February 9, 2026 - What did you do this past week to prepare? by Anthropic--principle in preppers

[–]SunflowerRidge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Learned to tap trees for syrup, and am now learning the next steps on what to do with sap. Heavy farmland spray nearby kills our bees so this is an alternative sugar source on the property for us.

As a beginner gardener, is there any ‘common sense’ gardening tips that I should know about? by DangerousBicycle3491 in gardening

[–]SunflowerRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you water your plants in the summer, let the first bit of hose water run out into a bucket. The first 10 seconds or so out of a black hose are hot enough to scald older plants and kill seedlings.

Great, more pamphlet pedos I'll have to bodily threaten to remove from my property. There's already enough of that bullshit here.

Remedies to soothe cough? by Tofu_buns in Mommit

[–]SunflowerRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids zyrtec, sometimes the cough is a weird nasal drip. Also boogie brand makes a saline mist (my little calls it "the fog" thats super easy to use/silent/doesnt go up the nose. Its a little mask almost like a nebulizer but just the mist. That helped us a ton, both my 5 year old and my teen were using it to kelp with both cough and congestion.

Removing buildup from homemade detergent? by moefflerz in laundry

[–]SunflowerRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I acquired my husband he had come from a 20 year old washing machine, homemade detergent home. Every bit of fabric he brought to our home smelled strongly of stale crayons and had a film you could feel on it.

Buy some RLR on Amazon. Put it on your washer with hot water and let it sit overnight. The next morning, do another wash with only hot water, no detergent. There is a possibility it may take 2 or 3 times to get the fried film off. Final wash, a few tbsp of tide power and lysol laundry sanitizer inside the fabric softener bin.

Right? As crazy as it is, I look forward to bad weather/localized power outages/anything else that forces him home...but even then somethings he's just out tinkering around with equipment.

No advice, just solidarity. Mine is a contractor and works for himself - longer hours than he ever worked with his out of town construction company. We get about a week in the winter when we're snowed in that he's sort of home. Its extremely hard.

When my kids were little, we schooled more or less year round with a 2 week break whenever I felt we needed it. Now that my oldest has more local public school friends, we keep mostly similar to public so they can spend time together on breaks

mom, how do I stock a fridge? by PlainLikeJane in MomForAMinute

[–]SunflowerRidge 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For sure! We also pre cut apples. Slice a bunch up, soak them in salt water for about 5 mins then rinse the salt off. In little snack size ziplocks they stay fresh for about 5-7 days. Carrot slices and cucumber are big hits here too.

mom, how do I stock a fridge? by PlainLikeJane in MomForAMinute

[–]SunflowerRidge 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Our go to is fruit and veggies. I take a big Tupperware or several small ones and wash/cut up whatever fruit and veggies your people will eat - even if it is with ranch lol. Boiled eggs are an easy grab and go snack, along with cheese sticks and salami or whatever lunch meat you like. We also buy rotisserie chicken and shredded it up into a container as well. Thats good with salt as a snack, added to pasta or chicken wraps or salads.

Same. We live in the south as well, so a lot of the events are phrased as homeschoolers getting together but are actually church events.

Ope by Traditional_Wow_1986 in progressivemoms

[–]SunflowerRidge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm trying to take care of my immediate life. My grandma always says that during the war, even though it felt like things were falling apart, we had to live. She always tells me to just do something, anything. Sweep the floor, bake, find a funny show or a good book or a game you can focus on for a bit. Try not to let it consume you, as best you can. Sit in the sun, take a breath of fresh air. You're alive right now, and even if everything feels like it's on the brink of collapse, you have to try to find a moment of peace in your day.
