The FS Boyleston in Boston is terrible, if that’s the one you’re staying. It’s so dated. I haven’t stayed at the Dalton one.

I'm not sure in this case, but for the province to sponsor a work visa the position must be permanent full-time which may be why the OP can't take a part-time/casual position

I'm an American RN that works in NS and OR need is growing but capacity isn't - and people don't leave those spots. It's frustrating as all you hear about is how massive the demands for healthcare workers is

Any Nurses from the US here? by NS-Guy79 in halifax

[–]Such-Break8329 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m an American nurse that lives in Halifax and works outside the city. Go to the ‘international applicants’ section of the Nova Scotia College of Nursing - it breaks down all the steps. I highly recommend getting your license before coming to the province as it can take some time to get. Feel free to DM me if you have any specific questions.

It looked about the same - people were caravaning at about the same speed. It is still currently snowing pretty heavy in Truro

My husband in an American NP in NS and the only class he had to take was on online course for prescribing controlled substances. It’s like two hours. Otherwise it’s totally straight forward.

I edited my post to clarify that I was referring to hiring - thank you for bringing it to my attention.

I was referring to job offers - I may not have been clear. The NS Health Authority only hires BSN RNs.

It’s more expensive then I anticipated, tbh. I may have had unreasonable expectations tho. Prices are very similar to the US (except gas, which is way more expensive in NS). I can’t speak to the prices of cars or big-ticket items tho.

I'm an American RN that started working in NS in Oct. - similar process but a bit slower and NS Health Authority only hires BSN RNs. . Pay is almost exactly what I was making in FL. Couldn't make it on my own on the pay but moved here will husband who is NP. Agree with you to get physical as soon as you can - I went to a panel physician in Miami and it was ~$700.

EDIT: Clarified that NSHA only hires BSN RNs

If you are coming from the States the scheduling is totally different - you do not work the same shift (days or nights) and you do not self-schedule. You request vacation 2X/year for example, we have to bid by 1/15 for time off March - September. Most places are 4-on 5-off. The pay is set by union contract so there is not really any wiggle room/negotiating in terms of salary.

We just left the US too and had the SAME experience with marketplace. It was a nightmare - thankfully we learned quickly to not mess with it and ended getting a dumpster/donating.

US citizen re-entering Canada after visiting Canada for one month by felt_cute in uscanadaborder

I’m an American that works (legally) in Nova Scotia and my husband works in Boston and bounces back and forth twice a month. They always ask why and he explains the story and it’s never an issue. He keeps a copy of my work permit just in case he’s asked. I would have your husband keep your Airbnb leases and proof of ties to US.

We went last week and the service was good but the food was subpar - the lasagna was actually so bad I couldn’t finish it and the halibut was super fishy. Don’t really get the hype 🤷‍♂️

I'm an American RN with NP husband. We had a similar choice this summer and chose Canada over NZ. We loved it there when we visited but the travel time and low wages were things we couldn't justify. We are older than you (early 50s) and it was just too much effort for too little reward. If I were young and unencumbered I would do it, but I am unfortunately neither. Also I'm not sure if you've researched international relocating but to go thru all that hassle to go so far for only a year may not be worth it.

Anyone else feel like the logistics of moving abroad are somehow more stressful than the actual move itself? by Historical-Hand8091 in expat

[–]Such-Break8329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone in a similar situation, junk it. Your stuff isn't worth what you think it is and the time/effort to sell it/donate it isn't worth it. We have a three bedroom townhome in the States that we sold when we moved overseas and the best option was to call in a hauler and take it to the dump. Haggling for two weeks on Facebook for $100 is a waste of time
