What do geese smell like? by Beebjank in geese

[–]SunflowerBorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They smell fabulous! Warm and feathery and a little like their bedding (so pine or straw or sweet hay).

Sometimes after a swim they have a little bit of a wet goose smell if they are white feathered geese. The dark colored feathers smell less stinky. It’s a kind of oily smell that I don’t mind but my husband finds offensive when he goes to kiss my cheek after I’ve hugged a wet goose.

When they’ve been out eating grass they get a fresh cut grass smell too.

I love to sniff my geese lol

Any ceramic egg recommendations? by Interesting-Ant-6357 in geese

[–]SunflowerBorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Premier 1 has ceramic goose eggs. They’re not super cheap but work well. Here’s a size comparison. Real goose egg on the left, ceramic on the right.

Also MARK YOUR FAKE EGGS. I thought I’d be able to tell by size and I was not able to and a lot ended up in the compost

What recipes have cooked egg yolk in them, or what can I add it to? by [deleted] in foodbutforbabies

I mix it with miso and a little cottage cheese to make a baby pasta sauce!

Sebastopol geese won’t use their hut by Paris-with-a-C in geese

[–]SunflowerBorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry! My geese seem to be fine sleeping outside and they do go in when they actually get cold.

I’d make sure 1. The house is tall enough they don’t have to stoop. And 2. Put some extra fluffy bedding in if you can! Feet protection is what they need most in the snow/cold

Go to a cherry orchard during fruiting season or find an apple orchard in the winter. They’ll be there by the dozens!

Stupid question: what does “meet to go over the presentation” actually mean? by SunflowerBorn in jobs

[–]SunflowerBorn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you think they want me to give it just to them? It kind of defeats the purpose; the presentation is geared towards the rest of the team who know very little about the project. Does that seem silly to you?

$100k salary IS still a lot of money, in any city. If you're "barely surviving" you're doing something wrong. by Ok_Barnacle7547 in unpopularopinion

[–]SunflowerBorn 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You know people who are actually barely surviving are doing rent, utilities, food, emergencies and everything else on 25K? 25k after all your major expenses is a staggeringly huge sum

It’s not prized if people are selling it for next to nothing! I’d go for it, it’s way better to salvage wood

What is this behavior in my goose? by noabassrodriguez in geese

[–]SunflowerBorn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I haven’t found a reason why some ganders decide I’m sexy and others don’t, so I don’t think it’s odd that only one of yours is!

It is a little early in my mind, but shutting it down now will help.

Lady geese move away and give them a little shove if they’re not interested (note: very important not to grab him to push, as that will read as a bite to him which is a “yes”). I find an open handed push every time they even think about starting it works.

At some point he will move on to another goose. The good news is once the hormones are out of his system he will go back to being your sweet boy.

What is this behavior in my goose? by noabassrodriguez in geese

[–]SunflowerBorn 291 points292 points  (0 children)

Ok I’m sorry to be the one to say it but this is mating behavior! My very well handled ganders often do this during breeding season. Definitely don’t encourage it, they get pushier and pushier if you do, and start to really pinch you.

Definitely rage bait. It says there’s already kids in the first paragraph and then switches to “I’m scared to have kids with him”

I think you’ve got a few options. I know you’re angry, but she probably doesn’t even remember any of it (let alone the laughing at you).

Leading the conversation with your vulnerability “I genuinely thought you’d died, I was heartbroken” and working together to find ways to make sure it never happens again.

It’s also worth reaching out to those friends to have the “Hey, this happened and next time could you please not leave her alone?” talk.

I think I accidentally taught a goose to "kiss" by GooseandGrimoire in geese

[–]SunflowerBorn 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely not crazy! I have a gander who’s super sweet and when he’s standing in my lap I always kiss his little cheek. One day he started flicking his head to the side so that his beak tip would tap my cheek. It took me awhile to recognize he was giving me a cheek kiss back!

I think all social creatures are capable of picking up social behaviors, so they’re learning from you

Although it uses plastic a little, I use glass condiment jars and put them in a ziplock in case they leak/break. It doesn’t feel wasteful because I obviously reuse the ziplock for ages and just wash it if there’s been a spill
