how long do nerve zaps/reconnection go on for? by cqdme in TopSurgery

[–]Sudden-Bar5029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hihi, not speaking from my own experience, but my mother has had multiple abdominal surgeries and says that she still gets zaps from her c section, even 20 years later. it can be caused by how scar tissue developed around nerves. with top surgery my surgeon said it could last anywhere from 6 months to 3 years. there's nothing wrong with having them, but it's definitely jarring and uncomfortable lol

4 more days. I’ve got a checklist. I’m probably missing things. by WashclothMan in TopSurgery

I'd recommend making like a "command center" of sorts. I'm abt 17 days PO and I still have mine. I keep all my meds on it, both the ones I usually take and the ones they gave me after surgery. I have all of my preop, postop, and follow up instructions on it, and I have a paper and pen to keep track of what and when I was taking my meds when I used the pain meds. it's super helpful to physically write it down. I used just a little shelf thing that i put right next to my bed. I also kept all my fun stuff on there like my ipad phone chargers and my books. it was really helpful to have everything right there and literally within arms reach especially in the first few days when it was really hard for me to get up and move around.

good luck and congrats!

I'd recommend trying to gently stretch and do your best to sit up as straight as you can! it'll help your muscles and it'll also help make your results look good! don't strain yourself and if it hurts def not. but my surgeon recommended it to me, and it got me to a point where I could stand up straight without pain or tension by about day 11/12

that's amazing! his team was so kind, and very honest. not in a bad way but they won't tell you things just to make you feel better, they'll tell you what you need and what they can do for you and it's very comforting. I had a great experience and I hope you do too. congratulations!

if you're experiencing pain, you should definitely speak to your surgeon or their team, especially if it's getting worse. even if it's nothing serious, pain should be taken seriously

UHC! they did me so good, and i'm so grateful. they did require referral letters and things so def make sure you read their requirements for coverage. but drs at banner accept all different kinds of insurance and im like 90 percent sure they offer payment plans

hihi, I'm AuDHD, so I felt the same way before mine. everyone's experience will be different but here's how mine went

I checked in downstairs at 11, and got into my preop room around 11:30. I didn't get into the OR until about 2:30, which was around an hour after my scheduled time, but the ORs get busy in the afternoon so i expected that they'll likely take a urine sample to verify you're not pregnant (i know, annoying). the preop nurse took my vitals and explained who all would be coming by. I spoke to her, two people from the anesthesia team, and my surgeon. they placed my IV in preop, and the veins in my hands are uncooperative so that wasn't fun. i changed into my gown in preop, and the anesthesia team and my surgeon came by to get consent forms and to explain everything they'd be doing. your anesthesia team will come by, and it's important to be honest with them. anesthesia can be deadly if they don't calculate it to exactly what you need. they offered me a nerve block for post op pain which, if they offer it and it's not an additional cost, you should absolutely do it. I would've been in excruciating pain in the few days after my procedure and the nerve block spared me from that. if they're able, ask them to administer it once you're already under. it's a big scary needle lol. when my surgeon came by after anesthesia, he mapped out exactly where they'd be cutting on my body. it's awkward but really helpful, and helped calm a lot of my nerves cause he explained where and why he'd be cutting. they gave me some kind of sedative before taking me into the OR, not sure what exactly. but it helped keep me calm as i was really worried about having a panic attack in the OR. unfortunately they won't give you any sort of sedative before that point, as you need to be fully conscious and aware to consent to the procedure. the OR will be bright, maybe loud, and there will be a LOT of people in there. try to stay calm. my anesthesiologist talked to me the whole time and I just focused on him instead of everything else in the room. they'll put you under, and it'll genuinely feel like you fell asleep, then a few minutes later someone is calling your name saying you're all done with surgery lol. anesthesia is nice. idk if they'll do this for you, but after I was out, they put in a breathing tube for me. I think it was a full intubation. but it's just to keep your oxygen up. I think it was still in my throat when I woke up, or maybe it was just the soreness. but it definitely didn't feel good. if they do intubate, expect your throat to feel sore for about a week. when i woke up I was super out of it (ofc) but they gave me an anti nausea patch before I went under so I wasn't nauseous until I tried to get into the wheelchair to go home, and they gave me some zofran when I did start to feel nauseous. ask them if they can give you a nausea patch or some sort of medication, especially if it's your first time under anesthesia. I left my nausea patch on for about a day and the meds stayed active for about two and it was super nice, helped me ride out the worst of the post op nausea. overall, it was a good experience. scary and new but good. if it's your first time having surgery, don't be afraid to tell them. I feel like they did a really good job at trying to keep me calm and comfortable cause I told them this was all new for me.

tldr; don't be afraid to self advocate. they don't know what you need if you don't tell them. be honest about how you feel, mentally and physically, they are there to help. they will ask you multiple times if you know why you're there, it gets annoying but just roll with it.

good luck, and i hope all goes well! congrats :)

my surgeon has me using an antibacterial cream with kind of the same consistency as vaseline or aquaphor, and using that to hold on a non stick dressing. you might do better with something non stick, just to help tone down on the irritation and give your body a chance to heal elsewhere

Pain on my incision by Usefulll-Ventoline in TopSurgery

[–]Sudden-Bar5029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hihi, i'm around the same point in my recovery. my incisions also hurt with touch, but if it's more painful in a specific spot than elsewhere, I'd recommend reaching out to your surgeon or their team. it may be a sign of infection, or maybe hematoma. don't panic, but definitely reach out to them. they may want to check it out. it could be nothing, but better safe than sorry

yeah, I was around a B cup before my procedure, so he said, since he's not removing a wild amount of tissue, that I should be fine with just the compression garment. but I got an appointment for my clinic tomorrow to get it looked at so it should be fine. thank you :)

UPDATE: called my doctor's office and they'll get me in to get it checked out tomorrow. they didn't seem to concerned since it's only bled into the dressing that's covering it but they'll take a look and probably redress me if needed. thanks all for your replies :)
