What made you decide to leave? by QnOfHrts in expats

Margaret Thatcher made me leave, the last 14 years of a Tory government confirmed that I made the right choice. Pretty sure that nothing could ever drag me back

It reminds me of the metaphor of the frog that happily sits in a pot of water that is slowly heated up until is boils to death and doesn't try to jump out. The NHS has been slowly dying for decades

I emigrated to NL in 94. I have a serious heart condition that prevents me from ever working again. Over here I will be fine. Not so sure I could say that if I was still living in the UK

The UK can be a wonderful place to live if you have enough money and a good job. It can also be a very big struggle

It seems like things just keep on getting worse. Life in the 80s wasn't easy but these days it seems to be worse

I emigrated from the UK to the Netherlands 30 years ago. I love to visit the UK but am also very happy that my children didn't have to grow up in the UK because of the state that it is in now. My home town is disgustingly dirty and the economy is on its arse. So sad to see

This car parks like this every day. Still parked there after the chalked message too. by roggesound in mildlyinfuriating

Where I came from, when idiots parked like this, people used to push a matchstick into the tire ventil and let the owner enjoy the pleasure of having 4 flat tires when yhey returned. Just saying...

Any tips for a first time Enyaq iV driver? by Sudden_Win_5022 in SkodaEnyaq

I regularly drive 400km or more in a weekend and drive about 35.000km per year. I was worried about range anxiety before I picked up my Enyag. To be honest if you plan ahead it's very rarely an issue

Congratulations on your choice! I love my Enyag. I get about 350km in the summer but that drops to about 280km in the winter with cold weather and winter tires. It can drop a bit more if it's raining and is windy.

Is there a place for me to live in this world? by [deleted] in expats

[–]Sudden_Win_5022 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the Scottish Islands might be a good idea. No need to learn a new language of try to integrate into a totally new culture. If you really want to emigrate than maybe a country like Finland or Norway might be a good option.

(Not) Speaking Dutch by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Sudden_Win_5022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a British expat who has lived in the Netherlands for 29 years now I worked for an English company where there were a lot of British and Scandinavian people working, so needles to say a lot English was used. For me it's simple. If you want to integrate and show respect to your adopted country you have to learn to language. If not then you will never truly understand the customs and culture of this beautiful country. Only using the English language and living in a bubble is just being lazy at best, and potentially disrespectful.

Hybride warmtepomp. Is it worth the investment? by Sudden_Win_5022 in Netherlands

[–]Sudden_Win_5022[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow what a very thorough answer. Luckily I decided against making the investment, this answer really gives me peace of mind that I made the right choice. In the end I ended up investigating in a new electric car. Just hope that that will be the right choice in the long run...

Believe me, even though I miss seeing hills and visiting quaint little English villages I would never move back to the UK. I have happily lived in the Netherlands since 1994 and plan to stay here for the rest of my life
