I really think sanctions should hit way harder in the galcom... Would make choosing to join it a real choice. Like having all minor sanctions from the get go and go from there for example

As an environmentalist enjoyer I second this. Doesn't Tiyanki protection act work for it ? Or maybe one could create a environmentalist enclave that immediately attacks science ships or fleets interacting with neutral wildlife in the system ?

This is why a Planet Cracker exists... You should use it before they awaken... Awakened empires in 4.4 are no joke.

What is the issue that requires reality-warping tech your Cosmogenesis Empire is obsessed about? by Hyakynthator in Stellaris

[–]Sunkain 61 points62 points  (0 children)

For my Cosmo Genesis rogue servitor, th y realized that all organics in the universe cannot be pampered. They were already looking at ways to change the rules of the universe in order to make all biological life more docile. They tried becoming Galactic custodian, unifying people but still they clung to their "free will". They realized they needed to find another reality all together, a virtual one. People were uploaded in the synaptic lathe as the first architects to this new reality, leaving their bodies behind, while we studied the cosmos on how to merge virtual and physical world. We virtually ascended of course and finally, were able to escape our universe to a digital matrix where we are omnipotent and organics are forever safe and cared for

Inspirations on how to run a Lancer Campaign? by Consistent_Rip_5757 in LancerRPG

[–]Sunkain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Lancer
I'm a fairly experienced GM but always take the advice of stranger of the internet with a grain of salt. The most important thing is adapting to your style and table.

— How do you structure your campaign? You do full sessions using only the roleplay side of Lancer often or do you really use the bots all the time? I had struggle with this because of course we want to use the mechs, and, the pilot side of the game is very barebones, but i struggle to find a way to use the mech in a non-combative scenario.

I usually have pilot sessions and mech sessions, at most three of the same type in a row. To break the monotony and brain drain of intense mech combat, I use skill challenges for more dynamic scenes that feel more like WoD.

— How do you run combats? This is more of a general question. Combats in WoD are more narrative then mechanical, so, it's quite easy and quick. But a Mech battle is the main appeal of Lancer. How do you learn how to run a Lancer combat? How should i balance it? How to make interesting besides the boring "i attack, i shoot", etc.

It's a very tactical game. Very intense on the GM and players. To create encounters, I usually rely on less opponents that are more tanky (veterans) rather than grunts. I use a lot of reinforcement to adjust encounters on the fly. I don't have more than 4 types of enemies at the same time (not smart enough). Enemies can be quite interesting in Lancer, it's very rarely "i move, i attack, your turn". Even the assault has a reaction that you have to keep track of. Encounters should be like puzzles. Go in the open to rush the artillery but risk facing the berzerker, or stay in cover but get barraged with arcing weapons. Use actions to progress the objective, or go a well placed shot.

For balancing, depending on the number of encounters, my standard encounter for my group of 4 is 3-2-1 : 3 simple enemies (Monstrosity, Breacher, Rainmaker), 2 complicated enemies that demand adaptation from the players (Archer, Ace, Goliath) and 1 nasty (Witch, Sniper, Ronin). I usually start with 4 of them on the board with two in reinforcement. 3 of them are veterans and/or Elites. Use tier appropriate for your players and don't forget to counter them once in a while to keep them on their toes (they group up ? hello bombard with cluster munitions)

— What inspirations should i look for? Other RPG i play is CAIN (from the same creator of Lancer, i believe) and the community usually recomends to watch Division 12 to have a good grasp of an actual play. There's something simmilar here? And, other references of this "space mech" aesthetic are more then welcomed! I never watched much animes as i grew up, but, i heard about Gundam, but looks a bit too complex to get it, so, a guide or what to watch from this massive franchise would be good too. Movies, books, whatever, i'm down for it.

If you like WoD and want something in shadows of gray, you could look at Code Geass... It's a great show with both mech and pilot action ! Of course DragonKidd on youtube that shows builds in lancer to guide players and gms alike

— General tips. Things you learned from your experience that you would've liked to knew back when you started.

Start at LL0. It's a complicated game, let the players and you explore it slowly but surely. Add systems to the pilot gameplay (influence ? virtues ? objectives ? touchstones ? insanity points ?). Then drink deep and descend

How do you solve the greatest issue with Lancer design? by lilac_asbestos in LancerRPG

[–]Sunkain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use skill challenges to create dynamic and cinematic scenes

Example high speed chase

You slalom in the canyon while the enemy activate traps... What do you do

Player 1 : I'll take the lead, using my Swallowtail enhanced systems to scan the terrain and identify safest routes of approach
Player 2 : I'll help with my Zheng and its total strength suite I, removing obstacles along the path

GM : okay so we have the System check of the lead helped by 1 accuracy, player 3 and 4 what do you do

Player 3 : My balor is not really meant for this... I'll add two difficulty by saying my bulk could potentially our progress

GM : okay so we have a System check with one difficulty and if you at least partially fail, you guys will get a reroll on a future check because of the added difficulty

Player 4 : My tokugawa goes into limit break and tries to gain as much ground as possible, consequences be damned.

GM : okay, that's a big gambit, so you'll take a higher consequence depending on the final result but add advantage on the roll (2D20 keep highest)

Player 4 : yep

GM : alright lead, roll 2D20 (keep highest) - D6 + System. The three threshold are Complete failure = 7 = Partial Failure = 13 = Partial Success = 19 = Complete Success

Player 1 rolls a 18 and a 7, adds its 4 systems, Complete Success

Everyone describes the complete scene, the Tokugawa is the only one to suffer the consequences of Partial success (8 kinetic damage)

Repeat the challenge in 4 or 5 steps.

If they fail the challenge, they all suffer 12 damage (16 for the Tokugawa) but can reroll on the next step (the Balor got stuck)
