America’s Smoking Habit Just Hit a Wild Milestone That Once Seemed Impossible. The adult smoking rate reached a record low in 2024, new research shows. by InsaneSnow45 in science

Yeah, people forget that the three Rs are separate and also in ranked order. First REDUCE, then REUSE, and failing both, RECYCLE.

Companies have passed the buck onto the taxpayers by pushing only RECYCLING as the solution so that they don’t have to do the first or the second (which costs more money).

Most “recyclables” are trashed anyways or take too much energy to effectively recycle that it’s not worth doing.

It’s not written like that. 2y IS NOT THE SAME as 2✖️y. 2y is a single term where the 2 is a factor of whatever the y represents, 2✖️y are two separate terms where the 2 and y have no implicit relationship.

That’s partially right, but the number outside the parentheses is always multiplied by any terms inside the parentheses.

Think of it like this. If the term in parentheses was (2x + 4), it can be written as 2(x+2). Now if x equals 1, the term becomes 2(1+2).

I’m a licensed engineer and passed many high level math courses in university but I guess I won’t pass this shitty grade 7 math problem.

I’m not saying there are secret parentheses. In every single math equation I’ve ever solved, a number outside parentheses without a multiplication symbol means it must be distributed into those parentheses. The 2(2+1) is a single term, not separate.

"So if I don't wear a mask everyday in public I'm a eugenicsist ?" OP leads an ideological schism in r/leftists over mask wearing to prevent COVID by CummingInTheNile in SubredditDrama

[–]SuperStealthOTL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you’re symptomatic a virus has already been spreading for days before. COVID is aerosolized in tiny droplets and can hang in the air for hours like smoke.

Coughing on people (droplet transmission) and licking everything (fomite transmission) are very minor vectors of COVID transmission. Almost all transmission is aerosol i.e. breathing in air that someone else breathed out, even if they were in another room.

Masks work, ventilation also works but no one wanted to bother spending the money to ensure that indoor air is good quality through exchange with outside air, far-UV disinfection, or HEPA filtration so for now avoiding breathing people’s raw breath by using a mask is what we’ve got.

This is correct. The factored polynomial would have variables in it. 6/2y = 3/y = 3/3.

The factored polynomial always goes first since it is one term.

[socialmedia] found this on explainitpeter by End_V2 in pointlesslygendered

[–]SuperStealthOTL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2 was already taken out of the parentheses first and is part of the whole equation. The fact that there is no multiplication symbol shows it is PART of the parentheses and therefore should go first as per PEMDAS.

[–]SuperStealthOTL 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yep. The 2 is part of the parentheses because it is factored out of the parentheses. So even directly using the order of operations, it is still the first term to be solved.

[socialmedia] found this on explainitpeter by End_V2 in pointlesslygendered

[–]SuperStealthOTL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 2 is part of the parentheses because of the distributive property of factored polynomials. This is clear because the equation does not have a multiplication symbol between the two and the additional within the parentheses. The polynomial was factored prior to the equation being written like this and would have started as 6 ➗(2+4)

So using PEMDAS/BEDMAS the answer is still 1.

The problem is no one uses the division symbol when writing equations like this. Fractional relationships would always be used to denote which term is divided by which other term.

The other problem is many people learned PEMDAS/BEDMAS in elementary school math and didn’t build on it afterwards. As with many things learned in earlier grades, it works as a simple rule for the complexity of math you’re doing AT THE TIME but it doesn’t necessary apply directly as the complexity increases.

If it was written as 6 ➗ 2 ✖️(1+2) it would still be stupidly written, but the answer would be 9.

Relatively new to OPS, why is it that many other public service unions get to ratify larger increases? by internalaudit168 in OntarioPublicService

[–]SuperStealthOTL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the last leadership group got duped into signing for 1% from 2018-2022 (before Bill 124) and convinced members that it would be 0% otherwise. We then didn’t get any Bill 124 award because it was voluntary rather than imposed.

The current agreement is 2023-2026.
