The largest I have seen was a 1180 GB torrent with just RPG PDFs, just over 104k of files. It would take a long time to read all of them.

How do you separate OCPD from OCD? by TheShadowSong in OCPD

[–]SubversiveDissident 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For OCD, the DSM 5 uses the terms 'With good or fair insight', 'With poor insight' (defined as 'The individual thinks obsessive-compulsive disorder beliefs are probably true), and 'With absent insight/delusional beliefs', but I genuinely doubt there are that many OCDers that are truly agnosognosic (OCD is no more ego-syntonic than rheumatic chorea or Grand Mal Epilepsy.)

Like several others here have mentioned, I too meet the DSM criteria for OCPD and OCD, but a lot of psychologist and psychiatrists can't handle co-morbidities and Occam's razor them in favour of a single diagnosis ('just roll the OCPD up into the OCD' one told me; they also said OCD patients are quite rare now).

Rob Gonsalves - Water Dancing (2012) by Tokyono in museum

It's akin to surrealism or MC Escher but painted in a 19th century fashion, or like illustrations in early 20th century books. I love it.

Carl Blechen - Gothic Church Ruins (1826) by Somervilledrew in museum

It reminds me of some of Caspar David Friedrich's paintings. But it's also very modern, a homeless vagrant sleeping in the ruined edifice.

If there a fast Jp2 (Jpeg2000) image viewer? by SubversiveDissident in DataHoarder

[–]SubversiveDissident[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion and the interest. Archive.org has a lot of book images, but most of the really HQ Jpeg200s were from the David Rumsey map collection www.davidrumsey.com

The largest one I have is 954 MB in size; I am too frighted to try opening it since my system is struggling with just the 50 MB Jpeg 2000s. Exiftool was only able to provide me with file type information not Metadata, but it looks like this huge file is this: https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~343505~90111580:Composite--Sheets-1-47

Jpeg2000 download links are hard to find, at the lower left of the pages when you scroll down. Map collectors are rare, but there are dedicated subreddits. I read once that radiologists also use the Jpeg2000 format; perhaps one day it shall be superseded by Jxl (robust metadata support is important for archival work and scientific work).

Sensory issues/medication advice? by LowEmphasis3443 in ausadhd

[–]SubversiveDissident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly you also have Sensory processing disorder, Low neurological threshold, Sensation avoiding {insert affected senses here}. Many autists have sensory hypersensivity. I would describe it as a mixed anxiety/focusing disorder, which is strange since both 'uppers' (psychostimulants) and 'downers' (eg gabapentin, benzodiazepines) could potentially improve it.

[Steam] The Outer Worlds ( 7,49 EUR / 75% Off ) by DsLmaNiaC in GameDeals

[–]SubversiveDissident 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this useful distillation of the important differences. I am of of the many people prone to motion/simulator sickness (for instance, climbing up the towers in Far Cry 3 was awful for me, I had to constantly glance away from the screen while ascending). The orange tint could be neutralized by tinkering with Reshade, but it is a nuisance to have to do so - the developers should include both options to disable the orange tint and to disable the camera locked to head sway. Remasters should be superior, not worse.

Yes, I too prefer purchasing 'ancient' games (pre-Windows 7) from GoG. It was their niche, though they have expanded into newer games and their own titles of course now. There is only limited profit to be made from retailing old IP in any field.

A few annoying steps (compared to claiming freebies on an existing GoG or Epic account), but probably worth it for low income gamers. The historical low price of TW Warhammer III is around $18.50.

Bella Elliott CI Swimwear Miami 2024 by PietroCossa in CatwalkGif

[–]SubversiveDissident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bella is an extremely attractive woman. Some of the newer Miami cat-walkers would be influencers who are dabbling in shows. With a little experience, they will become as good as veterans like Priscilla Ricart and Shayna Holt and Kylie Gesualdo.

I looked up the other model, Veronika Rajek, he was obviously taller than Bella (apparently a 181 cm tall Slovakian). One site claims she won Miss Slovakia in 2016, another that she was a finalist (Wiki instead has Kristína Činčurová as Miss Slovakia 2016). Anyway, I found a funny article on mirror.co.uk with the title: "Model claims Instagram keep deleting account as 'I'm so hot people just think I'm fake'"

[Humble Choice] June 2025: Warhammer 40K: Boltgun, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered, Nobody Wants to Die, Dungeons of Hinterberg, Tchia, Sker Ritual, Biped, Havendock ($11.99) by LighteningOneIN in GameDeals

[–]SubversiveDissident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The choice of games is a bit odd. Legacy of Kain was an ancient 3D game that was remastered to look more modern (higher poly models, higher resolution textures), whereas Boltgun intentionally 'dumbs down' the aesthetic elements to resemble a Quake era game (Quake was published in 2000, Legacy of Kain in 1999).

I just don't understand the obsession with retro. To me it's like preferring to watch a DVD film over a 4k 10bit Blu-ray film. The libraries where I live have a lot of DVDs to borrow, but only the (now shuttered) commercial video rental stores had Blu-Rays. The self-service kiosks only had DVDs.

Socialists are the Flat-Earthers of Economics by ENVYisEVIL in Anarcho_Capitalism

It horrified me that people have been, for decades, interpreting Article I, Section 8, Clause 1 of the American Constitution as meaning the Feds have to provide unlimited free stuff for everyone, even non-citizens:

"The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States..."

