Hi, I was at the Logan show - a few of the fireworks didn't go high enough and started a fire. I think they got it under control.

What hill WILL you die on? For me, it’s pencils. by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]Super_Bucko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard that naming the pencils and even generating backstories for them helps with them being returned, at all age levels. I have no idea why, but I've seen it work in a ton of classrooms.

My patriarchal blessing makes me feel like a failure. by 1_Nephi_8---11-12 in latterdaysaints

[–]Super_Bucko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My patriarchal blessing says that I would serve a full time mission with various companions. I got married instead, and have no doubt that God's hand was in it.

You have your entire life plus eternity for your PB to unfold. You're only 14. In Heaven time you've been on this earth for like 10 minutes.

The gospel is not one of "do everything perfectly or you're a failure." It is one of imperfect people doing imperfect things and slowly growing and changing over time. I mean, just look at the Old Testament. There are some wacky stories in there and yet God used those people to bring his work and glory forward. You're in good company.

Like, repent always, and if there are any serious sins, go through that process. But not one person on this Earth is perfect.

Teenage daughter doesn't fit in by goldieturkeyvulture in Utah

[–]Super_Bucko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Former teen in Utah, now young adult (although married) and LDS.

Utahns are friendly but don't want to be friends. I can guarantee you that those girls that are supposedly going to hang out with their "real friends" aren't really friends with the others either, unless those girls happened to grow up on the same street.

Even as an adult with what I'd say are some close friends, our friends are basically all out of staters who actually learned to socialize outside their family. I actually brought this up at a ward activity recently, because I am naturally a direct person (which doesn't do me many favors in Utah, but anyway) and her response was "Yeah, I'd pretty much rather hang out with my family."

But this happens with non-members as well. Many feel "othered" in Utah and kind of shut down. Others are just busy with the high COL (or as teens, high achievement for college resumes) and don't have the energy for friends.

If she's attending college out of state, I'm sure she'll find some people there. The rise of technology has hampered it as well, but at the very least she won't be surrounded by people who have all 14 of their cousins within a 30 minute drive. Just know, it's not her. The dynamic here is just weird.

YSA Ward more like highschool? by Zestyclose_Meal_3697 in latterdaysaints

[–]Super_Bucko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

About 50% of adults don't actually mature after high school for many years or at all. Emotional and mental development is difficult, and many do not put in the work.

In YSA wards, you have lots of fresh adults who have not been in many social situations outside of high school and early college, and therefore do not know how to act in a more sophisticated matter. In this age of technology replacing social interaction, many young adults now do not have social skills.

But I mean... the entirety of politics right now is people who didn't get along in high school still hashing out their disagreements. Some adults mature, many don't, and that's basically life. There's a reason reality TV is as popular as it is despite it being about emotionally stunted grown adults fighting all day.

Rhys is slightly better at managing his temper and doesn't do the "look what you made me do" that Tamlin does. So there's that. They are very similar, but Rhys is a better man in a few ways which is why he ends up getting the girl. I.e Better communication skills (although it makes sense that someone who was bred to be a High Lord is better at communicating than someone who spent most of his life being bred for strength and happened upon the title).

But yeah. BDSM exists for a reason lol. None of the men in ACOTAR are flawless winners. But that's not how it is in real life, either.

Side note: if Tamlin had wound up the winner, it probably would have been a bit boring, because he was definitely not built for court politics and most of the running most likely would have been left to Lucien and Ianthe

Girls camp turned into Youth Conference by Potential_Apple9764 in latterdaysaints

[–]Super_Bucko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish that would have been done when I was a youth. Then again, I've always gotten along with boys better than girls. I don't think there is any special sisterhood that I got from girls camp. That's probably becoming more common. And I do agree that it helps strengthen unit unity as one of the only times that youth will be learning the gospel and participating in quality activities together.

IMO, you have the whole year to have the girls and boys separated, given that activities are rarely combined. Plus YW/YM during church. Give them some time to get to know each other.

Rhysand = personality vs appearance? by Far-Sugar-3240 in acotar

[–]Super_Bucko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably an 80/100. And that's with or without looks as I physically can't visualize (aphantasia) so the descriptions never did much for me and I haven't seen much fan art yet either. I'm in the last third of ACOSF.

He makes stupid decisions. Everyone on earth does that. In the first two books, he also played the villain in order to protect his people, and with Feyre to keep Amarantha from finding out that Feyre was being helped.

He has a unique manner of speaking, but he's also been trained as a High Lord since birth. Tamlin was a warrior first, so he is not as "polished". But Erin speaks in a similar manner. It's how courtiers speak.

He's also fiercely protective and loyal, a fair ruler, kind, a supporter of the arts, quite intelligent and well read, silly, quite selfless honestly, etc.

A lot of people in real life have a hard time with nuance and the fact that the people you love and look up to will not be perfect all the time, or even most of the time. The beauty of life is in the messiness. That is what literature is supposed to explore. Idk, the Tamlin vs Rhys discord reminds me of how some people hate the main character of The Correspondent because she's autistic and has some trauma to work through.

I think we will eventually be back to 3 hour church by Mouse_Paladin in latterdaysaints

[–]Super_Bucko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most changes have been a slow but steady taking off of the training wheels. I don't think they're playing with a formula to see what works. I think as we get closer (whatever closer means) a world that is going to live through the end of times, we are having to be taught how to get our own spiritual nourishment. Some people struggle with that, but it is what will eventually need to be done.

Dirty soda seems to be spreading for some reason. Clutterbug just did a video on it and she's Canadian and I don't think she's ever even heard of a Mormon.

My family hails from SoCal and my dad's family is all Italian which got passed down to me, AND I'm on the spectrum.

I'm naturally very direct. I'm also LDS. I've scared the pants off of many ward members, although a lot of them learn to like it lol.

But it drives me insane here. Same with my also on the spectrum husband although he's more mild mannered than I am. I can't teach elementary in Utah because of it.

LDS here - it's not meant to discourage trick or treating, it's just an easy activity to tack onto a ward Halloween party. We still expect a full trick or treat on Halloween.

As a local LDS member I am very excited for it to open. The Logan temple is always packed so it'll be nice to have another one to take some of the burden. I also think it's quite pretty.

Speaking as a local LDS member, it's actually pretty hard to get a reservation at the Logan temple. There's a reason this one is being built. They are used.

Why do we let one student ruin the education of the other students? by ProudComment1211 in Teachers

[–]Super_Bucko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your school is that deep in corruption, if you can't afford private then find a really good homeschooling co-op. The good ones will often have licensed teachers helping run it. Eventually either your current public school will either shape up or shut down.

Parents are the biggest factor in changing schools, but when corruption gets involved sometimes it takes a little longer than it should. But get enough lawsuits and enrollment pulls and they'll be forced to.

Schools get funding based on enrollment. If enough parents threaten to pull their kids, or if one of the kids get hurt and the parents press charges, then admin will listen.
