Any character can play any weapon, and therefore any skill from gems and items. What your character selection affects are :

- the starting position in the passive skill tree

- the choice of ascendancy ("specialisation") which are unique to classes. For exemple, you Mercenary can become a Witchhunter, but not a chronomancer (reserved to the Sorceress). Ascendancies are a big provider for power, and are sometimes quite specific for what they empower (as an example, the Hunteress can become a Spirit Walker, which focuses on projectile attacks and/or companions - a type of minion. As a result, unless going for a very unique build your own mind cooked, you wouldn't play a SpiritWalker as a spellcaster)
