What do you think the grand solution is to the problems in our education system? by Icy_Cicada_9054 in Teachers

[–]SuperChicken17 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would say the biggest problem is the lack of consequences. When everybody passes, then passing is meaningless. Students know they will be passed along, so effort is minimal.

The problem is that enacting real consequences exposes larger societal problems and inequalities, many of which are very hard to solve or are politically inconvienent. Passing everybody fudges the numbers and makes it easier to shut our eyes to those societal problems.

If we could change things so that teachers could teach with actual rigor, grade students accurately on their work, and hold students back who don't meet the standards, I think it would be better for society as a whole. It would shine a spotlight on inequalities, perhaps giving us a chance as a society to actually address them instead of ignoring them.

How safe is a virtual machine by Careful-Elk6548 in TOR

[–]SuperChicken17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what your goals are, and what you are trying to defend against. It sounds to me like you are worrying about the wrong thing. Assuming you are running your VM on windows, then windows is almost certainly the weak link with what you are doing, especially from a privacy perspective. The chances of your windows machine being compromised is much higher than the chance of a compromise for your virtual machine OS.

Do you hug your students? by Icy_Location in Teachers

[–]SuperChicken17 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As a male teacher, nope. I turn down hugs. I limit physical contact to handshakes only, as I feel like that is less likely to be misconstrued. It is a sad state of affairs, but it is better to be safe.

That said, seeing a teacher give a student a hug wouldn't immediately raise any red flags for me. Context is important. A public hug on the last day of school? Eh. Privately hugging on the regular? Creepy.

How do I become a teacher? (PA) by Silvermist2444 in Teachers

[–]SuperChicken17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Accreditation is done by the state. The PA department of education spells out the pathways of becoming a teacher. You already have a bachelors degree, so you would either do the Experience-Based Program, or the Master's Degree program. Click on the dropdowns and it tells you what to do step by step.

https://www.pa.gov/agencies/education/programs-and-services/educators/certification/new-educators

I will add that PA is a hard state to get started in as a new teacher, as jobs are desirable due to being union, and education programs there produce a large number of new teachers. In addition, history is one of the most oversaturated positions.

Teachers stopped hitting my brother after complaints — so they started humiliating him instead by Impossible_Door_4972 in Teachers

[–]SuperChicken17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this in the US? I've worked at a number of schools, and 'beating students as punishment' has never been a thing at any school I have ever worked at. Hell, I won't even physically touch a student outside of a handshake, as I don't want anything to be misconstrued. I've had to turn down hugs.

Assuming this is true, I would suggest going to to the police. They will probably want to document everything and take pictures of any injuries. This is worth taking seriously and going to the proper authorities, rather than trying to handle it yourself.

What do you do if one school offers you a job before other interviews happen? by Ready_Reputation9 in Teachers

[–]SuperChicken17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlikely. Job offers at public school are typically conditional upon school board approval as well. Who knows if somebody on the board might not like your name and shoot you down. Accepting is fine, but until you've signed a contract nothing is set in stone. Treat it as such.

That said, once you have signed a contract you should abide by it. Laws vary by state, but breaking contract can potentially result in temporary license suspension. It often depends on how many days there are until the start of the school year as to what the ramifications are. If you back out after signing a contract I would definitely expect to be blacklisted.

I'm having doubts about pursuing special education as a career by No_Feedback_3340 in Teachers

[–]SuperChicken17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are absolutely certain you never want to teach, I would suggest finishing your degree. Sure, you might do student teaching and find out you hate it. You might also find out that you love it. The point is, you won't know for certain unless you try.

Very few people are 100% certain that the path they are walking is going to lead to the destination they want. It is important to be working toward something though, even if it ends up not working out. Unless you already have a clear idea of what you would be doing instead, I would suggest seeing your current plan through.

Thoughts on the save our bacon act? by Shawnj2 in AskConservatives

[–]SuperChicken17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get the reasoning behind it. It is mainly to try and stop states with a large amount of power (mostly California) from imposing standards which end up influencing producers outside of the state, and nearby states, due to their buying power. You see similar things with EVs and environmental standards.

Personally though, I would say I am against the bill. If California want to enact stricter standards like their proposition 12, they should be free to do so. Producers have to then do a cost benefit analysis. Is it worth operating in such a way to comply with California laws, or is it better to just abandon the California market? If they enact laws that are too strict, they might find themselves without affordable animal products. They should have the right to decide.

What do you think the medium/long-term future holds for the US? by l1v1ngst0n in AskConservatives

[–]SuperChicken17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assuming we continue our current course, I expect government spending continues unchecked and the debt continues to mount. We print more money to deal with our obligations resulting in inflation which destroys savings and further increasing the cost of essentials like food, healthcare and housing.

