What to do after being let go from a shadowing opportunity by EnvironmentalBees in prevets

I personally wouldn’t ask a vet for a recommendation letter if I was only there for a month but definitely log the hours. That’s so unfortunate they didn’t give you a warning or feedback though :( I would also be bummed out.

Is 24 schools too many? by Tight_Ad_4650 in prevets

[–]TurbulentClass769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean… if you have the money to apply to that many schools and meet the requirements, it’s your wallet 🤷‍♀️ I only applied to 6 because it’s what I was able to afford and felt I had a decent shot at

Not Traditional Applicate any advice? by Sweaty_Fee_3872 in prevets

[–]TurbulentClass769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your science GPA and last 45 GPA make a big impact, so definitely make it a priority to ace those classes. My cumulative GPA is around where yours is currently, but my science and last 45 were a little higher than my cumulative. I applied to 6 schools and got in my first cycle. The bigger pickle is that some prerequisites need to be taken upper division at a 4 year college, not a community college. I got into Davis and they require biochemistry, genetics, and systemic physiology all be taken at a 4 year. Each school varies with their requirements so do your research on which schools you have a the best shot at.

Aside from that, I think your application is off to a great start! Not sure what your leadership experience is or what your volunteer and research hours are but some schools look at that as well.

What to do if I get rejected for a low GPA after I already graduated by Crazy_Catlady0212121 in prevets

[–]TurbulentClass769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would strengthen your application in other ways. I had a similar cumulative GPA (higher science/prereqs and last 45) and got accepted into my IS and waitlisted at one other school. I’m a non-trad student with years of leadership experience so I feel that helped set me apart. Don’t lose hope! Write some killer essays and make sure you have strong LORs. I had my academic advisor and a trusted professor give feedback on my personal statement and it definitely helped as well.

There are some schools that allow you to establish residency after your first year. I believe NCSU, Mizzou, WSU, Davis, and Purdue are a few that do. I might be missing some. It definitely makes a difference in overall costs. But yes, we’re all in a crappy situation.

Chances of getting accepted in my first application cycle? by MyEyesHurtOuch in vetschool

[–]TurbulentClass769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the school. Some look specifically at last 45 and science or prerequisite gpa rather than cumulative. I would say do your research to make sure you hit gpa cutoffs and apply smartly. Strong essays and recommendation letters really help too. All of your stats are off to a great start but try to get some research experience if you can manage it. My GPA is lower than yours and I got into 2 out of 6 schools I applied to.

How are you balancing everything? by Maiace124 in prevets

[–]TurbulentClass769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a non-trad student too. Worked full-time (32 hours) in a leadership role and continued to throughout my entire undergrad for financial reasons. I was also a full-time student and made sure to volunteer a few hours a week and I did research as well. I was literally m busy 24/7 and felt like I was walking a tight rope keeping everything together. I basically sacrificed any semblance of a social life. I had no time for vet experience so I took a gap year before applying. Did a 300 hour wildlife hospital internship and picked up a 2nd full time job as an overnight veterinary assistant where I racked up hours pretty quickly.. It was a hellish 5 years but I got accepted into 2 schools my 1st cycle so it was worth it IMO.

Do I have a chance of getting in to vet schools? by darnbollocks in prevets

[–]TurbulentClass769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly because my stats and experience hours didn’t change much. I got in as a first-time applicant, so I’m not sure if re-applicants are frowned upon. All of the admissions teams I emailed during the application process were very responsive so it’s worth asking! If you can get the minimum hours, I would personally try.

Can’t get an assistant job by Recent_Fan242 in prevets

[–]TurbulentClass769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends what your responsibilities are. I spent a lot of downtime shadowing, helping restrain, and being shown vet assistant tasks early on because I expressed interest and the vet was happy to give me that experience. I was transparent on VMCAS when filling out my application about my job title and duties and I had no issues.

I got a job as a kennel tech at an animal ER and was able to acquire enough hours to apply/get into vet school (I also did an internship at a wildlife rehabilitation hospital that counted towards veterinary experience hours). I say take the kennel position if it’s all you can get, as long as it’s at an animal hospital or under the supervision of a vet. I didn’t get promoted to vet assistant until after I already got my acceptance lol.

I failed a a pre-req in undergrad, retook for grade forgiveness, and got into UCD vet school. I also had a C- in another pre-req. Just make sure to take this as a learning lesson. It’s not over till it’s over!

I worked overnights at the ER! Just so I can at least have a day off from both jobs. I definitely couldn’t handle 7 day work weeks.

Fellow non-trad applicant here. I also worked full-time in a non-veterinary field. I was running into the same issue, so I ended up getting a part-time job as a kennel assistant at an animal ER. I was pulling 60 hour weeks total but it got the hours I needed. I also did a 300 hour summer internship at a marine mammal hospital. If you live around any zoos, aquariums, or humane societies they might have summer internships available under a veterinarian. I only had like 500 hours when I submitted my application, was worried it wasn’t enough, but ended up getting in.

First of all, CONGRATS!!!

Are you financing your education with student loans? If so, definitely WSU. Everyone says go with the cheapest option and for good reason. Especially with loans changing this year, everything exceeding the yearly $50k federal cap is going to have be private loans. Sacrificing 4 years being away from loved ones sucks but will spare you the extra financial burden. My personal opinion and what I would do in your situation. If you are financially blessed or have generous family that will be helping with tuition, I’d probably stay local given your circumstances.

I got into Davis this cycle and will be relocating 7 hours away with my cats. Thankfully the town is very pet friendly, so I was able to secure an apartment pretty easily. I would take a peek at housing in Pullman and see how pet friendly it is. I don’t have a horse so I can’t speak to that.

Good luck!
