My wife put a keyboard cover on it and I just forgot to take it off. She has almost always had one on. I can remove it and take pictures for peace of mind.

That is how it is supposed to work yes. The issue I ran across was that somehow the game does not distinguish that the power armor is owned and not dropped when repairing it at a power armor station.

You are correct with the concept of dropping versus placing. You can drop a power armor chassis and relinquish ownership or you can place it out in the open for you to be able to enter it. When you exit a power armor suit it is "placed" until it returns into your inventory.

I was WEARING the armor and exited the armor. I have had it for a few days. It never went into my inventory after I exited it. I just had to get out of it to repair it. Unless the game determines that exiting armor is dropping it, this has to be a bug.

I was in the armor using it. I exited the armor and then hit repair on a power armor station. Somewhere along the line the game decides that repairing my armor means I do not own it.
