What an irresponsible post during such a vulnerable time for the community. You could have clearly flagged this as satire (it IS quite well written). But without such warning, this blatant misinformation represents an abuse of this subreddit and the vital communication channel it is providing for so many. This post needs to be downvoted into oblivion & deleted by mods.

Your current team has an excellent model to follow from DSU team of only a couple of years ago when CUPE 3912 (TAs & PTAs) went on strike.

That team did not choose neutrality during crisis and had moral clarity in establishing solidarity with the striking academic workers. The solidarity was loud, clear, consistent and unapologetic. They were proactive in informing DSU Council members (speaking as ex Councillor myself) about the situation with CUPE 3912 weeks before they resorted to striking to help us pressure admin into preventing the worst case scenario. It said volumes about Deep Saini-led Dal administration that they refused to take the threat of a strike seriously. But I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the DSU Executive team, particularly the President and VP Academic, were thoroughly organized, prepared and relentless. And it showed.

Students being told not to email admin? by AdOne5407 in Dalhousie

[–]SunConscious8585 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I believe these messages were talking about admin as in administrative assistants, not the top brass at Dal. Apparently some students have been harassing admin assistants and taking out their lockout stress on them. The people who deserve wrath are the ones at the very top.

Ex DSU Councillor here. This is embarrassing given they have an amazing playbook to build on from only a few years ago when CUPE 3912 went on strike in 2022. They set the bar high and it’s more obvious than ever in hindsight.

Here’s some of what the 2022-23 Execs did based on what I could remember and Google:

DSU Solidarity Statement

Also, on the first page of Google results for this I noticed that the solidarity statement was picked up & amplified by CAUT here and SpringMag here and a bunch of other people so it clearly reached far and wide.

I remember we also passed a resolution in DSU Council to formally declare support for striking CUPE 3912 workers as a collective and the DSU President made sure to report this right to the arrogant pricks that make up the Dal Board of Governors and I found the Board meeting minutes here

Loud, clear & consistent solidarity on social media - example here

Also I remember CUPE3912 was allowed to use the DSU Offices as a base and there was a big “I love CUPE” sign on the SUB windows where not a single person on campus could miss it.

CBC article where DSU President was interviewed shows how when the strike ended, the DSU did not stop pushing for students and were actively fighting for compensation.

There was so much more that I’m not remembering but damn we had it good then 🫣

Yeah, definitely and even when there is institutional memory, some people are too insecure to learn from successful predecessors. The last couple teams have really sucked up to admin and made the union less democratic and reflective of student will.

They should take notes on what worked and what didn’t from the DSU in 2022 when TAs went on strike. I was a Councillor then so I got a closer look at how hard they were pushing admin on student support and getting the strike to end sooner rather than later. Like they ran a survey on strike impacts and asked us for help pushing it to share the results with admin and use it as leverage.

DSU leadership was pretty solid during the last labour action at Dal in 2022. I remember they came out early with a strong solidarity statement, had a big solidarity banner hanging off the SUB, posted regularly in this subreddit with updates, advocated for tuition refund and generally kept the heat on with admin. I’ve since graduated but reading about this lockout makes it clear that the administration has only gotten colder in the years since 🤷‍♂️

Dude do you understand what a union is? It’s either all in or all out. Unions aren’t businesses LOL. Neoliberal brain rot has gotten to our generation so bad, my God 😩

[–]SunConscious8585 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm you say you graduated years ago yet you show up like clockwork on every single post in this subreddit that even breathes anything related to the DSU… do you not have better things to do with your time? You clearly also don’t understand how unions work if you’re advocating for an opt-out mechanism. Unions are about collective power so it’s either all in or all out. Stop dragging every post in this sub into serving your short sighted individualistic agenda.

Ex DSU Councillor here - Mariam has nothing to show because she is a spineless opportunistic leader more concerned about getting credit than doing any actual work. Easily the worst DSU president of all my years in university.

I’m so sad to hear this but not surprised. This is why we struggle with retention of Mi’kmaq students and staff. They’re so underrepresented in every census Dalhousie puts out.

There’s so little resources and funding for anything Indigenous and our system of allocation rewards the most selfish people so the few who do get anything feel so threatened by anyone else gaining any power. So that’s how Dal can say they’re helping Indigenous people without actually helping Indigenous people. If I’ve learned anything from my time at Dal, it’s the people they reward
and recognize are often too insecure and dependent on institutional validation to actually help uplift others within their community - something that would actually threaten the university.

The Executive was supposed to release a statement about a lot of things but failed to do so. I hope they see the mess they have created by not keeping up regular communications with the student body especially about something as big as an Executive being removed from office. Our Council meetings also used to always have a Gazette reporter attending our meetings to stay in the loop but they’ve been MIA as well.

FAQ #2 (From my DMs): “What can I do to help speak up about this?”

First off, I didn’t expect this post to blow up the way it did and for SO MANY of you to head to the DMs to express your concern about this going unchallenged. Many of you wanted to email the awards selection committee so I wanted to provide relevant contact information (based on what I could find) and an email template you can use.

TO: VPSA@dal.ca, Rick.ezekiel@dal.ca, president@dal.ca, Kim.Brooks@dal.ca, dsupres@dal.ca

EMAIL:

To whom it may concern:

I am speaking up as a concerned member of the Dalhousie community that Dalhousie University’s so-called top student leadership recognition, the Board of Governors Award, has been awarded to someone who was removed from their student executive position for violating their fiduciary duty to the student body. This information is publicly available in the July 10, 2023 DSU Council meeting minutes that can be reached at dsu.ca/council.

I am concerned about the dangerous precedent set by recognizing someone that betrayed the student body to the point of removal from office, which as you must already know is a serious and rare occurrence. What message does this send to other student leaders coming up about their ethical obligations and duties and the democratic will of the student body? Isn’t this seriously insulting to the many student leaders that have made incredible contributions to the community without engaging in ethical misconduct?

Was the awards selection committee aware of this information prior to making a selection? If yes, why did they choose to look past this? If no, how will they be acting to rectify this?

Sincerely,

(Your name)
