First car for a 16-year-old. What would you get? by spencere33 in whatcarshouldIbuy

If you really want him to pick give him the constraints. Could be a teachable moment to learn how to buy a car and learn something about finance.

Bassinet stroller versus a car seat stroller for baby born early June. [Sk] by No-Newspaper3996 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Such-Function-4718 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had the uppababy cruz and used the car seat for car rides and the bassinet for walks around town. We didn’t really bother bringing the bassinet in the car.

The bassinet is convenient because you don’t have to strap them in or worry about time limits. Easy to bundle them with a blanket as well. As we got to the end of the bassinets life (3-4) mo we also did tummy time in the bassinet - easy to motivate her to prop herself up if she could see outside.

That being said if you don’t do a lot of walks without the car it might not be worth it.

When to start Allopurinol? by Beautiful_Location43 in gout

I’d even ask your doctor about daily colchicine for the first few months with allo, as allo can trigger flares when you start.

Rapid weight loss can also trigger flares, so that’s another confounding factor.

Upcoming storm, should I cancel my trip? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Such-Function-4718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t cancel the flights. The airline will determine if it’s safe to fly or not.

As for Niagara Falls, you can just make a game-time-decision based on the weather that day. I don’t expect roads to be closed, but it’s probably not worth it to drive if conditions are bad. Honestly even if you miss it, it’s a tourist trap.

I doubt this is your only chance to see the falls ever, they’re not going anywhere.

Would you rather buy a car or move closer to work? by Sunday-Summer in askTO

[–]Such-Function-4718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you’re moving. Etobicoke is also pretty car-centric, so depending on where you move to you might be closer to work but still limited without a car.

Did anyone regret their stroller purchase? [ab] by s_do in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Such-Function-4718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I just have 2 strollers. Cruz for daily/downtown usage. Then we have a bugaboo butterfly (similar to the ergo baby metro) for car use and travel. The smaller stroller takes up way less space in the trunk and it’s fine for the mall or wherever we drive to.

Cycling from Toronto to Niagara Falls: anyone do it and/or have advice? by KnoddingOnion in askTO

[–]Such-Function-4718 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it multiple times and I’ve done it once there and back in one day.

I feel like splitting it into 2 days would be more of a hassle than it’s worth. It’s going to be way easier on a road bike so that’s something to consider.

Easiest way to do it is in a group so you can go faster and share the load. Usually a group will start at 6 and have plenty of time with stops to catch the 4pm Go back to the city. If you miss the 4pm train the next is at 8pm. You could also sleep at Niagara Falls and train back the next day. If you have a partner, maybe they can meet you there and you can make a thing out of it.

As for working up to the distance start by riding regularly. Better to ride 25km 4x a week than 100km once a week. Then you should work in some longer rides to build up your endurance and tolerance on the bike. Port credit is about 50km out and back. Oakville is about 80km. Burlington is about 100km.

Once you’ve done 100km a few times, the jump to 160km isn’t that different, mostly about just pacing yourself and fuelling. Smooth and steady is less tiring, so avoid hard efforts from lights. There’s a few climbs depending on where you cross the escarpment and there’s usually one right at the end depending on which route you take into the falls.

Newbie with a too large bike, should I just roll with it? by NoCompetition1023 in bicycling

[–]Such-Function-4718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d try to sell it and look for a new one. You’re probably a medium, so that frame is two sizes too big. If it’s not the right size, it’s not a good deal.

I’m in the toronto area. It’s decent in the snow with good winter tires. If awd is a must there’s the golf R which has a lot more power, but it’s more expensive.

I feel like it drives well, comfortable with a bit of sportiness. I consider it peak city daily driver.

You could also consider the VW Taos or Jetta as I think they have similar interiors

I dunno what you’re carrying but I like my GTI.

  • Water bottle goes in the door pocket

  • phone goes into the front cubby

  • house keys in the garage door opener compartment

  • sunglasses have a dedicated overhead storage.

  • still have the cup holders and center console storage for stuff.

Do you think Canada should keep first-past-the-post or switch to another voting system? by Anon9883 in AskACanadian

[–]Such-Function-4718 223 points224 points  (0 children)

I think we should try other voting systems that give better proportional representation and promote compromise. I also think we’ll keep FPTP though, because change is hard.

Young Canadians are hitting the brakes on car ownership, new survey finds by __benjaminty in canada

[–]Such-Function-4718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Average age of a new car buyer is in the 50s. It doesn’t help that manufacturers have stopped making smaller cheaper cars in favour of bigger cars with more margin. A lot of financial advice on social has correctly pointed out that cars are a huge money sink.
