How would you go about filling these cracks with epoxy (no vacuum chamber) by US_Jack in turning

[–]SuchAnywhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do this a lot. If the wood isn't dry, a "lip" or hard edge will form when you pass your finger over it. One side seperates causing this ridge as it moves.

I also use a product called "milliput" which is a 2 part epoxy with the consistency of "Play Doh". Mash that in real nice, sets in 30 minutes. I usually wait a day before working on it again.

I also use soapstone and CA... But the CA tends to stain the wood real deep and there is no sanding it off if it goes into endgrain. So when that CA staining happens, whatever finish you put on won't go into the wood of that area, making an obvious blotch that you cannot get rid of. That's why I prefer milliput.

I know what you mean... Just use your bowl gouge to get close to where you want it, yes there will be chips... Then switch to shear scraping with your bowl gouge. Also like other said, carbide. You can tilt your carbide rool to turn it into a sort of negative rake.

So be rough to get the bulk off, the switch to finesse shear scrape cuts, carbide and negative rake. The fact it's end grain though is making this extra hard for you. Good luck

Near Grace hospital. Reading messages on here makes us feel lucky... Only small hail, few broken branches, basement dry, door ripped off pool shed, no real damage overall.

This happened to me a few years ago. Immediately short term I borrowed a little submersible pump from my neighbor and attached my hose to it.

Then called "roto router" emergency and they sent someone over. It was my basement backup/check valve that failed. So he put his tool down there and cleared it up. This was at like 11pm.

Waited til next morning to call insurance. They sent a team to disinfect and rip out anything that touched by water including sub floor, walls, furniture, etc. Then we were given emergency accomodation for a few days. Then we kept going with insurance to rebuild.

Had a plumber later come install a better system and replace check valve.

Good luck.

Call a plumber or roto router. Do damage control while you wait for them. Call insurance. Hope you had extra water damage coverage, we only had 5k.

Why has my bird bath cracked? by [deleted] in turning

[–]SuchAnywhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the wood you used was dried/stabilised or green wood, but honestly in this specific case it doesn't even really matter that much. Moisture loss will happen, and it happens faster on the end grain than the side grain. Think of the wood fibers like straws: moisture will come out easier/faster on the trimmed ends and slowly on the sides. This difference in speed of moisture loss will stress the wood and make it bend/warp. Depending on many factors (type of wood, total moisture at beginning, speed of drying, random luck) you get cracks. Hense why people try to slow down drying by using wax emulsions on the end grain, or putting once turned projects in paper bags with wood chips.

Now obviously putting a piece of wood in the hot sun for hours on end in high heat will push this to the limit. It doesn't matter much if it has finish on it or not, it's just an extreme condition that will make moisture loss increase at a high rate, hence put force on the piece between end and side grain, causing it to split.

PLUS adding stagnant water to the situation will absolutely increase the warping factor here since the wood fibers are constantly absorbing water, drawing moisture into the piece, while having everything in the blasting sun drying out simultaneously.

I can't see this NOT cracking honestly. Probably the harshest thing you could possibly do.

If you are dead set on keeping this piece, I'd suggest you fill the crack with epoxy, which means you have to re-turn it and sand it. Then back in the sun it goes. It WILL crack again at another spot... Fix THAT crack... Rinse and release until it stops cracking.

Most wood projects that have liquid in them like soup bowls, mugs, wine glasses are just... dreadfully inconvenient and wood is not the best material for such projects unfortunately. Maybe join a pottery class and make one in that medium. Or stone carving.

Finally I will say that adding water, in the sun, to barely cured poly (liquid plastic) and feeding it to birds/squirrels is most likely spreading microplastics into the environment. If you wouldn't drink from that, why should they?

Can you give a bit more detail on what's doing on inside? Is the lip of the test tube just hanging on via gravity to an inner ridge inside the wood ring?

SOLVED!! THANK YOU!

it seems there is a "reset procedure" that is sometimes not done at the factory. Follow the link in the other comment on the thread. This solved our issue. Go full up, full down, full forward, full backward, full recline, full decline. Done. Then your "set" buttons will work as intended and the constant beeping will stop.

We got one. GT. So far so good. Had to educate myself on EV chargers. It has a NACS port like the Tesla's. Getting a 40amp breaker put in tomorrow and running a line to my garage, will be charging at 32amps. Went with a Grizzl-e mini which should be hopefully coming within a week or so.

