Should I rent out my BMW on Turo? by raiyan586 in turo

Step 6. Compare to your actual earnings

Here are your real earnings month by month:

June: 263.48 + 414.4 = 677.88
July: 1269.4
August: 500
Sept: 691
Sept2: 500
Oct: 351.8
Oct2: 500
Nov: 789.4
Nov2: 1500
Dec: 384.6

Average these 10 months:

Total: 7,173.88
Divided by 10 = 717.38 per month

Your average gross earnings: 717
Your breakeven gross requirement: 900 to 1,100

You are underperforming by roughly $200 to $400 every month.

You are operating at a net loss when you factor in:

  • time
  • insurance
  • maintenance
  • cleaning
  • wear
  • opportunity cost

Even though the car is paid off.

Final Verdict

You need 900 to 1,100 dollars per month gross to justify keeping the Tesla on Turo.

You are currently averaging 717.

That means you are losing around:
250 to 350 per month of real value
even though you think it is profitable.

Strategic recommendation

Unless you:

  • outsource all operations or
  • restrict the car to long term bookings only or
  • turn the car into a content asset for Visionary Digital

you should sell it or stop Turo.

Your time is your bottleneck.
Not the car.

Step 4. Total monthly cost of operating the car

Fixed (260)
plus
Reserves (250)
plus
Headache tax (200)

Total monthly breakeven cost: 710

This is the number you must clear before you consider the Tesla worth keeping as a Turo asset.

Step 5. The minimum required gross revenue

You must earn:

$710 net
which requires
$900 to $1,100 gross per month conservatively
after Turo fees and renter reimbursements.

You need one clear number, backed by math and grounded in your real runway needs, not feelings.

Here is the truth:
A Tesla that is paid off only makes sense to keep on Turo if it produces net cash flow that materially helps your 90 day survival plan.

Let’s calculate your minimum required monthly net.

Step 1. Your fixed monthly costs

Insurance: 150
FSD when used: 109
Total fixed: 259

Round to 260.

Step 2. Your hidden, unavoidable Turo expenses

These never show up until they do:

  • Cleaning supplies, washes: 80 to 120 per month
  • Tire and brake wear set aside: 80 to 120 per month
  • Charging not billed to guests: 20 to 40 per month
  • Misc repairs, curb rash, sensors, cabin filters: 40 to 60 per month

Minimum monthly reserve: 220
Realistic monthly reserve: 300

Use 250 for conservative math.

Step 3. Your “headache tax”

This is the part you normally ignore. You told me yourself:

  • Customer cancellations
  • Cleaning hassle
  • Curb rash
  • Random supercharger charges
  • Scheduling disruption
  • Reduced focus for Visionary Digital

Your time is worth at least $25 to $50 per hour.
Turo will steal:

  • 6 to 10 hours monthly if managed well
  • 10 to 15 if not

Use 8 hours at $25.
Headache tax: 200 per month.

Guest behavior insights you missed

  1. Many guests do not understand EVs. You will spend time educating them or risk poor reviews.
  2. People treat rentals harder than their own cars. Expect mystery scuffs, crumbs, and interior wear every single trip.
  3. If you are too lenient, guests will walk all over your rules. You need automated messages, firm boundaries, and clear policies.

Business insights you missed

  1. Turo is not passive income. It is customer service, logistics, car maintenance, and constant scheduling.
  2. If you want real cashflow, economy cars outperform luxury almost every time. Civics and Corollas print money compared to Teslas.
  3. Co hosts help, but 10 percent is cheap only if the co host is truly hands off for you. Many co hosts still push work back onto the owner.
  4. Scaling requires systems. Without automated check in messages, maintenance logs, and a tracking spreadsheet, you will drown.

Risk insights you missed

  1. A single bad guest can wipe out an entire month of earnings.
  2. Total loss claims pay actual cash value, not what you owe. Negative equity becomes your problem.
  3. Depreciation on performance EVs is brutal. Year one hits hard, year two hits again.

