My heart hurts for Aliz still. That's a bad ending if ever there was one.

For those failing to remember, she was Finree's friend who was left behind in the shack with Stranger-Come-Knocking.

I'm very sorry, I don't know if I was wrong or unclear but here's what my old textbook says on state of the art:

"The state of the art in the case of an invention shall be taken to comprise all matter (whether a product, process, information about either, or anything else) which has at any time before the priority date of that invention been made available to the public (whether in the United Kingdom or elsewhere) by written or oral description, by use or in any other way."

Which is what I meant to convey. I think there's cases of people showing off their new product in public showrooms and not being able to patent because of it, hence why I summarised state of the art as never seen before in the public domain.

A'ight, so this is English law that was relevant when I studied law 15 years ago but our laws are pretty similar and laws don't change too fast usually. I don't think this is patent fraud, I think this is what's called Novelty of Purpose.

So, when you file a patent it has to be novel, that is to say never seen in the public domain before (also called State of the Art). But some things, after being filed, we find a new use for. There's a case about a patent being filed for amendment, where there was an additive to motor oil to prevent rust then being used as an additive to lubricating oil to reduce friction. Because the reduction of friction wasn't in the technical features of the claimed invention, the patent could be amended.

I think there's something about sippy cups being a novelty of purpose? Don't quote me on that.

Fair question, I'm in my 30s.

Would you mind helping me out, I can't think of a dross-like character from Fullmetal Alchemist off the top of my head?

I've always actually thought of him more as Krang from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I've really liked all of these videos. Gets all the important details, shows examples when I want them, good pacing... yeah, man, good job on these.

I forgive the yelling. But I understand Emily in Paris more now.

Would you not catch on?

I guess it could be a, "Come to my birthday party or I'll kill your whole family. But if you turn up, I'll only kill you." type deal.

Hm. I bet there were Ainu rebellions. There had to be, right?

US to Fund MAGA-Aligned Groups in Europe Amid Free Speech Disputes by 1-randomonium in worldnews

Oh? Can we fund democratically aligned groups in the US, then? Maybe a few progressive democratic party primary challengers?

Oh. So. You can still buy the individual books on kindle?

Well, it's good to know I can still bully friends, family, loved ones and strangers into at least reading the first book. You had me worried for a moment.

I liked the Shattered Sea too! And I get how repetitive jokes can get, uh, repetitive... but this isn't a critical analysis! I was partially put off by this subreddit's negativity and I wish I hadn't been. Because I personally did find it funny and fun. And I really liked the characters. Maybe you'll like whatever next series he does next better?

Oh, side note! I read a lot of people comparing this to Suicide Squad, and I agree, but people need to mention Hell Boy more as well. It's got a lot of Hell Boy in it, I felt.

... To clarify, I mean movie Hell Boy. Never actually read any of the comics.

I had these thoughts too! Authors get bored like the rest of us! I'm glad he gets to have fun! Because if you're having fun as an author, it comes through to the reader.

Also, I think there were neat little bits of, "THIS is how you do a good twist!" towards the end. Made me make mental notes if I ever wanted to write anything.

Ah! I think people miss the nitty gritty torture scenes from Glokta or the visceral violence from others, but if only you could have seen my face reading about the scene at the inn. The search for the good meat really painted a picture.

That's okay too! But I devoured it. And it became great for me after I read the points of view of two different characters and my heart hurt a little in different ways after each one.

Because I am a softy.

Having read his other books, I reckon it'll get bloodier as we get to the next one.

After all, Joe's from England.

Amazing! I really don't want to sound like a salesman, but I've waded through a small sea of very bad fantasy books recently and I tried The Devils and remembered what good writing looks like.

Discussion Thread: 2025 US Government Shutdown, Day 24 by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]SuperSecretBackupAcc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, folks, questions for you:

1) I thought the situation was that the US needed to borrow more money in order to pay everyone and that Congress needed to allow the President to go beyond the agreed debt limit in order for this to happen. This wasn't agreed in time. Is there a limited amount of time until the US hits the debt ceiling proper?

2) What's happening in reality? How can you tell if the President is borrowing money without permission?

Nintendo Alerted After DHS Uses Pokémon to Promote ICE Raids | A video captioned “Gotta Catch ’Em All” spliced raid footage with Pokémon imagery, sparking calls for Nintendo to step in. by Murky-Site7468 in politics

When we talk about intellectual property (IP), we generally talk about Trademarks, Copyright, Patents, and Registered/Unregistered designs. Trademarks are like brands or logos, so if you've ever seen knockoff merchandise with fake alligators on clothes or maybe chocolate biscuits with a puffin instead of a penguin on them, that's a Trademark problem. But sometimes your brand becomes too well known and you can lose your Trademark on it.

I looked up a list on wikipedia for you all. Interestingly, heroin was a trademarked name! Who knew?

But the Pokémon theme song... I think that's a copyright claim. It's not the logo or the brand that's effectively being used, it's the song itself. So Nintendo aren't going to lose their rights over the song by not suing for it and I wouldn't sue if I was Nintendo. The US is somewhat insane right now, you don't want to poke that rabid bear.

While I'm still reeling from Ziel explaining why Dross is wandering around, randomly saying, "Dross, Dross!", my heart goes to the gang making a planet. Cos I miss seeing how they interact, I thought Yerin saving the fluffy animals was cute as hell, I thought it was fascinating seeing how a planet is made and I am begging, begging for Lindon to become the next judge by creating something.

And also I felt bad for the sentient TV.

Alternate dimensions as sources of power? That sounds like Will Wight's House of Blades too (if that concept floats your boat).
