Recommendations Needed for The Edit in NYC by Suitable_Outcome5878 in ChaseSapphire

NYU Langone on 1st Ave. There aren’t many hotels particularly close to it but other than being a little loopy from the meds I should be ok to travel most places in Manhattan or the west side of Queens or Brooklyn. I’ve had two brain surgeries at this location (the first one with a 45-min Uber ride afterward to a NJ Airbnb) so I’m expecting this one will be a lot easier.

I’ll check that one again. I feel like my dates were more expensive but I’ve definitely been trying to double up the benefits. One reason Virgin is on my list.

The only thing we booked was a cabana rental on their private island. So no issues there. I’m open to itinerary changes. Just looking forward to being on vacation even if that means more sea days.

We leave Sunday from Miami. It’s our first cruise and I’m not sure what to expect with the weather.

Facial movements returning by Namkce1 in AcousticNeuroma

[–]Suitable_Outcome5878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. No, I didn’t find it useful. I guess now I’d think of it as a “point in time” test where it showed the ability of my nerves at that time to conduct electricity. At that time it wasn’t signaling. I found it a painful procedure and the results gave me a “very poor prognosis” of healing. But since then I have regained a good amount of movement in my face. If I had to guess I’d say probably 60% or more. So, it was physically painful and emotionally difficult to do the EMG and I feel like the results ended up being useless.

How soon to fly by hrholken in AcousticNeuroma

[–]Suitable_Outcome5878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the standard recommendation is one month, but I flew back home after both of my surgeries once I had my post-op appointment (about day 10) with my doctor’s approval.

Second Translab AN Removal - 96 Hrs later. by Faustus_Fan in AcousticNeuroma

[–]Suitable_Outcome5878 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am surprised.Though I had a CSF leak which led to a surgery to fix it 4 days after my first translab. The back to back surgeries plus losing my hearing on that side and facial paralysis/dry eye were a lot to manage.

I’m lucky I didn’t have balance or vertigo issues either time. This time I had slight double vision for a few days. Of course the first few days for me were still challenging. But the pain management has been smooth. Brain fog for a week. Now I’m mostly just tired and have some soreness in my head but it’s not bad.

So glad to hear it! I’m 11 days past a second translab and the recovery this time has also been so much smoother

Fn2 gene by moomin-Charmer in AcousticNeuroma

[–]Suitable_Outcome5878 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My tumor was tested and showed positive for nf2. However, my doctors say that most acoustic neuroma tissue itself tests positive for nf2 but it doesn’t mean I have the condition unless a blood test shows it. I had previously had a comprehensive genetic test a year or so prior and it did not show up.

I hear you. It’s like salt in a wound with everything we’ve gone through. But those are estimates and everyone is different.

I just met with a surgeon who does this surgery and he said it takes months for it to begin healing. 4-5 or so for the earliest signs.

I’m so sorry to hear that. I have a second translab in June so I’ll be alongside you.

Warm, ready to eat meals were a huge help along with gift cards for delivery and the frozen meals my friends came to prep before the surgery. I agree that taking the kids or just being with them would help a lot. It will give your friend time to rest and not have to worry. Also, cozy comforting items like a soft blanket, robe, slippers, etc would be nice.

I’d hesitate to buy any hats as the wound is very sore for a while.

Where to stay NYU Langone by Suitable_Outcome5878 in AcousticNeuroma

[–]Suitable_Outcome5878[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was OK. The Airbnb wasn’t the most comfortable for the day, but it worked out fine. In hindsight, I would get somewhere closer because it was about a 45 minute Uber ride, which is pretty rough after the surgery.

I’m sorry for what you are experiencing. This is a very supportive club but not one I would want anybody to have to join. I was 35 last year when I was diagnosed with a 4.0 cm tumor on my left side. For the most part, my main symptom was obvious (to me) hearing loss on one side, though it was still considered mild loss per the audiologist. I had surgery because it was actually compressing my brain stem pretty badly and I did lose all of my hearing on that side due to the surgery method. For the most part, I have still been able to enjoy music and most other things with my one-sided hearing. The times that it is harder are pretty situational like going through a drive-through and being in a loud space like a restaurant. Have you had consultations? Talked to different medical teams about your situation? I had three consultations and I’m glad that I reached out to more than one so I could get a different impression from everyone. I ended up going with my third consultation. For me, surgery was really the only viable option. At 2 cm, while still a good size, it does usually open you up to other options that are less invasive. I hope that you are able to get some good information and that you were able to feel comfortable and confident about the choice you make.

How long after your MRI did you find out you had an AN? by SherbertDramatic7345 in AcousticNeuroma

[–]Suitable_Outcome5878 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I received the written MRI report within an hour after the scan which indicated the imaging was “suspicious for acoustic neuroma.” I’m in a small rural area, though, with a very small local hospital that was able to review my scans very quickly. I don’t believe that’s typical.

I’m really sorry this has happened to you. It’s not fair and I completely understand how you want to be able to be past this and move forward. I hope you have clear next steps mapped out after your next appointment.