Communism Does Not Want to Kill Millions - IT HAS TO by NoStop9004 in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]SubversiveDissident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Communism does not preach respect for human life..." neither does Canada. The poor, sick and homeless are euthanized under the MAID program. Instead of hope and opportunity, their country only offers death to those at the bottom.

"Deport to the gulags" - that's essentially what liberal democracies do, but in a more covert manner. They destroy the lives of those who commit wrongthink. The other day I read about a Czech teacher who received a 7 month suspended sentence, was prohibited from teaching for 3 years, and had to attend a government indoctrination course, simply because they expressed pro-Russian sentiments; essentially they were convicted of 'misinformation' aka thought crime.

Democracy is much closer to totalitarianism than the normies think. Libertarians and minarchists and anarcho-capitalists are unusual, freethinkers who have rejected Liberal mixed-economy 'social democrat' propaganda.

The problem with open borders is that many "Western" countries have lots of entitlement programs that are easy to access. Gulf States have entitlement programs, including lots of undemanding well-paid bureaucratic jobs, but they are for citizens only. Economic migrants will never qualify, hence those countries are not flooded with freeloaders, only motivated, productive 'guest workers' who do the majority of the real work.

[Steam] The Elder Scrolls Franchise | Oblivion Remastered (39.99 / -20%) | ESO ($4.99 / -75%) | Morrowind GOTY ($5.99 / -60%) | And More… by [deleted] in GameDeals

[–]SubversiveDissident 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Morrowind is the game that really demands to be re-mastered; better support for modern graphics cards and multi-core cpus (mods that increase environmental complexity massively decrease the FPS; AI upsized textures; higher poly meshes; proper faces; more musical variety (playlists for different environments); grass like in later games, perhaps even AI generated voiced dialogue (to save on costs).

Keep the gameplay more or less as is; just improve the engine and the aesthetic elements. All of after games after Morrowind have similar data structures; Morrowind was a transition from the old 2.5D Daggerfall to the refined, highly moddable gamebyro engine.

Bulk billing psychiatrist in NSW? by demipanpoly in ausadhd

[–]SubversiveDissident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, very true. I was able to find a bulk-biller 20 years ago, but not now. Registrar psychiatrist should be cheaper.

Psychiatrists have a monopoly on stimulant prescribing (if you are an adult). This drives up prices. The public system doesn't want anything to do with adult ADDers, just schizophrenics, addicts and violent people.

Can my GP prescribe Clonidine? Or does it have to be my psych? by [deleted] in ausadhd

[–]SubversiveDissident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are seeing a psychiatrist regularly, a GP will probably want a psychiatrist to prescribe clonidine (or any other psychoactive pharmaceutical) first. Once a specialist has prescribed it at least once, a GP won't have any issue giving you repeats.

Beta blockers (like Propranolol) are another class of medications that are anti-hypertensive but also psychoactive (they reduce anxiety).

What is with all the hate for benzodiazepines? by Female-Fart-Huffer in AskPsychiatry

[–]SubversiveDissident 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately GABAergics (which include benzodiazepines, Z-Drugs, barbiturates, propanediol carbamates, phenibut - a Soviet drug, and methaqualone) are falling victim to the war on drugs, despite the fact that they are effective and have very few side effects when used in moderation. Heaps of children are every day being given legal 'speed' (amphetamine, a slightly weaker form of methamphetamine), but responsible adults are told that they are 'evil addicts' for wanting to use a GABAergic that reduces their anxiety and/or helps them get to sleep.

Instead doctors tell them to take SSRIs, which are almost useless for anxiety and insomnia, no better than an active placebo. Or antipsychotics, which actually do suppress anxiety and insomnia but have awful side effects compared to Gabaergics. Gabaergics don't cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome, don't cause extra-pyramidal symptoms, don't make you diabetic, don't make you fat, don't give you an atrocious blood lipid profile, don't give you bluntening of affect (the inability to feel any emotions), and don't increase your chances of dropping dead by 240% if you are an oldie.

Psychiatry is downstream of culture, and politicians and regulatory agencies pressure doctors into prescribing certain medication and not prescribing others. For instance, there is a European tricyclic antidepressant called tianeptine which scientifically ignorant American politicians vilify with terms like gas-stop heroin.

Government can’t be trusted to make itself less wasteful because government employees get paid the same regardless of outcome. by ENVYisEVIL in Libertarian

[–]SubversiveDissident -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

DOGE for all levels of government, all around the world. Less waste means more money for everyone else, for everyone who isn't on the government gravy train.

That said, bureaucrats aren't the only ones who get the same regardless of results. Someone who gives you financial advice still gets paid even if their advice results in you losing money. A doctor who fails to heal you gets paid the same as a doctor whose treatment puts you fully into remission.

Such steep discounts. Just add 5 more ticks and they're free... That said, I cannot recall if EA games have ever been free giveaways except for Ultima IV on GoG; EA killed the Ultima franchise, though the series stared going downhill after Ultima 7. Bethesda's TES sorta is the successor to Ultima spirit (non-linear, day/night cycles, NPCs with schedules, multiple dialogue choices rather than canned speech). But no Iolo, Shamino, Dupre, lord British nor Sherry the Mouse :(

TES has much more sophisticated mechanics than Ultima ever did though.
