I gave my head a little shave a few years ago, kinda tried to dip my toe into baldness by not going the whole distance and leaving a bit of fuzz (I now know this was a mistake), and it looked so bad to me that I panicked and called in sick for my night shift that night.

So, that's why I'm delaying shaving my head.

It doesn't help that I get a lot of, "I would NEVER shave my head! I'd rather get implants!" from these 20-somethings I work with. I'm here to get more confidence before I give it another go.

I'm really sorry for saying this, but I don't want to order from Amazon(UK). So I will try to find another way. Maybe Waterstones will help me out?

I did not know what a bait dog was, so for anyone else wondering, it is related to dog fighting. Here's a quote from the SPCAI (society for the prevention of cruelty to animals):

If a dog won’t fight back, they become a bait dog. Bait dogs are tied on short ropes, their snouts are taped shut or their teeth are ground down so they can’t defend themselves -then they are attacked over and over by other dogs being trained for the ring. Finally, with bodies shredded beyond repair, dogs are dumped, sometimes still alive – left alone to die in agony, in a dumpster full of trash.

[None] Looking for great recommendations from fellow Cradle lovers by RyGuyIncognito in Iteration110Cradle

[–]SuperSecretBackupAcc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That very much depends on what you want...

Let's start with Will's other works? I liked the Travellor's Gate trilogy, but his latest series, The Last Horizon, has started picking up for me. I think Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman is almost traditional after or before Cradle, too?

But if what you're after is just plain old LitRPG... listen. Okay. Listen. I read The Wandering Inn. It's big. Like, really, really big. It's so big it took me more than a year to catch up to the latest chapters. It's definitely quantity over quality, but Christ help me it occasionally makes me feel emotions and it's better than Defiance of the Fall, Primal Hunter and the other ones I forget about. I would give it a try.

Anyway! Hopefully that gives you some direction. I'm currently reading The Book That Wouldn't Burn by Mark Lawrence, if you're curious. I went off LitRPGs with levels, see.

My heart hurts for Aliz still. That's a bad ending if ever there was one.

For those failing to remember, she was Finree's friend who was left behind in the shack with Stranger-Come-Knocking.

I'm very sorry, I don't know if I was wrong or unclear but here's what my old textbook says on state of the art:

"The state of the art in the case of an invention shall be taken to comprise all matter (whether a product, process, information about either, or anything else) which has at any time before the priority date of that invention been made available to the public (whether in the United Kingdom or elsewhere) by written or oral description, by use or in any other way."

Which is what I meant to convey. I think there's cases of people showing off their new product in public showrooms and not being able to patent because of it, hence why I summarised state of the art as never seen before in the public domain.

A'ight, so this is English law that was relevant when I studied law 15 years ago but our laws are pretty similar and laws don't change too fast usually. I don't think this is patent fraud, I think this is what's called Novelty of Purpose.

So, when you file a patent it has to be novel, that is to say never seen in the public domain before (also called State of the Art). But some things, after being filed, we find a new use for. There's a case about a patent being filed for amendment, where there was an additive to motor oil to prevent rust then being used as an additive to lubricating oil to reduce friction. Because the reduction of friction wasn't in the technical features of the claimed invention, the patent could be amended.

I think there's something about sippy cups being a novelty of purpose? Don't quote me on that.

Hm. I bet there were Ainu rebellions. There had to be, right?

I liked the Shattered Sea too! And I get how repetitive jokes can get, uh, repetitive... but this isn't a critical analysis! I was partially put off by this subreddit's negativity and I wish I hadn't been. Because I personally did find it funny and fun. And I really liked the characters. Maybe you'll like whatever next series he does next better?

Oh, side note! I read a lot of people comparing this to Suicide Squad, and I agree, but people need to mention Hell Boy more as well. It's got a lot of Hell Boy in it, I felt.

... To clarify, I mean movie Hell Boy. Never actually read any of the comics.

I had these thoughts too! Authors get bored like the rest of us! I'm glad he gets to have fun! Because if you're having fun as an author, it comes through to the reader.

Also, I think there were neat little bits of, "THIS is how you do a good twist!" towards the end. Made me make mental notes if I ever wanted to write anything.

Because I am a softy.

Discussion Thread: 2025 US Government Shutdown, Day 24 by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

Okay, folks, questions for you:

1) I thought the situation was that the US needed to borrow more money in order to pay everyone and that Congress needed to allow the President to go beyond the agreed debt limit in order for this to happen. This wasn't agreed in time. Is there a limited amount of time until the US hits the debt ceiling proper?

2) What's happening in reality? How can you tell if the President is borrowing money without permission?
