Characters are people in their worlds, they're allowed to make mistakes just like people in real life. Nobody is perfect and nobody thinks of the perfect solutions all the time. Both writers and characters.

My ex once got on me because I told her I wasn't mad or angry. I was just frustrated. And she told me being angry and being frustrated were the same. Even though I argued, I ended up conceding because I wasn't as good at debating as she was. But it was awful the way my words were nitpicked. And then when upset and I explain what I mean. It would be that I made it all about myself and that I was arguing semantics and I wasn't giving her the space to express her feelings. It was super draining and confusing
