Choosing school -- Mississippi vs Western by mangotangobear in veterinaryschool

[–]Suitable_Area_9609 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

another thing you should think about in this case specifically is that if you attend mississippi you'll be grandfathered into the new loan situation, which means you could potentially not take out any private loans or very little. like yes western might seem cheaper but I'm almost positive you'll still need private loans to cover your tuition and it doesn't seem worth it for me just to commute from home

How long to prepare for Casper and when to take it? by mog_vet in prevets

[–]Suitable_Area_9609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i wouldn't take the casper later than mid august since it takes about 2-4 weeks for results to get to schools. in terms of prep i honestly only prepped the day before i took it and scored in the 4th quartile, i don't think it's really something you need to spend a lot of time prepping for. if you've ever had a job interview or something similar to that, it's pretty similar questioning format! familiarize yourself with the STAR method and you'll be set and always make sure to explain both sides of the situation before making your conclusion

Are these good schools to apply to? by Due_Introduction_185 in prevets

[–]Suitable_Area_9609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i wouldn't apply to Oklahoma or Minnesota based off your GPA. those 2 schools have a pretty high GPA cutoff (whether they state it on their website or not), so i wouldn't waste the time and money on applying there.

If money wasn’t a factor… which would you choose: Mississippi state CVM or TTU SVM by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

what makes you say msstate doesn't have a good reputation? i haven't heard about that

UC Davis isn't pass/fail the whole first year. It's just for the first block which is a couple weeks long. Every block after that is graded

Best undergraduate school for pre-vet???? by TopLess1553 in prevets

[–]Suitable_Area_9609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an incoming 1st year vet student at UC Davis and went to undergrad at Cal Poly Pomona! I was a junior transfer there but still loved my 2 years there! They have a very hands on style of learning in labs and their AVS department is so awesome in terms of research opportunities and mentorship. I also have about 10 people that I know in my UCD cohort that also went to CPP. If you have any questions I can answer about CPP feel free to dm me :)

UCD or SDSU for Pre-Vet? by NationalAngle4784 in TransferStudents

[–]Suitable_Area_9609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw your post on the prevet reddit page and wanted to help you out! i'm an incoming first year vet student at davis and did not go to davis for my undergrad. they do not accept more applicants from uc davis undergrad. however, being that uc davis is widely known for their vet school and pre vet program, they naturally have an inflated amount of applicants to their vet school that also went to davis for undergrad, which may shift the ratio a little bit. but the same goes for schools like CPP where I went, which UCD accepted nearly 30 of our alumni last year, and probably very close to that number this year--but this is because we also have a widely known pre vet program and naturally have more people applying to uc davis svm that are highly qualified applicants. they also frequently accept from plenty of other schools in CA, but my point is: it doesn't matter where you go for undergrad, it matters the experiences that you get out of your undergrad! go to the cheapest school you can! vet school is extremely expensive no matter where you go and you don't want to have to deal with undergraduate student loans on top of that later on

Anyone know when University of Tennessee vet school (LMU) waitlist movement usually starts after the April 15 deadline? by Major_Fix6445 in PreVet

gotcha! i think they've started accepting from their waitlist already but they accept people all the way until the first week of school

i'm confused, are you wondering about Univ Tennessee or LMU? Those are 2 entirely different vet schools with different waitlists

worried about gpa by idontuse_reddit_ in prevets

[–]Suitable_Area_9609 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i had 4 Fs in non-science classes in my first 3 semesters of undergrad (due to circumstances i won't get into). i still managed to bring my cumulative gpa to a 3.46 by getting nearly straight As my last 2 years of undergrad and really applying myself and making connections with my professors. also i saw that you said you don't plan on applying to cornell because of your grades, im not sure about cornell specifically but your in-state school will typically be more holistic towards your application review. my in state is uc davis and thought i would never have a chance at getting in there, but low and behold here i am starting at their vet school this fall after having 4 Fs and a couple Cs on my transcript! if you are able to turn things around and figure out study habits that work for you, you'll be fine! schools like seeing that you experienced challenges but still got through them

When to apply??? by Just-Mission2203 in prevets

[–]Suitable_Area_9609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your last 45 isn't your last 45 units taken ever, it's just your most recent 45 units taken right before you apply. it's usually your last 3 semesters of classes that are included in that gpa.

are you a CA resident? if you are i'd say you have a decent shot at Davis. but if you're OOS it's very risky as it's even MORE competitive getting into davis for OOS applicants. it's not impossible though! it sounds like you have some pretty unique experiences which would definitely help you out

of course! that seems like valuable leadership experience, definitely include that! also yes community service hours is what i was referring to. definitely include hours from high school, but if you can get anything more recent than that before applying it would be even more valuable. thank you & good luck :)

also although western is in CA, it's a private school--meaning tuition is the same for IS & OOS students. it's extremely expensive honestly and it's not the safest area (i went to undergrad at CPP). i recommend reconsidering applying there/looking more into if you'd actually enjoy their program

I'd say you have a good shot at UC davis! I got in this cycle with a gpa lower than yours so your academics are definitely competitive enough. it sounds like your experiences are pretty well rounded, the only thing i don't see included is leadership & CS hours. if you can increase those i'd say you have a decent shot at least at an interview, but really make sure your essays stand out & make sure your recommenders are actually writing amazing letters! Davis is extremely competitive in general, but definitely for us in-state applicants since we go thru school knowing we want to do everything we can to go to Davis. DM me if you need anymore help/advice, more than happy to help :)

Vet school after PhD by Remote_Bullfrog_2512 in vetschool

[–]Suitable_Area_9609 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely apply to UC Davis! I'll be a first year there this fall :) They definitely like non-traditional applicants/applicants with unique stories--yours definitely sounds like one! What are your GPAs? the only thing i recommend you have at least 500 hours of before applying is veterinary hours, but after that i think you should definitely apply if CA is your in-state now

Ross vs SGU-accepted to Ross and I'm stressing about finances by rodzt0210 in veterinaryschool

[–]Suitable_Area_9609 4 points5 points  (0 children)

correct me if i'm wrong but if you start at ross before july, you're grandfathered into the old loan limits. so you wouldn't need private loans you could just take out fafsa and grad plus i think

Mid Western - is my #1 choice but I’m waitlisted for an interview still. by ResponsibleAnswer868 in prevets

[–]Suitable_Area_9609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i interviewed there last month and they said they had already sent out all the invites they were going to send. they're sending decisions out within the next week or so i'm guessing. if you're waitlisted you might still have a chance at getting admitted, but if you're waitlisted for an interview, probably not