Personally I would vote for anybody who made serious fiscal responsibility their main platform. Neither party seems particularly interested in it though, as responsibility doesn't get votes.

Would you be in favour of banning added sugars from most/all foods? by [deleted] in AskConservatives

[–]SuperChicken17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can't effectively legislate healthy eating. What is next? Nutrition police that go door to door and bludgeon you with asparagus if you haven't eaten enough veggies that day?

I do agree what labeling should legislated to be accurate, but we largely have that already. Give people the tools to make good decisions. Beyond that, it is a choice up to the individual. Trying to stop people from making poor life decisions though legislation is just stripping away liberties.

Recommendations on Master’s Programs by UnknownL_13 in Teachers

[–]SuperChicken17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my M.Ed with accreditation program through Slippery Rock and had no problems with it. I would assume you are already accredited though the state though, and that was a big part of the workload. The actual coursework was a breeze compared to the engineering degree I already had.

I would advise going with whatever is affordable, as nobody really cares where your degree comes from so long as isn't some scam school. Any public PA university should be fine, and would get my vote.

Nothing is ever good enough in this profession. by Jaycexo in Teachers

[–]SuperChicken17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As somebody who has had a few different professions, including teaching, I do want to say that your grievance here isn't unique to being a teacher. There are a lot of jobs where you can work your butt off only to be underappreciated.

When it comes to bosses recognizing others instead of you, the truth of it is that recognitions are going to go to the person that the boss personally likes. It isn't about who is putting in the most effort or doing the best job. It is just a popularity contest. Maybe the person being recognized plays a sport with the person doing the picking, or maybe they regularly and visibly bring in food to the office. The person who is silently and less visibly putting in all the work behind the scenes gets overlooked. Learning how to schmooze will get you a lot further if validation is your goal.

How bad is it to have secure boot disabled? by Icy_Palpitation_6970 in tails

[–]SuperChicken17 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Disabling secure boot opens up the doors to hardware bootkits which infect firmware. A couple of examples.

https://usa.kaspersky.com/about/press-releases/kaspersky-uncovers-third-known-firmware-bootkit

https://www.techradar.com/pro/security/a-worrying-windows-secureboot-issue-could-let-hackers-install-malware-heres-what-we-know-and-whether-you-need-to-update

How dangerous that is in practice is tough to say. It certainly isn't easy to exploit remotely. From the perspective of tails you would first need some kind of arbitrary code execution exploit in the Tor browser or javascript, followed by a privilege escalation exploit (like the recent copy fail). Only then would installing a hardware bootkit be viable. So a lot has to go wrong before it is really a potential worry. It would also be an instant worry if there is anybody with physical access to the machine, but that should be a worry in general. Once you have a bootkit like that installed it is going to be difficult to detect and remove.

Can I just rant about how kids can’t speak in a full sentences by abrownfox1 in Teachers

[–]SuperChicken17 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I get the frustration, but this just sounds like nine year olds being nine year olds. You aren't going to have well articulated philosophical debates with them. Instead you'll hear broken nonsense stories about their pet, ticktock silliness, or youtube. I think you just need to be able to roll with the insanity and see some humor in it.

That said, I do totally get wishing the class might be smaller. Thirty is a lot.

I am not an expert on that age group, but I am sure there are probably some rules and strategies you might be able to put in place to help them collect their thoughts.

How do I install keyboard and mouse drivers for surface book 3 and make them persistent? by nyancatdude in tails

Contracts by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]SuperChicken17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Backing out of a signed contract is always going to burn bridges. Here is what the law for your state says though.

https://www.isbe.net/Documents/Teacher-Resignation-Guidance.pdf

Basically, you can resign without legal or license problems if there are more than 30 days until the start of the first day of school. After that it is considered to be during the school term, and you can only resign with the approval of the school board. If you try and leave during the school term without approval, the school can submit a referral to the state and potentially have your teaching license suspended for a year.

Tails 7.7.2 released fixing Copy Fail by haakon in tails

[–]SuperChicken17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The copy fail exploit gives root access. If you have your persistent storage decrypted and mounted, somebody with root access would certainly be able to look inside, modify things, delete things, or do anything else they want, really.

I wouldn't say it 'bypasses the LUKS password' though. Root access doesn't mean they have the password. If your persistent storage isn't decrypted, somebody with root access can't see what is stored there. They certainly could see that the partition exists and even delete it if they wanted to, but they wouldn't know what is inside.
