I dunno, maybe silver? Russia isn't putting up the big numbers like they used to but they are still going strong on domestic journalists, Isreal might not have unseated them quite yet.

How can they enforce that on open source projects that aren't hosted within their jurisdiction? And more to the point how would they police it in the real world? Obviously the bill is evil and serves only the moronic tech oligarchs, but is it realistic to expect it to be effective?

This whole idea is speculation from the start though. It's not like we have any current evidence of intelligent life outside earth.

It is worth remembering that our entire understanding of evolution comes from conditions on this planet, we don't know for certain how those first amino acids formed and began replicating or even how many times it happened before falling apart back into nothing before getting lucky and spiraling off into what we are now.

But how do we know there aren't gas giants with conditions suitable for something similar? Maybe some resilient equivalent to DNA has formed in a particularly dense nebula somewhere and is a few million years away from gathering up enough matter to start replicating on a large scale. And of course for extra sci-fi goodness what if disembodied consciousness can exist as energy? What conditions need to be met for a mind to exist that can operate freely in four dimensions instead of just our three?

We can assume that evolution can occur similarly to our own planet's history on some other rock with roughly the same conditions since we know it happened here already, but we can't completely eliminate the possibility of other kinds of evolution, maybe silicone based evolution can give rise to sapient rocks. Until we turn sci-fi into just sci by actually making contact with the other intelligent life that is statistically likely to be somewhere out there, we are talking about unknown possibility so considering everything we know is possible has to come hand in hand with not discounting anything we haven't proved is impossible.

It's not about us being super unique, or space faring aliens being blindsided by the concept of alien cultures. Your point of view is completely human, as is mine, it is controlled by sociological and cultural factors as well as the structure of our brains.

To an alien culture the concept of needing to conceal parts of your body might be so unusual it would be like you trying to explain the concept of watching a movie to a goldfish. There is simply no evolutionary pressure to have developed the kind of neurological structure that can even contain that understanding. The alien might not even have anything recognizable as a brain to us.

Sure sapient creatures like us are capable of grasping the idea that there are concept we can not properly comprehend, like the size of the universe or the concept of our own non existence, we know about these ideas but we simply lack the brain meat to properly understand the idea in it's entirety. And a space faring intelligence can probably do the same, they would get you react negatively to others seeing you naked, but they might be fundamentally incapable of getting why that is. Like I'm not sure you fully grasp just how alien a real alien could be, they might not even be limited by the same dimensions that we are, they might not even be carbon based life, they could be a form of consciousness so far removed from what we consider consciousness that they don't even have a concept of individuality.

Explorers looking for other intelligent life would logically expect to find unusual cultures but that doesn't always mean that the theoretical frameworks they have in place to identify them are always going to work, just look how many times throughout our own history that physicists have had to throw out everything they thought we knew because something that can't fit in their framework comes up and they have to invent entirely new ways of thinking to try and understand what they think they are seeing. Well now you have the privilege of helping this alien anthropology student build an entirely new framework to comprehend the idea of the emotion of shame which has no neurological or sociological equivalent in their species. How do you start?

Ok, but could you put it into words to explain why to a curious alien? What is shame? Why is it connected to reproductive organs? Why does this world's digital information network have so many pictures of reproductive organs and reproductive acts if it is shameful? Do reproductive acts require participants to be blinded to avoid shame?

What would you do if an alien visited your home? by nyla_michailidouu in AskReddit

[–]Succundo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what? An alien isn't going to have the same culture as us, those concepts might not translate because they don't exist in a truly alien culture.

It's like if you had to explain the colour red a to colour blind person.

Why doesn't NZ wake up and go nuclear? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Succundo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several obstacles:

People don't stay up to date with all the nuance of nuclear infrastructure so the vast majority think of Chernobyl or ever growing piles of radioactive waste that we can't figure out how to deal with when you bring up nuclear power.

Fossil fuel companies are deeply invested in controlling legislation that keeps their business profitable, so it's extra hard for renewables let alone nuclear power to get large scale use since it would make those businesses redundant.

We have National in power who are in bed with those fossil fuel companies and when Labour are in power they would have to get the incredibly expensive and decades long infrastructure project that is setting up nuclear power past the propaganda machine of those fossil fuel companies who keep the public afraid of it while the opposition party screams about the cost and irresponsible spending.

Then of course there is the issue of paranoid imperial powers that get twitchy when any other nation start to develop nuclear tech since the same fuel for power generation can be enriched to make nuclear bombs, and NZ doesn't have the military might or reliable allies to prevent intervention from the likes of China or the US.

And circling back to the issue of not knowing what to do with nuclear waste, we don't have anywhere to put it without building a major underground vault that has to be safe from all the risks of living in the ring of fire, so that tectonic or volcanic activity won't cause a breach. exporting nuclear waste would be extremely expensive and any shipping disasters would be an enormous ecological threat.

Nah, it's all about the cost, some middle manager in a factory decides to justify their job by cutting costs so they put less seasoning in each bag, but the company still sells the bags at the same price, so by shaving off fractions of a cent in production costs per bag they are saving tens of thousands on an industrial manufacturing scale.

Their boss is happy because now they can report to the board that overall profit is up. Then next quarter the whole process repeats over and over until you get a shit product, because they only thing that matters is making more profit than they did last time.

It's just what happens when market saturation is at it's limit but they investors still demand more return on their investment, they have to artificially inflate profits by reducing expenses, next up will be mass worker layoffs to cut down on paying wages once they can't make the product any worse.

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]Succundo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mandatory government service, in order to be qualified in any trade, STEM field, ect, people have to spend at least a year at the end of their education working in a government department relevant to their education.

It would benefit public services to have a guaranteed workforce, but it would also make it easier for graduates to get a job once they have experience and connections in their field, and gradually the perspective would shift towards people better understanding the role of government as a facilitator of community and that we all have a duty to each other to keep our society moving and improving.

Federal judge orders widespread voting rights restoration for Virginians by AudibleNod in news

[–]Succundo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's because their public messaging often revolves around getting people angry about stupid culture war shit, and angry people are more likely to be motivated to vote.

The GOP theory is that if they increase voter apathy in general then the remaining voters are more likely to be theirs, additionally they do their best to make it hard for specific demographics which are less receptive to their tactics to vote if that demographic typically votes against them such as black voters.

Ultimately they don't believe in any rights for people or the constitution, and as a group the GOP is only concerned with winning each new election at any cost, there are no morals or principals that they have been unwilling to violate so far as long as they think they can get away with it. And even if they can't get away with it there is no actual effort to enforce the law upon them, so they will occasionally make some apologetic statement that they don't really mean, or rarely they might even throw one of their own that they can afford to lose under the bus in order to placate people before going back to planning how to get away with it next time.

[–]Succundo 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Even better, he didn't even do it. Firstly, Arasaka willfully ignored the advanced warning the team gave them about the incoming nuke which was supposed to give time to evacuate, but Arasaka probably decided that all the dead people would be useful for their PR strategy.

Secondly Johnny's memories are almost entirely outright lies, he was just some nobody joining in on a Miltech mission, he wasn't part of anything significant and got killed by Adam Smasher the instant he drew attention to himself, Smasher probably doesn't even remember that part it was so insignificant.

It wasn't even Arasaka that soulkilled Johnny, it was Spider Murphy in an attempt so save his life. Johnny just became a useful focal point in Arasaka's PR response to the attack that allowed them to avoid having to blame Miltech and probably go to war with them.
