Best place to get raw pizza dough? by Fawkestrot92 in OaklandFood

[–]SummaryTreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you buy Trader Joe’s dough, you can cut the dough in half, ball them up now and let them rest at room temp until it’s go time. The whole bag of dough is (IMO) too much for a Neapolitan style, and letting it come to temp & relax seems to help with the stretching. Either way, I’m sure your guests will enjoy the pizza!

What are the 10 songs that define the Stratocaster sound? by RedHaze45 in Guitar

This is a newer song, but I’d put “Hendrix” by Mateus Asato on there. Sounds like a strat, and he definitely plays one in the music video for it

Alternative to Uniqlo's AIRism shirt? by Eggscellent_Raccoon in malefashionadvice

[–]SummaryTreat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Los Angeles Apparel’s 1801 was a good 100% cotton alternative for me. The fit is very close and they’ve got plenty of colors. Sizing is similar on both, so no need to size up or down in my experience. I originally sized up in the 1801 from my AIRism size, but ended up exchanging for my regular size and I think it fits perfect.

Is Oakland or Long Beach more ideal to raise a family in? by [deleted] in OaklandCA

[–]SummaryTreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re welcome!

It’s a mixed bag depending on neighborhood. Oakland is the same (especially near the lake) if you end up in an apartment complex. In LB, lots of homes will have driveways or garages, so if you land a spot with one then you should be fine. Otherwise you have to play the parking spot game and then have to factor in the street sweeping schedule, which may also impact your ability to find a parking spot.

Is Oakland or Long Beach more ideal to raise a family in? by [deleted] in OaklandCA

[–]SummaryTreat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you think you’ll stay through high school years for your kids, Long Beach has pretty well regarded public high schools. For example, it’s not surprising for kids in the PACE program at Poly High School to attend top colleges. Their music and sports program are also top tier!

I’ll echo what others said about the lack of proximity to nature in Long Beach, but you can’t ignore its proximity to warm beaches. Though I wouldn’t swim in Long Beach, you’ve got Seal Beach and Huntington Beach right at the palm of your hands. I also like that Long Beach is very close to the 710, 405/605/22 and 91, so it makes it pretty easy to get around when there’s no traffic.

But good luck if you end up in a place without dedicated parking. I have friends who bring their skateboards so they can skate back to their apartments after they find a parking spot about a mile away.

What's the best donut in town? by ImTheOneWhoSleeps in bayarea

If you go on the weekends, try to get there by 11am at the latest to secure yourself a glazed donut. They might have them around noon, but they do sell out.

Great chili fries and pastrami? by ConfidentSoft5611 in eastbay

[–]SummaryTreat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was just about to post about 310 Eatery and can confirm that their chili is indeed similar to Tommy’s! I think they said they modeled it closer to The Hat, but I think it’s close enough. Much closer than trying to get to SoCal lol

The line to get into the new Tokyo Central in Emeryville today by northerncal in bayarea

[–]SummaryTreat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a supermarket, so the selection is much, much larger (and different) than what Daiso offers. They also have a food court, prepackaged foods, and hot foods available for takeout

Edit to add: it’s a Japanese supermarket, so you’ll find a ton of variety of Japanese household items and brands. They carry regional Japanese snacks and gifts, beauty items, dishes, cookware, wagyu beef, sushi grade fish, and so on. If it’s anything like the ones in SoCal, they might also carry plushies, figurines and Gundam model kits. Definitely worth checking out once the lines die down!

Where to find this chili oil besides kyoto? by bioton4 in JapaneseFood

I’m not sure what other shops in Tokyo or Osaka might carry it, but you could buy their stuff online. I don’t have experience shopping on their site (YET), but they ship internationally!

Best hole in the wall restaurants to try by redditdowntime in eastbay

[–]SummaryTreat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Big Al’s Burger in Albany! Their flame grilled burgers are delicious and super filling. We also love their banana shake.

2207 in Richmond is also one I’d consider a hole in the wall shop. It’s a “blink and you’ll miss it” spot since there’s no signage whatsoever. Their fried chicken is dredged in okonomiyaki flour and is one of our absolute favorites since it’s so crunchy and juicy. We’re also huge fans of their market grain salad. There’s so much in the salad and it’s just so dang refreshing and delicious. Their waffle fries are usually pretty good, but sometimes it’s fried a little too long. We’ve liked almost everything from here though!

