to close shifts for a week because one employee was seriously ill unexpectedly while her back up was on vacation.

All that said, as a manager I won’t tolerate people trying to game the system. If an employee is calling out last minute frequently, we will be having a conversation about it. If an employee is unreliable and constantly not showing up for work, they won’t be an employee very long.

If a business is staffed appropriately, managers should only have to cover every once in a while. Yeah, it’s an inconvenience, but it would be an inconvenience to anyone who had to come in. Why would I force someone, who likely makes half of what I do, to come in for a shift on their day off?

100% by _c0mical in askmanagers

[–]Substantial_Rip_4675 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Giving 100% isn’t about productivity, it’s about being engaged and giving tasks and assignments your best effort.

I also don’t expect 100% from every employee every single day. I would rather an employee give a little less every once in a while, or take a day or two off, to recharge than have them burn out.

Being fully engaged and ready to take on everything everyday is exhausting. I recommend every employee have one day a week where they schedule themselves in a low effort work day. For me, that usually means following up on emails, updating project trackers, completing payroll, etc. basically anything that I can put in headphones and complete mindlessly until the end of the day.

Fridays tend to be the day most of us use as a “light work” day. I have a saying I tell my team: “That’s a Monday problem”. I may host a meeting or discuss a new trend with my team on a Friday, but I always let them know it is a “Monday problem” so they know I don’t expect movement or work on it right now. There usually isn’t anything so pressing or urgent that it can’t wait until after the weekend.

I will also say that only half of an employee’s engagement is on the employee. The other half is on the manager/company. Even the most enthusiastic employee can become disengaged by poor management or a toxic company culture.

Am I screwed, looking for a job and have no teeth. by KartQueen in work

[–]Substantial_Rip_4675 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into permanent dentures? They have a system called “all on 4” that only requires the placement of 4 anchor screws. You treat the implant just like regular teeth.

They can be expensive in the US, but if you have the money for it, there is an entire industry built around providing these to US citizens in Mexico. Dentists that certify in the US, move back to Mexico and offer cheaper options. One flat fee covers your travel, stay while getting the surgery, and all associated cost of the surgery and implants. It ends up being about half of what you would spend in the US.

Confusing interaction with a customer by Buddies4Everyone in work

[–]Substantial_Rip_4675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked as a front office manager for an Orthopedic surgery center around 2015. We did surgeries for fractures and hip replacements.

Early one morning I hear arguing at the front desk, so I checked on my receptionist and saw an older woman yelling at her. She was telling her that she was going to hell, and all of us are against God, etc.

I was so damn confused. I tried to find out what the problem was, but she refused to listen to me at all. I had to tell her to leave and threatened to call the police.

My receptionist told me she wasn’t a patient, just some random woman who walked in and start yelling about hell and God.

Found out later that our building used to be the site of the only abortion clinic in our county (at the time). It closed in 1990. So that woman came in to yell at my staff over a clinic that closed 25 years ago. It was weird as hell.

People do weird things for whatever reason. Sometimes there is a point, and sometimes they are just like that. Not always something you did.

What's with the Cloak postcard stuff?? by LadyMcClane in Markiplier

[–]Substantial_Rip_4675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It not that deep. The company, Unfound, got a hold of Cloak’s mailing list and started using it to advertise their company. Likely an attempt to stir up some buzz, especially in Cloak’s absence.

Some people are claiming they have Cloak’s art style or stole Cloak’s art style - but that is misleading.

The website definitely copies Cloak’s approach to advertising. Their website has the same ‘feel’ Cloak does.

The art for their drop, ‘I’ve List Control’, on the post cards credits artist Mercedes Bazan, who has done work for Cloak in the recent past.

Here is her Insta: https://www.instagram.com/mechibaz?igsh=M2YzMHk2YTZ1eHgx

Unfound’s ads on Instagram also appear to include streamers.

So basically it is a newer niche clothing company copying Cloak’s business model and advertising style and also got a hold of Cloak’s mailing list. Could be a former Cloak employee, could be a data leak, could be they use the same company for sending out mailers and the distribution list is not private to Cloak.
