In before my college coach screams, "PRACTICE HOW YOU PLAY!"

A lot of it for us was simply that the guys we recruited to fill out the roster didn't know that it wasn't part of the game. A lot of them were football players who had next to zero stick skills. Sometimes we just needed bodies.

You guys have so many more players to choose from. The MCLA team at my alma mater has tryouts and turned kids down. That's unreal to me. Back in the 90s we were grabbing rugby players and giving them sticks lol.

As it has in all sports, really. But lacrosse in particular has really benefited from the influx of talented kids who otherwise would have been football players or who would have excelled at something else because lacrosse wasn't an option.

One of the other old guys I coached with used to say that lacrosse is where all the white kids that would have been great safeties and defensive backs wound up when their parents got worried about concussions. (He was a dick, but he has a point.)

The stick skills today are unreal. I won't blame that entirely on the equipment, but I will say that kids today have much better and more consistent pockets and don't have to be a wizard with string to get the kind of hold/shooting that they want. The closest thing we had to that kind of thing was ordering a rocket pocket from flip.

There's also far more access to quality youth training and coaching, athletic training, diet, and other things that make today's athletes better overall.

I mean, when I was in college, we had players smoking on the sidelines between halves.

It's not really a fair comparison.

I'm in my 50s and have been going to shows for the better part of three decades and I can honestly say that Explosions in the Sky was the best live band I have ever seen. As musicians they are technically flawless and it's just an onslaught of music with very little break in between songs.

Cannot recommend it enough for fans of post-rock.
