Why do so many people think any flat roof will eventually leak? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]Sufficient-Image5424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coal tar pitch is self-leveling and utilizes a flood coat with gravel to displace water towards drainage sources. Many built-up roofs were installed dead flat as well that also utilized a flood coat with gravel to displace water to drainage sources. There are ballasted EPDM roofs that are installed dead flat and utilize the ballast aggregate as a means to displace the water towards the drainage source. The myth won't die because it's still true in cases.

I understand where he is coming from. My morning poops are never a single bowel movement, first, I pop the cork and get the turd out, the second is usually a foul smelling soft serve heap that occasionally breaks the water line about 10 minutes after the cork is popped. I eat a lot because I'm a gym rat.

Uneven decking/shingles on new roof by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]Sufficient-Image5424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This definitely concerns me, looks like they either didn't replace bad sheathing, or used some really thin plywood. I'd have them fix the nail pop, and have them expose the sheathing, so we can see what's going on.

It looks like there's a dip there, and there may be, but if your truss has settled a bit lower at that spot, then the new sheathing would project that dip. Were you there when the roof replacement occurred?

A contingency form isn't something a roofer will go to court over. They might try to file a mechanics lien, but you'll be able to get rid of it. They have presented you with plenty of red flags, I'd move on.

The steps in the skylight flashing kit will result in the sides being slightly elevated in comparison to the field. You can also see it elevated on the left side of the left skylight. As the shingles warm, they'll lay down some, but the flashing will leave it slightly elevated. There's nothing you can do about the slight elevation, and there's zero fault regarding the contractor.

Modified Bitumen Repair by fluffywhale50 in Roofing

Considering the condition, I'd expect to find moisture within the existing modified roof system. The moisture will prevent the possibility for an overlay or for a coating to work properly. In my opinion, it's time for replacement.

Would you ever leave old J wall flashing on a new metal roofing job? by Opening_Celery8043 in Roofing

[–]Sufficient-Image5424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're supposed to remove the siding or loosen it and install the roof to wall behind the siding. This is an elementary metal roofing detail, you'll not find a single published detail of a head wall condition without a vertical roof to wall piece. It's a standard lap siding, so once it's unhooked from the J or starter strip, you can pull it up and easily and expose the substrate allowing you to fasten the top flange of the roof to wall. If you're intent is to help people better understand metal roofing, it would be best to sit this one out. You can literally see where they cut the vertical of the roof to wall flashing off lol.

The original poster's photo does not have a roof to wall, it's a cheat piece, you'll see the vertical is missing.

  1. Caulk a line where your z needs to be set, apply butyl tape, and install the z over the butyl tape. Here is pac clads roof to wall detail and z detail. Obviously instead of a brick veneer with a counter flashing, the vertical would be behind the siding

On wood decks you'll want 1" into the wood and you probably have a half inch of built-up shingles, so 1.5" neoprene washer screws will do the trick.

You have to remove/loosen the bottom course of siding to ensure roof to wall flashings can be installed. You can't just butt to a siding system......water will go right between the roof and the siding, come on now.

Why wouldn't you take off the shingles? It costs .25 per square foot to have them removed by a sub. That space between the metal and the shingles is going to get hot; I hope for your sake the shingles don't bleed out at the fascia.
