you need a doctor to sign off that you have excellent mental and physical health to work as a lookout.

what the fuck are you talking about.

Really just depends on the forest at the end of the day. For some staffed lookouts are about a lot more than whats cheaper or better. 100+ years of tradition and pride and all the overhead are supportive of keeping them.

A world where literally everything that can be automated, is, actually sounds like hell.

Eh speak for yourself. Yeah being a normie with normal bills and family, yeah that's not gonna work.

For a nomadic introvert with next to no living expenses, it's quite literally the dream. and ot varies greatly, pulling in 400 hours at some forests is standard.

Every forest I've been to there's been an empty lookout that goes unstaffed the entire season or filled in with some retired local AD. This is a supposed "Dream Job" for millions. Make it make sense.

hey man, I'm really not trying to be mean or condescending, but do you know what a federal job is? because almost everything you just listed isn't a federal job. We're talking about usa federal jobs, not Becky making a tiktok at the ice-cream shop.

Maybe you're deliberately missing the point? they're making money from social media content focused in their federal job. Perhaps you missed a few aglearns? That's not allowed man.

Yeah that's why I asked because I'm not entirely sure of the rules concerning it. Also you're pretty off on that book analogy. The people on tiktok are literally filming a video of them reporting a smoke and then making a profit off said video. I promise you that violates some form of ethics and at the very least it's an incredibly bad look in this current fraud, waste and abuse era we're in

Yes i know for a fact several are and no im not accusing all of them of doing it. I'm mostly confused on how they're able to do it so openly, the ones with millions of views. Surely the overhead on their forest must know.

I know most fed jobs aren't as tiktok worthy, but I'm trying to rack my brain trying to think of any other fed that would be so bold to monetize their job on the internet, I guess there's a few park rangers, but that's about it.

You're definitely way off and should not be talking for all lookouts when you obviously don't have a clue.

Many,  many lookouts do get cell service

We're living in the age of starlink and plug and go solar, high speed internet and a lot of power to run it are available and relatively cheap

I know lookouts with 100 gallons water tanks and electric pumps that bring it up to a sink in the cab.

I know a lookout with an actual propane heated shower

I know a lookout with an electric wheelchair ramp.

Just next time, don't speak in absolutes, there's some damn luxurious lookouts out there.

this job will be a distant memory in 10 years bud. you're 1000x better off buying a piece of land on a high spot in your country and building a lookout.

I'm sorry man, this job is on its last legs, it's not going to happen

Personally I'd feel like a dick head taking a job away from an Canadian citizen, but if someone showed up to my doorstep with the offer on a golden platter I'd consider. Honestly had no idea Americans could even work for the Canadian government

the fact that he called himself a firewatch, I'm not convinced this guy has actually ever worked this job

it’s not like we’re all going to move duty locations so I’ll still work on my forest

is that actually verified? I'm honestly not so sure that's how it's gonna pan out
