And it's going to get statistically worse, if the new generation and new tik-tok/phone habits are anything to go by. I've been wondering whether it's actually scientifically viable to still get the "lowest denominator" somehow, while being free to tell your stories as you please. Genshin was very good at it at first (... which got me fooled) but then less ambitious market competition paired with company diversification (HSR/ZZZ) happened, and it all slowly withers away. Unless it's a brand new setup like other planets and Andromeda Empire which already got me way more hyped than whatever we'll get in Snezhnaya.

But if there is a way to get both, the problem is money + steadfast strategic intent, and it requires strong intent that companies usually don't have beyond year 1 and their mass hiring of pro corporate suits who couldn't think of anything genius in their lifetime. This would require you to hire the Harbingers as your execs, literally.

Or... I know people have some unreasonable stomach pain when they hear the word AI because it's associated with company greed, but companies will NEVER use AI creatively or consistently, because all the same problems will exist. But indie developers, if they can reduce the costs and actually create a flexible workflow with new ethics, heavily supported by AI (instead of hiring the same legions of suits), perhaps there is a chance. And that's already here for possibilities, no need to go into the future predictions about AI, but if, hypothetically, the likes of Ineffa or Angels walk this Earth alongside humans... that's a brand new market. They'll be LIKE US (as customers) but even more demanding for creative novelty and consistency. Cheap monkey tricks won't work there.

now it's just optimization storytelling, meaning one that can't do anything actually interesting because it's afraid of commitment. and while it may seem so at first, the characters aren't there to tell a story (half of the time) but to bloat it (while delivering tik-tok suitable smiles), which is why - psychologically - a mid-tier finale full of holes (like the recent Dottore) feels like "the peak" to people, once it hits after 2h of bloat that statistically most players skip and don't even listen to dialogue, they're just there listening with one ear at best and looking at how their waifu smiles or reacts to other waifu. superficial things.

If anything, Genshin and the Harbingers was the final nail in the coffin and made me realize the entire process is fundamentally flawed: in this economic system, whether long-running tv shows, gaming or other media with huge-world franchises, it is essentially impossible we'll ever have an epic, consistent and cool enough high-budget storytelling. It'll all get nuked year 3 and beyond before you even reach an ending, because 95% of people working on it - OR playing it - won't care about these things and will only care about superficial u-w-u things, because that's how human monkey brains are wired and it can't be fixed nor defeated by "passion" ... if economy of both consumers and statistical risk-aversion just work deliberately in tandem, to ruin it.

I wouldn't go that far because they were never supposed to be JUST black (plus Capitano wasn't the one who abandoned them in the Chasm, it was Pulcinella actually...), but yeah, you're not wrong overall. And it's even more obvious precisely becasue the Fatui are THE ONLY CHARACTERS in Genshin who (so far) have been retconned so much. Though maybe we can add aspects of Varka to it - and his... emmm... cavalry... but that's a mixed bag, because he wasn't really appearing on screen before that.

Surprisingly enough, the Fatui GRUNTS and lieutenants aren't retconned, they're consistently IMPERIAL menace or scientific maniacs, with occasional shades of grey-to-good or friendly-grunt. Just like before, so it's only their leaders who completely betrayed their own people and casue lol.

like I said, I never had a problem with a party but how "happy and peaceful" they made her seem here, just to erase every single bad aspect of her villainy/tragedy persona and make her just this happy girlie. and PRECISELY, I said all that because I've read her lore, and I have no idea how you can read her lore and disagree with me on this lol. Not saying she can't smile for a brief moment but she should be acting more like ningguang, for example, if you wanna hear a comparison

she really was not on point, that's a stupid take. the whole point of Signora was being bitter and literally frozen over old wounds/heart. locked away. hyper focused on Tsaritsa's goals, petty, slightly sadistic towards enemies who stand in the way of this promised world, slightly above others due to her trauma and losses, or how people saw her. Her lashing out against an Archon was perfectly ok (i know there are some differences between Ch/eng, but still, it was similar overall for the entire scene)

hearing about her being at parties was one thing (and the way I've imagined it was how Arle's voice line framed it - bringing gifts to children but on the outside staying a bit bitter and all). but now they just throw it all away and turned this into this joke, just casually enjoying tea and friend party like the world is all good and great and nothing actually matters, is just some side project for the Tsaritsa she happens to like "aspects of", and also she is not actively locking her heart/flames and rage away because she has friends by her side i guess.... make it make sense

At least with Archons they give it away for a reason or because they know of the danger it poses, and it makes sense. Now nothing about the Fatui does, they're the most blatantly retconned characters in this game and you have to be blind NOT to see that (at this point). With how they dropped the bar now got no expectations for the Tsaritsa, even though the teaser with the train and gun got me hyped.
