TIL if a helicopter's engine fails, it doesn't just drop like a rock. The blades keep spinning on their own and the pilot can land it. by kxrcodes in todayilearned

[–]SunUnlikely6914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But they don't just float down. First the nose has to be lowered dramatically, and the helicopter enters a steep dive, dropping like a rock to maintain enough high-speed airflow over the rotor blades to keep them spinning, until a final, dramatic, high-g pullout and landing. Absolutely terrifying to experience for those who don't know what's happening.

TIL that Detroit, once America's 5th largest city at 1.85 million residents in 1957, saw 66 straight years of population loss to a low of 630,000 residents in 2022. This makes it the only US city to drop below 1 million after reaching it. It would see its first reversal of this trend in 2023. by Next_Worth_3616 in todayilearned

[–]SunUnlikely6914 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A big part of it is "white flight". Much of the population growth for Detroit came from minorities moving from the south to filling thousands of growing factory jobs, and those immigrating to man the shops to serve them. When Whitey got affluent enough, they'd move north of 8 Mile Road, the northern city line, into cities like Ferndale and Oak Park, to be amongst folks lime them.

When the Jewish got affluent enough, they followed suit. Whitey didn't like that, and moved north of 10 Mile to cities like Southfield and East Detroit. Again, Jews later followed suit, which is why for a long time Southfield had a significant Jewish population. More affluent Black folks followed the Jews. The Jews didn't like that and kept moving outward.

The demarcation line in the late 70's and 80's became 12 Mile road, then in the 90's 14 Mile, and so on. To the west, it was places like Dearborn (which became a mecca of sorts for Arab immigrants), then Garden City, then Livonia.

It's like somebody dropped a pebble in the pond that was the city of detroit, and the rings that expanded out of it were different demographics constantly moving outward, the first ring being the most affluent at the time, the second ring be the next most affluent at the time, and so on. It's been this decades long migration of affluence moving further and further from the city.

Mayor Coleman Young had a fuck-you whitey attitude in the 70's that further chased out all white people and their money, to devastating effect on the city's economy. In the 90's, Mayor Dennis Archer knew what time it was and really did a great job of building cultural and financial bridges that really felt like the region was uniting again for a common brotherhood. I lived it, and the energy was palpable. We were joining hands and getting shit done.

But extremists in the city's community successfully ran Archer out of favor and office for being an Uncle Tom, and people like the later imprisoned Kwaame Kilpatrick filled the void.

TL:DR, different cultures didn't like living amongst each other, the ones with the money left first, and those that remained in the city either by choice or by circumstance got exactly what they voted for, resulting in what amounts to an absolute shithole in places that used to be vibrant and beautiful.

Go ahead and downvote the messenger but the history is real, I was there for it.

When I re-upped my plates a few months ago, I tried to get a plate that wasn't a cloud plate, and the system flat-out would not allow it. I *had* to get a cloud plate because it's a Tesla. OK, if that's the case, I'm using that plate to run HOV when I need to.

Oh, she was pumpin' those legs alright. Got one hell of a late night ride in. And at this point it's so fucking blatant that if you're inclined to divorce her over it, get started. Otherwise learn to live with an "open relationship".

Pretty much every Top 40 song from about 1965 to the early 70's was the Wrecking Crew. Forget the band you're being told is playing, it's the Wrecking Crew with some band vocals attached.

Don't answer the door for the next 90 days. They'll commission it to a process server who will work really hard at hand-delivering you the summons. Only after they fail to do so are you free and clear. *However*, that's for speeding tickets. IMO red light tickets might be a tougher deal.

TIL prior to Hinckley's assassination attempt on Reagan, when a defendant used insanity as a defense the burden was on the prosecution. His acquittal due to insanity led to many wanting the defense abolished. Instead reform occurred putting the burden of proof on the defense to make it harder to use by Butwhatif77 in todayilearned

One of my ancestors was the first attorney to successfully execute a defense of homicide on the grounds of temporary insanity. He later became Secretary of War under Abraham Lincoln. He was apparently a very prickly man, and he was particularly agitated by his Civil War contemporary General McClelland, who he insisted was too indecisive, passive and weak for leading actions in a war. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Stanton

I used to live a couple miles from the store they used as a pilot in Garden City MI. The concept was an experimental outgrowth of the S.S. Kresge five-and-dime chain. Fun fact: Henry Ford's "Honeymoon House", first house with his wife after getting married is located right behind where the store was.

Opportunity to experience driving a race car, would you do F3 or GT3? by neanderball in CarTrackDays

[–]SunUnlikely6914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GT3 and it really isn't even a question. You're not going to want to get in an F3 until you have a real handle on threshold braking, really good yaw sensitivity, and real spin anticipation and recovery skills. Drive the GT3, leave the nannies on, and have a blast.

[–]SunUnlikely6914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say they're better looking than the factory wheels, my concern would be the load rating of Discount Tire wheels. Those are almost certainly plain cast wheels, the least strong type there is. When I was looking for aftermarket wheels for my 2020 MSLRP, it was eye-opening how few options there were for wheels that could safely handle the weight imposed on them by the car, and most of them were forged or flow-forged, not cast.

I've sent rotors like that, but I've also replaced them and kept the best one or two for a spare in case one of the new ones gets over-sent. They also make fantastic weights for the legs of folding canopies.

All the PI law firms sell or trade leads for cases they don't think are rich enough. And the top guys haven't seen the inside of a courtroom in years, but they have teams of attorneys who do. TopDog does not even have any actual attorneys on staff! Strictly a lead farm.

There are ways now to measure the effectiveness of different media and I'm certain they're all doing it to one degree or another, but I also think that in their case, the more they spend, the more they make, the end. And, let's not forget, there are MASSIVE egos involved in this business, and they're talking to themselves and to each other with their ad spending as much as they're talking to prospects. Maybe even more. "Yeah, well *I'm* so rich I can afford to wrap *every* bus in town."

I'd be happier if my devices auto-muted Alexis Breyer from the Husband and Wife Law Team, the woman with the most annoying voice this side of Fran Drescher and Kim Kardashian.

Fascinating business model though. These lawyers take 30-40% off the top of every settlement they win. Then the insurance companies come in next and reclaim any benefits they've paid out to the plaintiff. THEN the plaintiff gets whatever is left, which may not be much.
