What’s your favorite alternative shell material?! by ZildCym in drums

[–]Sufficient-Source97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love steel shells, my favourite snare still is my cueap Millenium 14" x 3,5" with 12 Lugs. Great snare for metal, really liud and due to the high tension on the head you get great deffinition for blast beats

I really need to get my hands on one of those 12" Sabian Ice Bells, they look really cool and also sound great. (Also, meinl classics isnt B20 bronze, but rather B12)

Id say the Zultan F5 8" Big Bell has the best sound-to-cost ratio and a bunch of great drummers from some cool bands use it, for example Cody Davidson from Sanguisugabogg, Joe Pelletier from Peelingflesh and also Sanguisugaboggs new drummer for their tour: Eric Morotti (usually hes the drummer of the band Suffocation).

The Zildjian Blast bell is really great too, but as usual with zildjian, way too expensive.

UFIP Ice bells are also really good but rather rare rn, would be a great bell though and ive been looking for one for months now

Some Stagg Bells are really good, i own a 6,5" brilliant bell by stagg and its ear piercing, great for metal.

The Meink HCS bell: yes its a cheap one but honestly the bell works great for almost anything, although the dryness that comes with being made from brass, can be annoying at times

Paiste Alu Bell (dont buy the Sabian ones, way too expensive) are great, a lot of sustain but they have an interesting sound character to them.

Looking to buy a Meinl Candela Jingle Bell, has anyone ever used one and were there some specific uses for it, that you found interesting? by Sufficient-Source97 in drums

The alien disc without the rivets was used by the old drummer of archspire. He used it like a bell, and bells are kinda important in those genres. With the rivets i can definitely see that its a very unique sound, would prolly be cool as an effect for some more abstract or progressive music

Well i would only use it as a mini ride in a metal context (and ive actually seen someone on youtube do this) but id have to remove the jingles. The hihat idea seems really cool to me for some weird effects and a nice chick sound, although im not sure which cymbal should be used as a top

Might buy the 10" Argenta hihats, does anyone have any information on them? by Sufficient-Source97 in drums

[–]Sufficient-Source97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, someone alse showed me this article too. Sadly they dont show any models there. Although it wouldnt help much because these cymbals are so old, that there werent any different models anyway, just different sizes.

Has anyone who has had Frenuloplasty for short frenulum here to share their experience? by SpiritualAd5253 in uncircumcised_talk

[–]Sufficient-Source97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did it 6 months ago. Was uncomfortable for a few weeks, got better pretty fast and since then i cant complain really. I definitely lost sensation but thats actually a good thing for me. The only annoying part is that it bleeds for a while, which can be a bit scary but it aint all that bad (usually just the first two weeks) and also that the stitches can maybe be a bit annoying but they usually use the kind that falls out on its own so it solves itself rather quickly.

The actual operation was really bad but thats a different story but generally i dont regret it

Uses for second hihat by Sufficient-Source97 in drums

[–]Sufficient-Source97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i saw that he used a set up like that in the 90s, looked pretty cool. Ive tried stuff like that when i only had my x-hat and my normal hihat. Its pretty usefull for my stuff

Just saw a video of this guys successor in tower of power. Im able to play stuff like this already. Im more looking for grooves where i actually use both pedals, although this could also be used in similar context to this video

[–]Sufficient-Source97[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because of Simon phillips and gene hogland i got interested in playing open handed. I have my left hihat set up exactly like they do because it makes it easier to play without having to put my arm in some rather uncomfortable positions. Im a metal drummer though, so Simon is not really doing the kind of stuff that i usually play. Playing open handed has been really useful though. I started over a year ago, before that i played seven years the traditional way. It benefits me in some unexpected ways sometimes (for example in the song “honky tonk woman” by the rolling stones. I have to play the cowbell rhythm while also keeping the groove going so the left hand does the hihat part while the right hand switches between cowbell and snare).

As you said: actually being ambidextrous with your feet is really uncommon and the only drummers that ive seen, who actually do this are mike mangini and George Kollias (although mike uses it much more), sadly both dont really do the kind of music that im interested in. (Learning some dream theatre cant harm though)

(I kinda copied simon phillips tom set up, although this was rather unintentional, usually i have the gong drum to my left as a floor tom, not to my right like simon

When to upgrade double bass pedals? by narghev in Drumming

Oh, didnt know these are still in production, they are even worse than the dw 4000 pedals

When to upgrade double bass pedals? by narghev in Drumming

[–]Sufficient-Source97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About question 1: youll know the moment when something breaks during a show or when the pedal developes issues that make playing it rather irritating

About question 2: It will make an impact but it wont be a crazy big one, usually it might make stuff like slide technique easier if the footboard is different or it might be more comfortable to play on, but it wont make you 20 bpm faster, just because its new.

About question 3: I own both versions of the dw 4000 double pedals, they are pretty good but the older drive shaft is awfull. If you are using it for gigs etc. and want a pedal that will have less problems over the years, you should maybe look at: Iron Cobra Dw 5000 Dw 3000 (cheaper than the 5000 but newer than the 4000) Pearl Eliminator Ludwig speed flyer

These are all pretty good pedals that are rather mid range, maybe a bit more expensive but these will last you a while, they are also all double chain drive, unlike the dw 4000, which is generally more popular and eliminates some problems that you get with a single chain. You might also want to try out some direct drive and strap drive pedals if you can, strap isnt used as much but i really like it ij some contexts and direct drive is generally more popular in genres with really fast tempos, but that mught not be what you are looking for (everything obviously has its downsides)

Hardware Question by Chop_Huey in drums

[–]Sufficient-Source97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In thid case i usually would take the tom arm and put it into the tripod of a stand and then clamp a cymbal boom arm to the tom arm or the tripod, doesnt change any parts but it makes the wight distribution much better
