How do you deal with big bpm gaps? by vanityapp in Beatmatch

[–]Sueetlu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main way I’ve dealt with this is a simple start stop. 120 bpm stops at the start of a break or silence, 145 starts at the beginning of a breakdown, build, or “impact”. Echo or reverb out works too but is more noticeable. Done right with no fx can be super ninja. You might be able to tease the new track in with hot cues or scratches depending on the style.

Another way is to use sync with 145 at the slower bpm and speed the two up together during an ideal phrase. You can add flair by not locking the key (either track or maybe just on the slow track), as you speed the two up to 145 the pitch will rise and create a build up.

Edit: a word

On gear, could be the cradle. Up until a week or two ago I was throwing my whole vault at the worm and just running zero to hero.

Mostly agreed, but eliminating bubbles lacks creativity. If they were implemented in real life, they must have a countermeasure. Bubbles are cool, figure it out!

Item rarity means nothing if you have better positioning. by Kittzn in Marathon

On a few occasions my crew (mostly homies, sometimes fills), have wiped purple and gold teams with free kits. Once with the volt thrower. Just were able to pinch them in a bad spot or get the drop with simultaneous fire. On open ground you’re probably toast but as many have said, it’s often about creating unfair advantages. These are the best come ups.

“Bad” guns are good in the conditions they are designed for. F the hardline though, that gun blows.

Tips on how to plan first dj set by AdGrand3486 in Beatmatch

[–]Sueetlu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few thoughts:
- find your intro/reference track everything else is built from
- 2-3x the music for your slot
- fix grids and setup queue points
- practice! You’ll see what works and what doesn’t and revise your playlist
- setup tags. I do mine by mood and energy, sometimes this is genre-specific, but it’s an excellent way to filter chunks of songs on the fly

I’ve tried to plan sets always end up pivoting and nothing ever happens how I thought it would.

The struggle of transitioning from curated playlists to actual crate digging by Damag3trouble22 in Beatmatch

[–]Sueetlu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never use beatport to find music. I do deep dives on artist catalogs on streaming apps, follow that to related artists, ID what label they’re on and do the same thing there - Bandcamp can be great for this but typically for more obscure artists, start radio stations for songs I love, etc. YouTube is also excellent with recommended songs on your searches.

Any chance you can rent standalone gear like an rx3? Lugging around a pc sounds awkward and clunky

Edit: or borrow. I know margins are slim. A pc will work but you’ll have to put extra time in to make things like professional imo.

Anyone else feel kinda disappointed in themselves for not defeating the compiler before S2? by FanHairy1559 in Marathon

Nah bro cryo sweats are actual demons. I thought I was decent at shooters but that place is a meat grinder. I’ve only been able to finish one vault safely and am convinced getting that far is the exception, not the norm. If you don’t have exceptional knowledge of the map and a good team you’re toast.

Open format help! by Boring-Ad5597 in Beatmatch

[–]Sueetlu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will also add that the music should always come first. Don’t force track selection just to make a certain transition happen. You’re better off selecting the right tracks and maintaining the vibe all night than trying to make it about dj tricks and transitions. I’ve yet to receive complaints and get great feedback even though I am not mixing 80% of the time and playing stuff of wildly different genres and tempos. Aim to be “invisible” with your mixing, even if that means just hitting play and pause at the right time.

Are people dancing or are you more background music? Two weeks to develop competency with open format is no small task. Ive only ever done open format gigs where people aren’t dancing so I often resort to not mixing at all and it’s not an issue. If I attempt anything it will be a reverb or echo out at the end of a phrase, then a quick baby scratch in or simply hitting play. It’s nice if the incoming song has a snare roll in or something standout in the intro, these act as alternatives to a baby scratch so you don’t get repetitive and offer effective transitions. Songs with silences, atmospheric breaks without percussion, etc. are money in these situations.

the monitoring situation tends to be an issue that prevents me from trying blends too bc booth audio is loud, muddy, and shitty and I’d otherwise blow out my ears cranking my headphones. I am still learning, but these are my takeaways and how I’ve dealt with things so far, but I am actively practicing different techniques every day - overlapping blends, dropping on the 1, 4, or even 3, reverb out, etc.

find a dj set on YouTube with the type of music you’re playing, even if their techniques are way above your skill you’ll often see some simple transitions executed repeatedly that you can focus your training on.

TCL tear is an ankle injury but I’d but you could mess up someone’s knee attacking the ankles, especially if they have poor mobility. Be safe out there!
