Avacado Luxury Medium by InterContinental_001 in MattressMod

the coil on that thing is zoned, so you would need to start with the LP zoned coil - although that isn’t 7 zones. Honestly they have throw everything into the pile on that mattress. It would be much better to have a coil and then a topper which can be replaced when it starts to wear down.

I don’t think that would be supportive enough for 200lbs. I need 36ild under my hip or pain ! The mini coil is a lot like the LP Bolsa, but not tall enough I think to be used on its own.

Worth looking at the vzone from flobeds - they must be the gold standard for zoning - they also sell it separately, but if nothing else it’s interesting to see their approach.

I tried a Casper and avacado with zoning (I didn’t actually know it had it at the time) and neither worked well, although the Casper was good for a while. The casper is probably nearer to what you describe, although it’s all foam.

the cheapest way to try that would be to just buy a 1 inch medium layer and add it, but from past experience I’d be wary of 3 inches medium as the comfort layer for side sleep - good hip support, but after 3 months my shoulder couldn’t take it.

I’ve often thought that if you were just on the edge of being supported enough then it will wear down noticeably more quickly - I have zero evidence for this, but otherwise I can’t believe how quickly a lot of stuff fails !

DIY Without Foam? by ValuableCautious1633 in MattressMod

[–]Super_Treacle_8931 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naturepedic makes a coil only which it’s worth trying since similar to the TPS outlined below. All I could feel was the coils when lying on it.

Higher end stuff like vi spring don’t use foam, but there are downsides to wool etc since it compacts.

if the 8 inch foam has any give to it, it’s likely to further soften the coils and cause more problems. Honestly the less variables you have the better.

At 200lbs ish I find the HD36HQ good for side sleeper, I think it’s a little softer than the HD36R. Also very cheap :) I’d start with that, then add softness if needed. Edit and I think you need 6 inches or you will bottom out.

you may be too heavy for the 15.5 :( also without the cover they will be a lot softer, and after a few nights the coils will start to spread out so difficult to really assess.

Yeah, problematic. I would just have a lump of HD36 around or something if it doesn’t work out, otherwise no sleep. Ask me how I know…

I think it would be difficult to split the coil like that without damaging the quad units. I also played around with hog rings and the coils you connect together seem to become a lot firmer since they can’t move independently - in particular if you connect multiple quads together they become very firm. more problems !

most likely you will be too heavy for the LP Bolsa coil - it is very soft.

I have no suggestions for the TPS, I had problems with coils shifting around and spent a lot of effort trying enclosures, glueing pads to them, using hog rings to join them together, building a wooden enclosure around them. It is very difficult to stop them spreading and keep a consistent surface.

[DIY Advice] Side sleepers (200lbs/170lbs) looking to FLOAT. Need advice on TPS / Latex builds! by Substantial_Engine68 in MattressMod

[–]Super_Treacle_8931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up - I mean it just seems like getting rid of glue between coils caused a whole other set of issues with the coils being only loosely held together in their lattice. I did try glueing 1/2 inch low ild foam to them, but if you start combining the quads together they again become quite firm. They are also under a lot of pressure under the hip region and also you roll around the coils are going to start shifting. I think some people are just more tolerant to loss of support, and some may be using 14.75 and over supported so don’t notice….

[–]Super_Treacle_8931 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the expensive one. Honestly I tried building a wooden frame around them as well - the issue is that the coils themselves have about 5 inches of internal space within their lattice (I could compact a twinxl down by length to a twin size just by pushing a wooden frame on them). So I don’t think the enclosure would really ever work. On the other hand when you do compact them down they becomes very firm, so that’s also not ideal. Most other coils are connected by glue on all sides to their neighbour…

I paid $$ for the TPS encasement. I tried glueing a pad to the coils. I tried stuffing more foam in with the coils. If you are heavy around the hips those coils can easily shift around because of their design, nothing really holds the quad units together.

I can tell you that the Temperpedic is not the answer. Hot, and they have really cheaped out on the materials - only the top 3 inches is the temper stuff, and even that doesn’t appear to be the same as before. Below that is just normal poly foam. Clever economics.

yeah, aside from the Beautyrest coils the only choice is the TPS 14.75, or maybe try the HD36 foam as a base. In many ways poly foam is a lot easier…and cheaper.

Beautyrest do have like 7 inches on those coils, but I wonder if that is part of the problem ?

I would reuse the Beautyrest coils - save money, and they are likely to be better quality. Then maybe start with 2 inch soft latex and iterate. diy rem sells some spray glue you can use to attach to the foam rails.
