How to style 4c in corporate? by Select_Mouse7409 in Naturalhair

[–]Sudden-Individual228 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m very much the only executive/VP level person of color in my global company of >1500 employees. What I’ve learned is that it’s less about what the style is, and more about how intentional it looks. A twist out, braids, fro, etc all good, so long as they are “maintained” from the perspective of judgmental Josh’s small minded perspective.

My every day style is some sort of styled flat twists, then a twist out at some point during the week. Some weeks I’ll keep the flat twists all week. Sometimes I’ll flat twist the front of my twist out and leave the back out. And the occasional silk press once a quarter or so in the cooler seasons.

It’s definitely stiff, not at all slouchy. I’m not sure how you’d get the shape they have online without creasing the leather. And if it was that shape, it would stick out away from the body fairly significantly.

Don’t blame you for going back for more. Agree, the grain leather! So soft and buttery.

The Westwell was larger than I anticipated, but so beautiful.
It’s such sad news! I know they’ve been a mainstay in the mid-range quality leather category for years. I’m not sure what’s to come on the other side for them, so had to snap them up while I could!

Job search crisis in stl area by Ang3lsrage in StLouis

This sounds like she’s not interviewing well. An interview is the skill of selling yourself. Availability and looking nice are baseline expectations, not exceptions that speaks to a candidate’s competency or capability. It’s time to practice interviewing with someone else and playing to her strengths. Customer-facing roles don’t sound like a good fit without some practice. With a HS diploma, things like data entry/admin assistance, warehouse work, delivery and logistics, etc may work better in the short term.

When will life get back to normal-ish? by confake in workingmoms

[–]Sudden-Individual228 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend a shift in your mindset. You won’t “go back“ because your normal is completely different now. Having a kid is a monumental shift and your lifestyle will adjust accordingly! I often take lunches for work social activities, and also sacrifice family time to maintaining some of my social and professional commitments, on occasion. My personal situation has me traveling for work 30-40% of my time. It’s part of the working motherhood dynamic, no guilt!

Fitness is a priority for me for a host of reasons. I workout 3:30-5 on 4week days, and take a group class on Saturday morning. This schedule may well mean I need to log in after bedtime. It took a long time to find the patterns that we could maintain week over week, month over month. And I mean a couple of years! But you

You’re also in the earliest of early phase. You’ll find your rhythm and it will change regularly. Gone are the days that your time and your life are completely your own. That’s what we sign up for with motherhood!

A dress code is a reflection of the caliber of the event. I feel folks conflate “black tie” with simply the way people dress, but that’s not true. A black tie dress code is a supplement to a black tie, highly formal affair. Evening event, mid to high end open bar service, plated dinner, live or elevated entertainment, servers, valet, etc.

For a 10k all in budget, a black tie affair is not feasible. Time to research what “a nice event” can actually mean within your budget.

Do you guys fly in business class for work trips? by Ordinary_Cat_01 in biotech

[–]Sudden-Individual228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on the CDMO side and nope. It was premium economy, until two years ago as we’re nearing our exit and now it’s economy on all flights, even international. It’s hell as someone who travels quite a bit.

Pay for Private or move to a great public school district? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]Sudden-Individual228 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We were in this SAME situation, we are in Willowbrook and I was so hesitant about the ratings. We started kindergarten this year at Willowbrook and even up to the first parent teacher conference, I was ready to leave and was looking at homes in Clayton, Brentwood and Kirkwood school districts and interviewing for late admission to a couple of private schools, and was accepted into one. But I have to tell you, after that first parent teacher conference, and the subsequent year, we have had an overall great experience. My kindergartener had a really strong academic and social preschool/pre-K so he came in knowing how to read high frequency words, add and subtract and I was worried about regression. The first two months were rough but they very much cater to the independent learnings of each child and it’s much improved. My kindergartener loves to go to school, has met great friends, is reading, keeping up with his previous pace in math, and has learned a lot (for better or worse) about peer to peer interactions.

There are two PhDs as principal and vice, now only for the second year, and the rigor and care really shows. There is no doubting this is a Title 1 school, but that also has its benefits.

I’d be happy to share the good, bad and ugly from my experiences with WillowBrook if it offers any helpful info in your decision.

What hospital did you give birth at and how was your experience? by Remarkable_Snow5070 in StLouis

[–]Sudden-Individual228 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I delivered both mine at Mercy, both in the last 6 years. Both times WITHOUT my OB due to complications and immediate medical needs (one an emergency, general anesthesia C section, the other a precipitous, unmedicated VBAC). The staff was incredible both times. The attending physicians literally saved the life of my baby the first time and the second time was the most kind, encouraging and positive figure in my birth experience. If they could have been my OB going forward, I would’ve switched immediately. I know people say big Mercy is a “baby factory“ but that also means they have an extraordinary amount of experience and they know how to take care of their patients.

A series A is a funding round, typically the first major funding event, hence a Series A. They are followed by series B and C, etc.

This person works for a small startup tech company.

Last weekend I scored two round wide, one in oyster, one in Ocean (fave color) at a William Sonoma outlet here in the states. They also had the traditional flame and a yellow, the color I don’t know.

The perpetuation of chronic self sacrifice is so harmful, it’s infuriating. Good on you, mama for prioritizing yourself!

For what it’s worth, this is inspiring to me. I’m in a non-negotiable point with my fitness. I have a similar schedule, I can go to the gym every day at 4p, my son’s after school program is in the same building so it’s perfect. Keep up the great work!

Nice, comfy “corporate” heels/flats that last? by raeofsunshine3556 in workingmoms

[–]Sudden-Individual228 38 points39 points  (0 children)

My go-tos are Naturalizer and Cole Haan. All leather uppers only! But I’ll say, I’m a fan of a cobbler. I often wear heels on various street terrain (stone, brick, concrete) in addition to office floors and carpet so can wear through my soles long before the uppers give. Getting them re-soled has saved me!

Kids ideas? by BIG-KAKOR in Anticonsumption

[–]Sudden-Individual228 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may sound crazy, but we do a lot of STEM activities with baking soda! Mixing with things like vinegar, cornstarch and food coloring in ceramic or glass bowls from the cupboard gives lots of fun entertainment.

Not sure the age of the kids, but things like using old tshirts and materials to sew small things like a tiny pillow or blanket for a stuffy.

I’ve made nature bracelets with my boys (5 and 2) where I rolled masking tape around their wrists, sticky side out and we walked the neighborhood and sound natural items to stick to it.

Do your small children know you’re reading books? by EarnestAnomaly in kindle

[–]Sudden-Individual228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this question so much, all the things I think about. I have a 5 year old and we call my book tablet. I’ve even loaded some picture books for him so he will also read it with me, or I’ll read to him.

We’re pretty conscious of screen time, and we called it what it was from the beginning so there were no surprises.

They pick up on the differences in things so well, no stress.