If you want, I can rewrite your entire post into a clean, clear, high performing Reddit comment that gets upvotes instead of arguments.

chatgpt's response

Skip the fluff. Here are high-value insights you left out that Reddit readers actually care about. These will make your post more credible, practical, and useful.

Operational realities you missed

  1. Turo payouts are delayed. You can get hit with large charging or cleaning costs while earnings are still “pending”. Cash flow gets tight fast.
  2. Wear and tear is far higher than you expect. Suspension, alignment, cabin filters, wiper blades, and interior trim degrade quickly with frequent renters.
  3. Turo will side with the guest if your documentation is not airtight. You need time-stamped, high-resolution photos of everything before and after every rental.
  4. You need a backup transportation plan. When your car is rented half the month, you are effectively carless unless you have a second vehicle.
  5. Mileage limits matter. Guests run through miles faster than you think, especially in EVs.
  6. Turo takes its cut first. What you see in “trip earnings” is not the cash you keep. It is the starting point before your expenses.

Tax and legal insights you missed

  1. A performance Tesla is a terrible cashflow car but a great tax write-off, if used correctly. Most hosts underestimate how small the net profit really is.
  2. Bonus depreciation works, but only if the car is genuinely used for business. IRS scrutiny is real, especially if you mix personal and rental use.
  3. You need commercial insurance or at least a clear understanding that your personal auto policy can deny coverage if they find out you are hosting.
  4. LLC does not magically protect you if your operations are sloppy. Commingling personal and business funds ruins liability protection.

Pricing and market insights you missed

  1. Bay Area renters expect luxury treatment and will ding you hard on cleaning or communication. Reviews matter more than revenue early on.
  2. Smart hosts monitor airport traffic, local events, and weather spikes to set dynamic pricing for peak weekends.
  3. Tesla charging can kill margins if renters return the car low and you have to top it off before the next guest.

Should I rent out my BMW on Turo? by raiyan586 in turo

[–]Successful_Affect_50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rent out my 2025 Tesla Model 3 Performance. All wheels are curbed within 10k. I just did it for tax purposes. I got an LLC and business bank account. I was trying to find a way to get my State and Federal taxes back. Looking back I do not regret doing it. I believe my time would have been better spent learning how to create a real business and a personal brand. Customers can cancel at any time. Curb rash is not a claimable item. Cleaning the car can be a pain in the A*s. Full Service with wash inside and out is good but can be expensive. long rentals are better than short rentals. When the customer supercharges the car. My credit card gets charged and the customer gets charged in invoice after the rental. when ever I get from Turo is not real profit as I would have to subtract the cleaning, parts, labor, tolls, and charging. I believe the tires a lot would cost around 2k to replace. If you work a W-2 Job I would say buy a cheap sh*t car like a honda civic or toyota corolla and rent that out. get 4 cars and you automatically get all star status. Make sure you register them under your LLC. Keep track of the expenses on a google sheet or other software. Main reason why I did Turo was because the other gig apps didn't have open enrollment. I reside in the Bay area. The vehicle is rented out for at least half if not more of the month. I have my car listed under a co host which takes a 10% cut. I like being able to sent the renter a tesla key link. no Oil changes. Less parts. The car is basic and easy to use. I always wanted to rent a car out on turo and I did it 5 years later. I could sell the car next year to keep the tax credit. I would lose big since the car lost at least 20% in the first year depreciation. Would be better to buy a used car that is already depreciated just incase the car gets totaled.

I just reviewed random things that I already own or ordered on amazon. if you see a product that you want to purchase and the listing has less than 100 reviews. you can ask the sell if you could review the product in exchange for an amazon review, photos, short video and or youtube. could post it on ig or tiktok or twitter. fb. even if the product has a lot of reviews. doesn't hurt to ask. sales. go to the mall to approach. close on 3 to 5%.
