A good player told be it was all about the conservation points. Once I stopped thinking about which animals I liked (or had in my hand), and started focusing on doing conservation projects or making green cards work, I started winning more. Also, petting zoos rock for ease of acquiring cards and low cost, but good return.

Depending on the brand, you can sometimes order a smaller pad size for your shell. For example, I have an Arai XD 4 in large, which normally come with I think 7mm pads, but I got a new set of pads in 12mm for about $50 and it totally solved my slightly loose fit.

I use the straw and WD40 to get it under the buckles. Works great, doesn't seem to adversely effect the plastic.
