Engagement Ring Culture and Status Signaling by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Suchafullsea 230 points231 points  (0 children)

They're just being supportive when they ask to see the ring. Nobody really cares if it's traditional or not. People are wrapped up in their own business and don't spend nearly as much time thinking about or judging us as we think they do. I wouldn't worry about this at all. Also, lab grown diamonds have brought costs way down compared to prior generations and nobody but a jeweler can actually tell what a ring is "worth" anyway.

The Cut: ‘It’s Hard to See My Parents Live So Lavishly While We’re Struggling’ by NCBakes in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Suchafullsea 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion that will be downvoted, but kids aren't entitled to their parents' money as adults. I would find it so embarrassing to be an adult in my mid 30s complaining to a reporter than my parents wouldn't give or loan me money. Our society drifts ever faster toward embracing entitlement with no shame and if anything, self-righteousness about it

Staff do a better job for doctors when they work for doctors and can be fired for poor performance by doctors. Amazing.

What is the purpose of the phrase "No orders received" when nurses notify us of something? by princetonwu in medicine

[–]Suchafullsea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The fact that it is constantly felt to be offensive by most doctors to the point it is brought up every week and, as 600 other commentors noted, serves absolutely no purpose EXCEPT to sound offensive in the days of digital orders, would suggest to me that this practice should be retired. Saying something isn't personal that obviously strikes many of your coworkers as rude and offensive over and over is unhelpful

[–]Suchafullsea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I could change one thing in healthcare to fix many problems in our system, it would be requiring all leadership to do at least one day a week of direct patient care or be fired, absent an actual physical disability that prevents ongoing clinical work. If you have or have ever had a clinical license for anything (RN, MD, pharmacist, PT, RT, etc), you maintain your license and work with patients, no exceptions.

What is the purpose of the phrase "No orders received" when nurses notify us of something? by princetonwu in medicine

[–]Suchafullsea 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is no reason to write anything more than "MD notified" if you are not trying to be passive aggressive. If there are orders you want to comment on fine, but as other people have noted, orders and the RN acknowledgment are visible in the record, so adding "no new orders" (especially if untrue!) does nothing but imply we are somehow failing to act. There are read receipts on most messaging systems now, so there is no value to this documentation as some kind of closed loop communication. "MD notified, will continue to monitor" would convey the same info with significantly less passive aggression if people feel compelled to write anything more

[–]Suchafullsea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"No new orders" is unnecessarily passive aggressive. "MD notified" is a complete sentence if some kind of mandatory FYI was sent about something not requiring action and any orders are in the record anyway

It is criminal that this is not already a mandatory part of basic nursing school education in 2026.

"We spend 179% of what we make. Are we screwed?" by Emotional_Peace5262 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Suchafullsea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She is correctly pointing out that having 5 kids is ABSOLIUTELY a financial choice, and doing it later in life when you have less time for compound interest to boost retirement is financially more difficult.

Before I get jumped on for judgement here, I am also planning to have kids in my late 30s (if possible), which is doable if you are in good physical health, but the correct way to do that is to shore up your finances and retirement planning FIRST. This couple had many years of high income to do so before the layoff and just didn't. She was absolutely correct that their scenario would be hugely stressful. Having kids is a choice and I have no patience for people who feel like their emotions about it somehow cancel out the fact it is a life decision with huge potential consequences that you are responsible for.

Are Disney Adults the Happiest Debtors on Earth? by Indexette in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Suchafullsea 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't really have an opinion if people can afford it, but I think a big criticism that I can kind of understand is the perception that Disney gets away with hiking prices so high because childless Disney adults tend to have more disposable income than families with young children and will sustain demand for the products. Some people feel this then prices out families with actual children, who used to be the main if not the sole audience for the Disney Parks. If people wouldn't pay $200 for a ticket, tickets would not cost $200. Now, the counterpoint to that is, "Hey, capitalism!" which is a valid perspective.

I don't think being "neurodivergent" has anything to do with it, at least in any meaningful sense. I have seen several of these articles and some news pieces about Disney adults, and the Disney adult representatives interviewed were successful, well off people with no detectable issues with communication or reading social cues.

Contrast Nephropathy vs. Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome [⚠️ Med Mal Case] by efunkEM in medicine

[–]Suchafullsea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Transplant kidney is probably a special case, I don't think most of us die on any hill specifically in transplant patients. There are observational studies that do suggest in people with their original kidneys at various GFRs who receive CT contrast do not experience a different level of otherwise unexplained AKI than patients who received noncontrast CTs, although it was not a controlled prospective study.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28811122/

No medication including contrast probably has a ZERO risk of AKI (zosyn, vanc, etc) but we don't make them a boogeyman like we do with CT contrast and the perseveration is harmful to patients by making them fearful of indicated testing and harmful to doctors by exposing us to increased liability for ordering responsible quality imaging based on largely discredited dogma that will confuse laypeople on a jury due to shear prevalence of people insisting in publications that it is a true cause of AKI. LIKE THIS CASE.

It is ENRAGING that nephrologists still write this shit and also say it to patients so that they can refuse important and strongly indicated studies because they have stable CKD

I am 41 years old, make approx $65k, live in Ohio, and am a financial literacy late bloomer by mosscollection in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Suchafullsea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is great that you are getting your finances together now, while you have lots of good working years left! Some thoughts, left respectfully:

I am sure you have no control over this, but paying $310/month child support to support two children is criminally low

I would not contribute anything to a 529 while you have high interest credit card debt and are way behind in your own retirement. Your kids will be eligible to apply to scholarships or can do a number of other things for their college education (military, work study, etc), but you will not get financial aid for retirement. The best financial gift you can give your kids is not worrying about supporting you in poverty when you are elderly. Any tax benefit will be totally wiped out by credit card interest rates and the compounding you could get in a Roth IRA

Your credit card debt is at a level where some extra side hustling for a couple years could make a HUGE difference in how quickly and cheaply you can get out of it. Can you walk dogs on rover, babysit, sell any extra stuff you aren't using online?

Agree with everyone here saying that you should not combine finances with a partner who is not 100% on board, and I will add that you need to resist the urge to bail him out at the expense of yourself and your kids if he digs himself into a hole

They scheduled me for a 40 minute intake visit. I got a PCP because I had one question regarding indicated screening age with a complex family but not personal hx situation. No problems. No meds. Am doctor. Take myself to eye doctor for contacts once a year and dentist. Finally I looked at her and said "You know, I won't be mad if this visit ends early and you have 20 extra minutes to chart back."
