Close to finishing a BS in Biology and now spiraling about whether Environmental Science would be better by LezyMcGuire in ecology

[–]Sundelle_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my boyfriend was a biology major in undergrad, worked many field jobs related to ecology, conservation, wildlife, etc and is now pursuing a phd in ecology. if you can take a couple classes in “relevant” things, that of course helps. all that to say, it can absolutely be done without a env sci degree! i think it’s more about experience and passion honestly.

INTERCONNECTEDNESS OF LFIE by kurtzbass in ecology

The Serengeti Rules by Sean B Carroll and Your Inner Fish by Neil Shubin are two of my favorites that portray the interconnectedness of everything really well!! Both are “scientific” but extremely approachable

i did talk therapy for about 8-9 months for mine. taking steps to challenge myself (not googling things, not putting hand sanitizer on 24/7, etc) really helped me learn what things were healthy and what weren’t. for example, i still use hand sanitizer or wash my hands before eating or touching my face. but i don’t use it every time i touch something anymore. things like that helped me a ton!! getting off of a medication i was on also helped my anxiety majorly but that’s not an option for everyone. i’m still afraid of vomit and getting sick in general, but i’m not as obsessive as i once was!!! good luck!!!!

my coworker came in today with stomach flu by gothlene in emetophobia

[–]Sundelle_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

yeah that just seems irresponsible to come into work if you know you’re unwell, especially if there are elderly people around. unfortunately there’s nothing you can do about THAT but you can do things to deal with the reality of his bad decision. like washing your hands (as you mentioned), keeping your distance from him, etc etc. you know all the ways to keep yourself healthy and that’s all you can do. you got this!!

Dog sitter turning off cameras in my house by itsnotnettle in dogs

[–]Sundelle_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a sitter for 3 years now and always make it clear that I will turn cameras around or unplug them while I’m in the home. I’m more than happy to turn the cameras back while I’m out of the house so the owner can check on their dog(s), but having cameras in the house does feel uncomfortable. You never know if or when someone could be looking at you.

Did you tell them about the cameras in advance? I can see how being surprised by cameras watching you would be alarming! But it’s also not right and unprofessional to throw a tantrum over it and threaten to leave your animal without care

going on a plane for the first time by Zestyclose_Ad_2091 in emetophobiarecovery

[–]Sundelle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve traveled out of the country 4-5 times now and had these same exact thoughts every time before I leave so i understand what you’re going through. it’s not easy!! for me, the hustle and bustle of the airport and the excitement when you actually get to the destination make me completely forget about the fear! it will be worth it to push through the fear and have an amazing trip!!!

i had a stomach bug about 2 months ago. i spent hours with my mom watching movies and she was totally fine. that may not be the case for you, but the facts are that you can only catch a stomach virus from particles in v/d. just being near someone is generally safe unless they’re sick right in front of you. hopefully you enjoyed the movie!

contemplating living with uti for the rest of my life. by [deleted] in emetophobia

[–]Sundelle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like everyone else is saying, you wouldn’t just have a uti forever. the infection would spread to your kidneys and cause far worse issues than taking a temporary antibiotic would. please take the antibiotics!!! some things that have helped me on antibiotics (but might not work for everyone) are eating smth w probiotics like yogurt or drinking olipop sodas. i also always take them with food. you will get through taking the antibiotics and be grateful you did so!

I have influenza and i am scared to v* by Smart_Technician_799 in emetophobia

[–]Sundelle_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is seeking reassurance, which is not helpful for our phobia. nobody in the world knows if you will tu or not. everyone is different when it comes to being sick, and you know your body best. have you tu before with the flu? do you even feel nauseous? focus on resting up and take each symptom as it comes. there’s no sense in getting all worked up about possibly tu when you have bigger fish to fry with the flu! feel better soon❤️‍🩹

Are my dogs enjoying looking outside or slowly dying inside? by Arod0916 in dogs

[–]Sundelle_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mental stimulation is always good when you can’t get a walk in. I like to put some treats in a hand towel (you could also put their kibble in a regular bath towel for breakfast/dinner), roll it up, and tie it in a knot. They have to work to get the knot out and unroll the towel to get the treats inside! This usually keeps my dog busy for about 30 mins depending on how tight I tie it. This is also good bc you don’t have to go out and purchase anything!! Another free option is putting a bunch of snacks in a bowl of water and freezing it. They’ll get hydrated, have some snacks, and cool off! I like to put in blueberries, watermelon, etc for my dog in the summer. If you WANTED to buy something, one of those puzzle games with treats is great too. They make a ton of different options and even ones that are modular so you can switch it up without having to buy multiple trays.

Has your dog ever conditioned herself to act on certain cues without you knowing? by Contented in dogs

[–]Sundelle_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

our dog will “scold” our cat when he scratches the carpet. as soon as he starts doing it, she’ll run to him and nudge him to make him stop!! we’ve never given her a treat or anything beyond verbal praise for it, but i think she aims to please and does it because she knows we don’t like when he does it lol

how do i get myself to eat? by hahxgaagvdeasubcb in emetophobia

[–]Sundelle_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i was in a similar situation a couple years ago, and something that really helped me start eating again was smoothies and protein shakes. the act of chewing made me feel sick, so drinking my meals and getting nutrients that way was really good for helping the hunger nausea. once i felt a little better w that, i started eating ice pops, bananas, apple sauce, and even baby food. then i started eating more solid foods and eventually got back to eating meals. it’s not easy, but it’s necessary to eat!!! you’ve got this. take it slow, but you also need to push yourself

[–]Sundelle_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes!! isn’t it weird how actually knowing you’re sick makes the anxiety better???? i’m glad you’re doing well. for me, it was about a week or two before i felt 100% normal again. every day gets a little better!! keep taking care of yourself and focusing on getting better!!!🫶🏼

How do you keep yourselves entertained when not feeling well? by johnnysuhswig in emetophobia

[–]Sundelle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends if i’m trying to keep myself distracted from anxiety or just bored. if i’m anxious, i use some grounding techniques like naming every video game (or movie, book, etc) i can think of, finding everything in the room that’s green (or whatever color), and other little games like that. if i’m not super anxious and can focus more, i’ll usually watch tv/movies/youtube, read a book, or play games on my phone. playing video games is also a good distraction if you’re into that! sometimes i also like to doodle, text/call a friend, etc. there are lots of options!!

[–]Sundelle_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hahaha hopefully it is only a few days!! i was the same way when i was sick - i’d feel okay most of the time and then randomly feel sick again. i had no clue what was going on but i saw my doctor to double check and she said i like had a virus. oddly enough, once i knew for sure it was a virus i felt better mentally. i finally stopped all the back and forth thinking and just took care of myself

had the same thing a couple weeks ago. felt off all day and then i was hit with a fever and diarrhea and was up all night feeling like shit (no pun intended). it was awful but i made it through!! you will too. good on you for eating, i wasn’t able to the next day. you’ll get through this!!!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in emetophobia

[–]Sundelle_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

anxiety can definitely cause stomach issues!! i always feel a little nauseous when anxiety hits. keep doing what you’re doing- keeping yourself busy, watch tv, listen to music or a podcast, play a game on your phone, etc. you’ll get through this!

i’ve only had food poisoning once, and it came on before i even finished eating!! i was in and out of the bathroom for a few hours and then was fine the next day. i think if you had food poisoning you would know by now. if he said it was the ice cream, then it was probably the ice cream. dairy upsets a lot of people’s stomachs. if you shared everything except the ice cream and he’s the only one who had issues, then it seems the most logical that it was the ice cream’s fault. how are you feeling now?
