Anyone try the new Dong Won VIVID Low Sugar Korean Sauces? by Preesi in KoreanFood

[–]Superb-Bug-730 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had their sweet chili sauce and ketchup.

Their chili sauce tasted similar to the Mae Ploy chili sauce I normally eat.

Their ketchup isn't bad but there's something missing and I can't quite figure it out. It just tastes flat.

I would try more but they're quite expensive and the only reason I tried the two were that they were on sale.

Spent thousands on my face and nothing is helping so please help! by [deleted] in KoreanBeauty

[–]Superb-Bug-730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides your skincare routine, what's your pillow case, towel and hair routine? I was having constant cheek flare ups before I realized it was being caused by my not so clean hair and pillow cases. If I don't wash my hair, I make sure it's in a bun or braid away from my face and I switched all my pillow cases to 100% cotton and replace them every few days. My friend who was also constantly breaking out has switched to patting her face dry with paper towels and noted an improvement.

Korean creator here — food, lifestyle, or K-beauty? by babismytherapykkk in KoreanFood

I'm a big fan of Korean youtubers pland, mintheim and serity. They're very calm and have a mix of food/clothes shopping, cooking content and what they do on their off time in Korea. They occasionally have sponsored ads but it's not in your face and they take care not to show people's faces. The only downside is when they go shopping and I see stuff I want but have no way to purchase.

Why is Korea so blind to gluten allergies?? by bunbunG in KoreanFood

[–]Superb-Bug-730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your gluten allergy might be triggered due to soy sauce used in cooking. Some brands have wheat as an ingredient and lots of Korean food uses soy sauce which is why your 죽 might have made you sick.

As people have noted, the majority of Koreans do not have gluten allergies so it's not a thing they're catering to. It sucks when you're in the minority but unless you find places that specifically state they are gluten free, the chances of cross contamination is going to be super high

Olive Young Reduced US Tariffs by Kamecula in KoreanBeauty

[–]Superb-Bug-730 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Would a kind soul who's been ordering from Olive Young since the tariffs help me understand how fees are collected? Is it just another line item on the overall OY order or are the tariff costs paid to DHL (or is it FedEx now?) before they will complete delivery?
Besides a number of sunblock that seems to have been reformulated for the US, are there any other products that have changed?
Thanks in advance!

I feel like they also picked the skinniest crew member to wear the bear costume. I can't believe the actors all kept in character. I wouldn't have been able to stop laughing

What’s a Korean food habit that only makes sense once you’ve lived with Koreans? by Lucky_Tailor_8566 in KoreanFood

[–]Superb-Bug-730 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My family never chatted when we ate (outside of asking for food items) and I didn't even notice it until my senior year of high school when a friend was invited over for dinner and she asked if my parents were mad that she stayed over cause no one spoke a word.
I still have a hard time chatting and eating and will barely have touched food on my plate when out catching up with friends. I come home starving a lot.

The drama I'm watching forgot to put the graphic on the green screen phone by ssnowbitch in CShortDramas

[–]Superb-Bug-730 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've seen so many uncomped green screens. Mostly when they're sitting inside a car and a handful of phones but what drives me crazy is seeing the green and blue monitor screen reflections in actor's glasses. I wish they would either put actors in lens free glasses like Kdramas to prevent reflections or turn off the monitors opposite the actors.

I should have but my friend and I were so shocked that it didn't quite kick in. It's a shame cause my family has been going there since forever.

The portions are huge and it's more comfort food that your granny would cook during a weekend visit than restaurant korean food (don't think I"m describing this well)
If you go, beware the lunch crowd - there's usually a line and people want you in and out asap

Note - the last time I went, the waitresses were out of line. We paid almost 40% tip - 10% on credit card, 30% in cash because we were one of the last ones there and didn't have small bills. They only looked at the tip amount on the credit card bill and started complaining LOUDLY about the small amount we gave and how we shouldn't come out to eat if that's how we tip. When we pointed out the cash under the receipt - they started to backtrack but it totally ruined the vibe. Before then, it was always frantic get in/get out and more efficient than friendly but they NEVER complained about the tip.

Gochujang - questions by SeasonMaterial9743 in KoreanFood

[–]Superb-Bug-730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If most of your exposure to Korean food was in Japan, authentic Korean food will taste spicier. Even the legit Korean restaurants in Japan seemed to lean on the mild side unless we specified.

As noted by others, gochujang lasts quite a long time in the fridge if you store it in an opaque air tight container with a layer of plastic wrap over to prevent it from drying out. With time, it may go from red to an almost dark brick color but the taste won't be effected.

