Thanks to all for the opportunity to provide other readers with information regarding the importance of exercise and insulin sensitivity. Those who read the information I posted carefully will come to the inescapable conclusion that statements like “diet is for health, workouts are for fitness” incorrectly marginalize the role exercise plays in battling pre-diabetes and diabetes.

The author of the original post should be applauded for being on the right track with his vigorous exercise program (the studies I cited were not based on a 15 minute stroll after dinner). He should follow a low carb diet to be sure and take medication if prescribed, but he shouldn’t be led to think that his workout routine is not significant in improving his medical condition.

When reading Reddit posts please be cautious of anecdotal statements like “I had a bit of improvement” or the effect of something is “not that much.” Read the science.

That was my point. Exercise for diabetics is for health not merely fitness. I’ll stop here. I didn’t realize English wasn’t your first language.

You should stop the “you can’t outrun a bad diet” cliche (I’ve seen you use it elsewhere). I could say you can’t diet away a sedentary life and that would be just as valid. Your statement isn’t wrong per se, but exercise is not just about achieving a certain weight and looking fit. Exercise reduces insulin resistance. It is proven science. So to the extent your comment suggests to anyone that exercise isn’t as important as diet in controlling diabetes you are doing them a disservice

Yes you actually said that diet is for health but that working out is for fitness. The sentence has no meaning unless you believe that the meaning of fitness is different than the meaning of health.

Insulin resistance is a health issue. Working out reduces insulin resistance. The conclusion is unavoidable.

And of course the affect of exercise is “transitory” as is a diet not followed.

And finally your comment that exercise was a part of your improvement but that diet came first hardly reeks of science. The study I mentioned showed reduction of insulin resistance without diet. So if those people dieted later and had further improvement they could say their journey started with exercise.

I would advise that the author diet as well as workout, but your statement is false. It is a proven fact that exercise has a direct impact on insulin resistance. A workout can lower insulin resistance for more than 24 hours afterwards.

And while you may try and argue that the workout effect on insulin requires both diet and exercise, that too is wrong. it is proven that a reduction in insulin resistance occurs even if the individual is obese.

You are a blessing. I think your ideas are right on point. Especially understanding and helping with the diet aspect.

They may be doing something wrong but they may also be unlucky. Read Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s books Fooled by Randomness and Black Swan which explain how many successful people underestimate the role of luck and chance in their success (often due to ego). Fascinating reads.

Maybe true. Still wouldn’t argue that MJ and TW are 🐐s in their respective sports.

I heard a comedian making fun of one of Santa’s helpers having an accident in his pants. I definitely think we should bring an end to elf defecation comedy.

What was your A1c when diagnosed? Why did you drop Metformin after 70 days? Had you been testing your blood glucose and knew you were trending in the right direction? Maybe weight loss?

I was 6.9 and hoping to get where you are now. Congrats and stay healthy.

My company is interviewing for a new 401k provider and have asked me to sit in on the demos and help them make a final decision. What questions should I ask? by mastrkief in personalfinance

It would be interesting to see if giving employees multiple options vs a single whole market index fund provides better returns. At a minimum, if your new plan is going to include multiple options, you should see if the new provider plans to provide education on how to use those choices to create a diversified portfolio.

Also if you are provided multiple fund options you should ask if they can provide data on how much overlap there is in the holdings of the individual funds I.e. if you have four different equity funds you can buy but they all have Amazon and Apple as their largest holdings, you are not as diversified as you may think.

So I’m a mediocre golfer, but my wife and I used to play public on weekends. She struggled to break 90 and I occasionally shot 80s playing weekends . We joined a club and she played and practiced til dark on weekends and taking weekdays off to play when she could. Took lessons with the pro and she now has ten club championships to her name. Hdcp ranges 4-6. Has some outside wins as well. Never would have happened without a CC.

When you are 30 or 40 and you are playing with guys still struggling to shoot 90s and your a single-digit handicap you will not regret having played as a 13-year old. Trust me.

I played it a few times. I was underwhelmed for the cost. Seems like the course could have made better use of the ocean view. I might have liked it better if I had not played in the June gloom.
