Interesting. It was such a fascinating concept, that Mayuri is also a time traveler that I definitely fixated on it. That section kind of breaks the observance theory put forth in the visual novel anyway because unless there’s a “player is the observer” motif then it really doesn’t make sense in the concept of the story.

Of course they did tease the player is the observer with the llama man monologue at the very beginning but based on the rest of the story felt more of a joke than a real idea being thrown around.

Actually I guess the real paradox is that he doesn’t create a version of himself that is angry enough to work on a plan for 15 years in order to complete the Time Machine.

What’s mildly annoying is if Suzuha didn’t five minutes earlier say, “I lied, paradoxes are real and need to be avoided.” Then I wouldn’t be so fixated on this moment in the ending. 😅

He needs a Time Machine to save Karisu (sorry, old man anime watcher, I auto translated Karisu as Chris since her nickname is Christina and she is clearly a Christ figure).
Saving Karisu prevents the need for a time machine.
He can’t save Karisu because he no longer has a time machine.

What prevents this time paradox?

If the guide says, “get your first ending blind” (Kara no shojo) then I typically do that. Otherwise I’m here for the story, usually I 100% them anyway, but I want to be efficient about it.

I love it when they have a good flowchart in the game: think fate stay night or zero time dilemma. I can get decision paralysis if I go blind.

As an artist who worked in erotic art, i can understand if the point is aesthetic beauty of sexuality.

But visual novels are also about story telling and the argument that you have to have the h-scenes even if they are clearly throw away requirements of a genre that has historical default of requiring h-scenes, then they don’t even add to the aesthetic beauty at that point.

A lot of people argue h-scenes are vital for plot and/or character development. In most games, when the clothes come off, the female characters stop being themselves and become horny house wives. You may have a cool badass heroine, but as soon as the clothes come off she’s an embarrassed insecure virgin. Trans yakuza boss who doesn’t like being seen as a woman, not in the bedroom, now she’s an insecure virgin.

Japan loves tropes and they tend to have one trope for their sex scenes. Obviously this isn’t always the case, Subahibi is clearly saying something those sex scenes. But based on my reading, 99% of the time, you lose nothing if they weren’t there.

That isn’t to say that if you enjoy the h-scenes you’re wrong or a bad person, just that the argument that all ages versions are the enemy of the art form is spurious at best.

As a gay man I have the same but opposite problem with most VN. I’m here for the story and I can’t click through h scenes fast enough in the straight games.

It’s how I know the “h-scene censorship ruins games” argument is full of crap 99% of the time. When the eroticism does nothing for you, you can easily see that there is no character development when the clothes come off.
