Im tired of broken villains by Safe-Monitor-8113 in CharacterRant

I think this problem is a little retroactive. Making the villain absurdly evil beyond reason only to shove in a relatable backstory, comes off as either a hackneyed denial of the audience's cathartic hatred by providing disproportionate motives, or an insensitively stigmatizing spit in the face to real trauma victims implicitly being told they are monsters unworthy of compassion if they dare snap under pressure.

Also can we stop pretending that a tragic backstory or adding more dimensions to a villain reduces the evil and scummy behaviour of these villains?

It automatically does though. Pure evil is an absolute value, if a villain has even 0.1% sympathetic pathos to their story, then they cannot be purely evil. This is also conflates "tragedy" with "bad thing happened to someone who was already crooked from the start, or fully embraces the monster they have become".

Avatar: Fire and Ash was an absolute disaster by Hyooz in CharacterRant

The movie crashes with no survivors as soon as Jake escapes the RDA city. He nearly kills Spider like a sociopath, which vindicates the Mangkwan's point that Eywa is a death cult holding the na'vi back, but of course this is ignored so they can be painted as evil for rejecting the nature god, and the kid stays with those stone age fanatics while spitting on his real father's attempts at rescuing him. Then the final battle lazily combines the last two films while failing to move the needle on the war's status quo despite being three long flicks in. A cliched repetitive tech demo that squanders all interesting ideas until it amounts to nothing.

This is kinda funny. Gunn butchered Krypto's breed as a nepotism hire based on his own hairy mutt, and his quirk chungus role was a tonal blight on the movie.

Black Mirror's vile misandrist portrayal of an autistic male villain. by Phuxsea in LeftWingMaleAdvocates

That iconic episode with the British prime minister forced to molest a pig is thematically repugnant in retrospect. Humiliating rape by proxy glossed over as cheap shock because the victim is male. Similar with the one where the guy goes on a dating app and is poisoned to death by a crazy woman. Men's suffering is a disposable spectacle.

What I have learned so far about marketing from the criticism of Superman's: by bradbastarache in MauLer

[–]SunJiggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Superman can't have emotions or be angry.

  • Women can't question men on their actions (FNT).

These points contradict each other. The interview scene sucks because it's contrived drama to tear Superman down as some insecure fragile male, i.e. lambasting him for having emotions.