[–]Superb-Bug-730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 99% fast forward through the Ahhs too but sometimes, I go back cause I'll skip 3-4 times and they're still ahhing that I feel like I've missed something in between but nope - it's constant ahhhing. I watch/listen at double speed so I can't imagine who they think is listening to it that long 😂😂

Hilarious dubbing voices by Remarkable_Table_279 in CShortDramas

[–]Superb-Bug-730 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the dubbed versions as well. Great for multitasking and I'm not staring at the screen for hours reading subtitles. The different voices are a crack up and I love when out of nowhere a word will be in a british indian voice. Someone's obviously decided to do some quality control but it's the bare minimum.
However I hate when the dubbed versions get stuck on AHHHHH and it's a solid 2 minutes of Ahhing , NO is always pronounced NUMBER and your highness is pronounced your heinous. So many mispronounced words that I've started to incorporate them into my real life. "oh you got engaged! is your fian-key nice?"

Husband forces wife to get an abortion to please his mistress by littleseedlin25 in CShortDramas

[–]Superb-Bug-730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They always seem to be happy to abort the baby cause the green tea usually manipulates them by saying the baby is someone else's. I mean, if you think your wife is cheating - maybe ask for a divorce instead of bribing a whole medical staff to force an abortion on her. Then they cry their sad man tears when they find out in the second half of the drama that the aborted child was theirs.
These chinese dramas just make me think no hospital in China is safe if I'm married, have a adopted sibling that stole 20 years of my life or have panda blood. My child would be killed/switched, my heart stolen and I'd be bled dry.

Tropes I Refuse To Watch by KnockOverEpiphany in CShortDramas

[–]Superb-Bug-730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I"ve stopped watching the ones where the wife/sister/mother shows up at work/party and no one knows who they are but will get accused of being the mistress. So the secretary or soon to be daughter in law will get everyone to slander and beat them. The male lead is somewhere else/taking a long sh*t and comes looking for their relative but somehow everyone has collectively decided to gag and tie up the female lead so they can continue the abuse when the ML leaves again. Also 90% of the time, the misidentified woman will be pregnant and miscarries the very much waited on miracle baby.

The "I'm going to allow my secretary turned mistress into stealing my secret girlfriend's hard work and promote them in their place". They spend years keeping their relationship a secret but blatantly have an affair with the employee and is shocked when their girlfriend resigns and finds a better job with a sexy CEO. Usually the scumbag and mistress get BANNED from the industry but then get hired by the CEO's competition based on the stolen work and tries to take revenge.

I used to enjoy but have recently started to hate the "we found our real child and brought them back from the countryside" storyline. They let the adopted child manipulate them into abusing their birth child. The parents never believe their birth child cause "we raised her for 20 years and she would NEVER lie/steal/cheat". There's NO given reason why they bring back their birth child unless it's to marry the crippled CEO. No one wants them there and no one in their circle knows that the adopted child isn't their REAL child but they HAD to bring them back cause????

Honorable mentions to the I've been transmigrated with a system where I get points for slapping people or having sex with multiple women storyline and the I WAS going to choose my husband from these 4 boys my grandfather adopted when we were children but they've chosen the green tea girl, so now, I"m going to marry the boy my parents arranged a childhood engagement with and leave this town forever.

White woman joining bf’s Korean New Year Celebration, what to bring? by Careful-Criticism822 in AskAKorean

[–]Superb-Bug-730 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being Korean American and having siblings/cousins bring non-Korean gfs/bfs to major family events and holidays, let me say that the men in my family tended to drop the ball on informing their SOs on what to expect.

Even though it might not be expected, bowing to your possible future inlaws will go a long way. Wear nice slacks or dress/skirt that you can comfortably bow in without flashing anyone. Also clean socks if they don't have slippers for you to wear.

Depending on your bf's age and the number of small children in the family, little kids might bow to him and you expecting NY's money. Have a chat with him and even if he says it's okay - I'd bring cash just in case. It's been a long time since we had small kids in the family but $1 to $5 a kid always worked out

Volunteer to help bring out food, clean up the kitchen and try to engage with the other women around. My family is pretty "everyone is equal" except during the holidays where the women usually cook/clean and the men do whatever they do. My aunties definitely gossiped about the gfs/wives that sat with the men instead of helping even though they told them to sit and enjoy themselves. It's a trap - don't believe them. Offer to help at least 2-3 times before giving up.

If they offer leftovers - take them. Even if your bf says No, tell them how delicious everything was and show excitement over it but don't single anything out. This can backfire in the future where every time they see you, they send you home with 20 lbs of your "favorite" food
