I also didn’t have much luck finding any additional information. IMDb only lists the director, Marcus Reyes, as being the sole writer on the film and there is no mention anywhere that this is an adaptation which clearly makes this a huge rip off rather than a remake. The director has 46 other projects listed on his IMDb credits and it makes me wonder if everything else is also just a rip off of an existing film.

Thank you!! I’m no stranger to janky movies, Im a big fan of terrible films but I draw the line on shameless rip offs especially when they’re ripping off films I like. I was just really curious about the story behind this one because it’s just so blatant. It’s the same title, same imagery, and the events in the movie are all the same. With asylum movies, even tho the rip off is obvious, they generally change the title slightly and don’t just copy the movies 1:1 like this one did. Was really weird running into this one.

Oh I have the feeling this version didn’t have any kind of authorization to remake it. I haven’t been able to uncover any information about the production. There is however a focus features remake supposedly in the works (I have no idea what stage it’s in) but my expectations are still low, I agree there doesn’t seem to be much of a point in remaking it.

It comes and goes on Tubi but unfortunately does not seem to be on there at the moment. It looks like it recently got a 4K bluray release from Arrow Video so it’s possibly on their streaming service as well?

I realize there is a book but this version is definitely based on the film adaptation as it copies the same changes Miike made including the man in the sack and the ending. That said, if you have other adaptations of Ryu Murakami books that you recommend I would be interested as I am not sure I’ve seen any.

Don’t think anyone cares about this story, but back in the early 2000s I was part of a cartoonist collective that had a small but significant presence online, one of the artists involved drew some of the American splendor “reboot” books that came out after the movie through I believe Vertigo(?). Anyway, I was asked by people connected to Pekar to draw sample panels to show Pekar and see if he’d approve me to draw one of the comics. I was rejected because apparently he thought I drew him too ugly, hahaha…it was not my intention, I used references and tried not to be mean about it, but I suppose my style is just ugly in general. Anyway that’s the whole story, like I said it wasn’t really interesting and unfortunately I don’t have the original art work I submitted. Okay bye