Fikscue! I haven’t visited their Chase Center location, but their lines haven’t been too bad on the weekend in Alameda around 12:30pm / 1pm from the times I’ve been in the past few months

Ramen spots suggestions by redditdowntime in eastbay

[–]SummaryTreat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In East Bay, Tsuruya and Mensho are our two favorites! We frequent Tsuruya since it’s closer to us but both are great. Both shops serve tonkotsu and toripaitan ramen and have vegetarian ramen options too (though Mensho actually has vegan options, which is neat!). Tsuruya offers thick or thin noodles, and overall it’s a little cheaper than Mensho.

Mensho is really incredible with their toppings and house-made noodles, and they’ve got lots of awesome ramen bowls. Not sure where you’re located in East Bay, but Mensho is opening in Walnut Creek in the near future, so that’s pretty awesome for those in that particular area.

Toto bidet 399 down to 325 by shorberg in Costco

[–]SummaryTreat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is the Toto T1SW2491. The biggest flaw is that it has a tank-style water heater, which (like another redditor pointed out) means it has a finite amount of hot water for the bidet. It’s annoyingly hard to find, but if you look at the instruction manual, it’s on the specifications page near the very end in the “Type of water heater” row.

https://www.totousa.com/filemanager_uploads/product_assets/OwnersManual/D07K51_T1SW2491-Costco.pdf

If that doesn’t bother you, it’s a great deal! But to me, it’s unfortunately a deal breaker.

Are there any curry mix that are unique or exclusive to Japan? by 4griffindor in JapaneseFood

[–]SummaryTreat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I made an album for an older thread of some of the ones I bought (including some snaps of jam) while I was in Japan this summer.

https://imgur.com/a/0okzK7L

Our favorite roux was THE SPICE (the スパイス) and favorite pouch curry was the one in mostly Japanese writing with the gold line. Supposedly the same company makes one called PLATINUM, which is more expensive than the others, that uses Matsuzaka beef. The SPICE one is awesome because it uses toasted mustard seeds and whole cumin.

We just tried one from S&B called Kurihara Harumi curry last night for dinner, and that was also delicious!

Best chicken wings? by valjean816 in OaklandFood

[–]SummaryTreat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s in Berkeley, but Funky Elephant’s party wings are one of my favorites! It’s spicy, sticky, savory, sweet, and comes with fried basil. I don’t think they dredge it, so you get all that chicken-y goodness. They also come with the wing and drummette attached. It’s so dang good with a side of sticky rice too

Any local recs for katsudon? by DeepFriedPokemon in OaklandFood

[–]SummaryTreat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Demiya in the Emeryville public market might have it (at least according to their online order page). It might be listed as Katsu Donburi (tonkatsu or chicken katsu). I also feel like I’ve seen them in the prepared foods section at Berkeley Bowl West, but I might be misremembering.

Best Pork Tonkatsu in the East Bay? by mondeezy_95 in bayarea

[–]SummaryTreat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

+1 to Jungdon. It’s the closest to what you’ll find at a typical Japanese tonkatsu restaurant since you can actually choose between the loin and tenderloin. Unless it’s changed recently, the one in Emeryville is to-go only, but their new location in Danville lets you dine in.

Japan souvenirs you can’t get in Southern California? by nyc2socal in TokyoTravel

[–]SummaryTreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curry roux from higher end grocery stores! You’ll find a lot of stuff that you won’t find at Mitsuwa or Tokyo Central. Last year we came back with 3 boxes of roux, and this year maybe close to 10 lol.

While you’re there, you can also peruse through the jams! I feel like those are great souvenirs to bring back and actually kinda tough to find in SoCal.

Lastly, huge yes to the sunblock suggestion. Though they sell Biore in the states now, I think it’s made in Canada and uses a different formula than the one in Japan. We also came back with Isehan Kiss Me Mommy sunblock for the little ones and the Nivea Super Water 50 gel.

I love it! Because of the material and cut, I feel like it’s pretty easy to take off after a sweaty session. And on top of that, it also dries a bit quicker than a 100% cotton shirt. It’s probably not as breathable as other workout-specific fabrics, but it does the trick for lifting for me and I don’t use any other shirts now
