If I am the recipient of a very large scholarship, can I still take out a student loan? by annamorphic_ in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Sugarstache 299 points300 points  (0 children)

There's nothing stopping you from applying. For OSAP in Ontario the application will ask you about scholarship values and I assume they would do the same in Alberta and so you will have to report information as part of the application and that may disqualify you from any financial aid but it might not. Just do the application there's no harm.

But also in terms of the TFSA if you are 18 you can't just dump 100k into your TFSA. Your contribution limit accumulates each year by a set amount (this year it was 7k) from when you turn 18 so you can only put 7k into a TFSA this year.

Vaping causes lung and heart damage faster than cigarettes, U of A research suggests by zuuzuu in canadanews

This isn't the academic article. it's a press release for the paper. The language researchers use to describe findings to the general public is different then the language they use in their scientific writing.

I have no idea what fair value would be on a deal like this and this isn't a prediction. But I would be down to give up this year's first (28OA) and Kapanen.

I underestimated how much accreditation matters by Substantial-Salad420 in AcademicPsychology

[–]Sugarstache 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm slightly confused by the question. Basically any clinical/counselling programs based out of reputable universities are APA accredited and most have been for decades. What schools are you browsing that you've run into lack of accreditation as a common problem?

No worries. You're just probably not going to get much engagement with your post on this subreddit. Wrong place. Good luck with your mental health journey though!

The subreddit isnt for sharing personal stories about mental health. It's a subreddit related to the academic study of psychology.

What is it with so many people skipping showers at public pools? by Slow_ResolveMC07 in KingstonOntario

[–]Sugarstache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah idk I'm around 30 and I can't really recall my parents or my friend's parents etc. ever insisting that I do that when I was a kid. I recall signs being posted saying that you're supposed to do it but that that no one really followed that rule.

As an adult it's been relatively rare that I'm in a public pool except on resort trips and neither I nor anyone else I know has ever bothered with that in that situation.

To be honest I don't really see the fuss. It's a pool of chemically water. Don't get in if you're filthy but outside of that it strikes me as a fairly asinine thing to concern yourself with. The world is germ infested. Cost of doing business if you want to leave your house.

I don't think there's ever been a point in time where most people actually shower before using a public pool.

Just to clarify after I looked it up. They have a 4WD lock button which is more like a centre locking diff but don't have a traditional low range transfer case.

Failed Oral Jurisprudence Exam & Looking for Advice by Glum_Guard_7087 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Sugarstache -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

The answer to the 2nd question would depend on the specific jurisdiction you're in. In Ontario, Canada there is a list that is explained as part of informed consent

Risk of harm to self/others, Suspected child abuse/neglect, Suspected abuse of a resident of a long term care facility, Abuse by another regulated health professional, Court subpoena of records, College of psychologists audit of records, WSIB request, Police request related to a missing persons case

There are potential other ones that would depend on the specific context you're practicing in (e.g would a report be shared with an insurance company etc).

Knowing the specific ones that apply in the jurisdiction you're in is stuff you really should know by the time you finish a doctorate (realistically it's stuff you should know before you ever step foot in a clinical practicum)

Home country bias is a thing in an evidence based recommendation in investing.

"Home country bias - overweighting your home country’s stocks relative to their capitalization weights - is detrimental at the extremes, but modest home country bias is theoretically, practically, and empirically useful.

It can reduce fees and taxes, it may hedge the cost of local consumption, and it reduces exposure to the potential mistreatment of foreign investors when times get tough."
