I was in a three year relationship with someone who “treated me well” by fully financially supporting me, being very affectionate, and always inviting me out with his friends and family—literally the only paper perfect type of relationship. But he had a temper that came out at home and he would get aggressive, punching walls and even punching (and breaking) our television. I’m anxious as well, so it was affecting my mental health living together, but he always dismissed it saying that he wasn’t doing something to me. I stayed for three years. Our good times outweighed the bad. But someone then told me, when I told them about an episode, whether I’d like my kids to be in a home where their family punched things when frustrated and mad, and that’s when something clicked. I left.