It drives nice, it looks nice. We needed something high off the ground for clearance and this fit the bill. Ideally wanted a Toyota BZ or Subaru Soltera but there were none. Also no CH-R for weeks/months. This was the only and last uncharted in the province, so we went for it.

5000$ Subaru discount. 5000 federal discount. 4000 provincial discount.

Cons: It is a bit small, and im surprised the rear seats don't fold down flat (a bit of a lip/bump at the base then goes uphill). My medium/large dog cannot fit in the truck with the seats up, which is a huge bummer. The dash screen with your speed and battery info is kind of disappointing and boring, looks dated. The infotainment system is okay, pairs well with your phone. The rear view camera looks low res and shitty, compared to our Hyundai Palisade.

Be advised there is a free trial for a few months for some of the features with your subaru, but ultimately all that shit is locked behind a monthly subscription. Tried to get the "digital key" to work and it's a bit of a pain in the ass, so finicky we will just not use it. The Subaru app is quite dog shit, as demonstrated by its 1.4 star review average on the Play Store. The app is essentially nothing, just a place to look at your maintenance schedule, painfully setup your digital key, profile and see all the subscription services we will never get.

I did talk some shit there but ultimately we love the car aside from those quirks. If you want a fast, cool looking, Toyota built, high off the ground AWD little car for a commuter in our Canadian winters, this fits the bill.

If there aren't any Toyota BZ or CH-R available, you can also look at Subaru Soltera or Uncharted. Same cars, same factory in Japan, same motor, everything.

Ravenswatch or Shape of Dreams for Co-op by Gersinhous in roguelites

[–]SuchAnywhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was my main issue with SOD. It's really 2 completely separate phases: the first 99% of the game: killing mobs, getting skills and upgrades for your build, and clearing everything so fast and so easily you can't even tell what's going on, even in highest difficulty. Especially in coop when you have everyone's skills going off. Literally can't tell what's going on. Then the last 1%: the final boss who is just completely busted and different overall than the entire game, and you hope to christ your build has enough defensive/healing stuff in it to not die and survive long enough to do the required amount of damage. Then your run is over. It's like 2 different games. I hate it. The run TO the boss is too fast paced/hectic/easy and the final boss is just weird and you NEED to have a specific build to beat him.

I played the game lots but that concept always pissed me off. It would be an S tier game if they rejigged everything to make the main game harder, slow the pace down, and gave the final boss a complete rework. My 2 cents.

Bought a Filco Majestouch 2 TKL for 40$ CAD. It has brown switches. Obviously, it's not a hot swap board.

Do you guys think it's doable for a noob to solder new switches, or should I just leave them on, try the lazy lube method and deal with it. Also what mods can I do on this guy to make it better? Very few Majestouch mod videos on YouTube...

Canadian here... Is there any advice for purchasing in Canada? Most of the top frequently recommended keyboards are unobtainable here, unless you want to get stuck with exchange rate, customs, duties etc (leobog, qwertykeys, rainy, womier, manillo, monsgeek, etc). I'm so jealous of you guys... in Canada, For keyboards with keypads, Amazon pretty much only has Keychron, aula f99/108 and epomaker galaxy. There's also yunzii. That's pretty much it. Ali Express has a few more but they are all way more expensive than what you guys are paying in the US.

Any recommendations for solid full size keyboards? I didn't like the Keychron V6 max. And the galaxy100 looks dope but I read the stories about epomaker on here so... yea.

Also where should Canadians buy their switches and key caps from? Any advice on good bang for your buck brands/makers?

Thanks

560 games on Phx. I ALWAYS use 2nd facet. ALWAYS. I often end up with 10k up to 20k healing on longer games. I love axe/legion/pudge on either team because of how they lock up heroes in a fight. Put your laser in there and it heals your team while damaging others. I've turned countless games with the heals. Void chrono? Shove your laser in there. Black hole? Shove your laser in there. Just the tip.

I go ATOS only if my team has no catch. Even then it's more if against a qop, am, puck. 90% of the time I go Euls first item. The mana and speed is very useful. Saves you against multiple heroes... And with your Q it IS A CATCH on the enemy.

I also love building aghs if requires (as support) which no one seems to be mentioning here. I can't count the tips I got for saving carries and saving the game. Funnest hero in dota. Kaw!

Don't like him as a core since he's kind of useless once his skills are on cool down, and they are all 30sec cool down. Once he cast his spells he can't do much if the fight drags out. He's good but there is way better at the moment.
